Juat a quick addition.... if you use a "Y" (L,R, RCA to 3,5mm stereo adapter) it should go into the "Line in" jack on your sound card,  The "Mic in" is only a mono.

I use a laptop Doug so the mic input is stereo if it is a desktop then the only other input is the line in  on my Dell desktop there is no mic in only a line in

Juat goes to show, my sound card is dolby 7.1 with a whold slew of plug-ins stacked on the backplate.  Some in, some out, some amplified, some line level and such.

You are correct though that most laptops will have a common jack for mic & line in, which would be dual channel....... and some of the newer ones have only one that shares mic in with monitor out requiring a "special" headset or an adapter.  Have not got my head around that setup yet.... like what do you do if you want to record something and monitor it at the same time, or feed in a backing track and record along with it.  Guess we will have to get an audio interface and route everything through that via usb.  One more chunk of hardware I guess.

Take Care;
Doug

That is easy with my Tascam DP24 I have a stereo headphone jack I can monitor and rca outs all I do is run a Y chord to the mic input and open Audacity and hit record, all the tracks that are panned and mixed and the one I am recording live all feed in so no problemo smile

I dont know how your sending the signal into your PC if it is usb I do not know what advise to give you but if you have rca outs in your M track plus get a Y cord with rca to stereo mini jack they only cost around 4 or 5 dollars and run the rca's out of your M track into your mic input on the computer you should get a stereo signal in Audacity, also when you open the Audacity program there are settings in the middle below the recording and playblack level indicators one is a drop down screen on the right side where you can select monitor input if the signal is stereo both level indicators on top will move when you hit play on the M track this will tell you it will record stereo when you click the record on Audacity.

The best way is use your ears listen to the vocal and find a note that is common with it usual keys for most male artists are E A D G so one of those notes on your piano is at the beginning when the vocal starts, this is the root or key, In E the three main chords are E A B (or 1 4 5) in the key of A it is A D E  in D it is D G A and in G it is G C D this is built on the major scale which is a 8 tone arrangement of notes the easiest way to understand this is using the key of C major it has no sharps or flats. The notes in the C major scale are C D E F G A B C it follows the alphabet  as do all major scales which are built on intervals (distance between notes) these are also called steps, 1 4 5 in C is C F G this is the formula 1 1   1/2  1 1 1  1/2 or whole step whole step half step whole step whole step whole step half step there are many sources for piano that show the names of the notes for both black and white keys and C is in the middle. basic theory is VERY helpful to understanding the chords for any song. Another way to express the steps in a key is WW H WWW H or WENDY WITCH HAS WILD WONDERFUL WAVY HAIR the W stands for whole step and the H for half step. this is basic theory.

Russell,

I just want to be sure before I blow out my computer or something.....

I have a Fender Frontman 212 R  100 W amp .... it has a Preamp output jack. I have the cable that goes from the to 1/4"  to the mini  which is what I can plug into the mic jack on my computer. Is that ok ?

I am not sure how the Fender pre amp works but try it and see it sounds ok just watch the volume settings on the amp and the input signal on your pc and I would set the bass and drum control volumes on the Trio in the middle or mix them to your liking

Russell et al

I purchased the Trio and effects pedal - it is coming tomorrow ! smile

I do have a a question though before it gets here.....  as mainly a songwriter rather than performer - how do I  send the end product to my computer for recording ? Is there a special chord that has to go from amp to computer or do I have to just use the mic from computer to pic up the sound produced ?? Is that possible ?  Please let me know how you do it.  Thanks

Jim

Congrats Jim! Ok if your amp has a output jack you can buy a special 1/4" to mini stereo plug and plug it into your mic input on the pc then open your DAW program (Audacity or Reaper et al) and designate the mic input as the source, on Audacity you can monitor the input to see if it is picking up what your amp is sending. Another way is using a mic to record the amp or if you got a few bucks you can buy a Gibson memory cable that uses a 5 gigabyte card and stores all the songs you create then plug it into a card reader and upload it they make them with USB output as well as a card reader for a laptop.

It is possible you could go from the amp output on the Trio to your PC with a STEREO 1/4 to mini STEREO jack into the microphone input on your PC but I don't know if your DAW will amplify the signal but it should just click monitor input if the bars move then your good to go but I would use headphones plugged into your Trio otherwise the latency (delay of signal) could confuse you

The song is in A major there are only three chords it starts in A////|////|////|E////| and repeats till the chorus D////|A////|////|E//// this repeats each time "that's the wayyyyyyyyyy it is" is sung then back to the 1st part
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPY0Seo-dWA

Note: the rhythms are raga so the chords sometimes change before the melody as in most songs and the chords listed above are only a guideline not the arrangement I like this song feels very Bob Marley like. I played along to it and have decided to learn it thanks for pointing me to it smile

Lots of power in that amp, is there? I hope you can stay on good terms with your neighbors. I wanted to ask about your Les Paul ... is that the edition with the Classic '57 pickups in it? They're silky smooth sounding!

TF I am on good terms I only practice or record in the day when I practice new material or my current Travis picking style manual I use my acoustic or earphones. My new Les Paul Deluxe has redesigned the pickups, nut and neck I will look for a link that can give the lowdown on it for you. smile

Something tells me you'll make short work of that! wink
Enjoy!

I make a list of things each night to do the following day it helps to organize my time which is a precious commodity when you get to 73 and today is cloudy with rain expected times a wastin  lol
