Thanks for the previous post from SouthPaw regarding the "Scales Over Chords" book. I received it yesterday per your and Jerome's recommendations. It is very cool and will probably cost me a lot of sleep. Any one out there looking to improve your solo skills (or start them) would be wise to get this book. Best 15 bucks you'll ever spend.

Gwen Stefani is the sole reason No Doubt got the Attention they did.

Agreed. And she merits the attention!!!!!

I might get beat up for this but....How about Guns and Roses. Let me say...I really like/liked the band but without that lunatic Axle out front would they have been just another good unsigned rock and roll band? His voice was/is distinct and it was THAT voice that made the band unique.

Again, I enjoy their music and will wait for my impending "digital beating" because there are a ton of GnR fans out there in Chordie land

Thanks Roger. I was hoping you'd chime in being from that area. Thanks for the link. Anyone else? Is it a like a 12 string mandolin. I've read it's associated with Fado style of music (which is interesting as well). I'd really like a lower end unit to play with to see if I like it. I can only find 1 source here in the states and the models are 600.00 and up. Kind of a lot to drop on a whim without having any experience or even knowing whether I'll like playing it (or whether I can!!!).

Hi, have just joined up here. Am wondering if this thread is still 'a live one' - as it's originally dated last year. I am in Portugal right now, and saw this instrument recently at the local park - a couple were playing Fado music, one guitar, and one Portuguese guitar as described, also a singer. Twas very lovely indeed. If you're still wondering about this instrument I would be happy to find out for you from the local epople. But of course, you have probably found out by now, and even bought one.

I have not yet bought one but was still contemplating it. Thanks for checking in. I was interested in the difference in playing chords between the guitarro and a guitar. I really don't want to learn from scratch but if the two were similar I'd consider purchasing as I think it's a cool sounding instrument.

I'd think it would be very flattering to have another artist cover your song. Zurf mentions Willy Nelson...I think he wrote Crazy which was made so very special by Patsy Cline. While I like Willy's version, Patsy's is so special.

I agree with all the above. If your budget allows, get the A/E model. You never know when you may want to plug in. I've never noticed a difference because of a pick up. I'm pretty certian there isn't one.

Intro to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is easy to duplicate and sounds dead on.

Dead on Doc. They should be Gods. They are underappreciated

I second that...use a tuner. I've also had mine for over 20 years. Tuning by ear for me is very difficult. Like Southpaw says above, if you don't start with a "known good" all six (or twelve if you have the misfortune of tuning a 12 string!) will be off.

Having formal instruction is worth the investment if you're serious about playing guitar

Tough call. I really like SRV's version; it's magic. But the nod has to go to Jimi for doing it first. A copy of something is always just a copy no matter how good. Nothing could beat the original.

Sick Doc...very sick. I must admit it was like a train wreck I couldn't look away. I watched the whole damn thing.

No offense taken. I too love Rage Aganst the Machine and you're right I do not like Zack de la Rocha's lyrics much...but what a band.
I guess I should restate my gripe with Kanye and others. You are absolutely correct in saying he has a right to say what he wants and if I don't agree (also my right) I don't have to listen. I don't buy his albums and I don't watch his videos. If he's being interviewed I also opt not to watch that. So normally I wouldn't be exposed to him as his genre of music is not my preference. So normally it would be "all good". But of course since he's popular he'll occasionally show up at normal events that are not necessarily Rap related. In these forums he feels the need to shout out his opinions about things that are unrelated and that frankly he's not qualified to judge on. This is my problem with these folks. You have the right to speak your political mind (even if you have no idea what you're talking about) but fundraisers, telethons and award shows should not be the forum. I think it's pretentious to think that the general public cares or respects your point of view.
That is my long winded point. I hope this is less harsh and more clear

Ooh, Chris Martin - Coldplay...he's another one!

P.S I actually like Jay-Z and Kanye West.....think they're two of the more talented members of the RAP fraternity and bring a slightly different slant to rap music. Again, maybe just my opinion, but that's what's fun about music.....

Bud,
For me and Kanye it's not the music (although I'm not a fan), it's the "listen to my views on politics" crap. I'm not sure what makes Kanye think what he feels or thinks is somehow pertinent to anyone else. Keep rapping and spending your easily come by dough.

Don't know much about Chris Martin but I'm sure I could grow to dislike him! I'm getting old and cranky!!

Morrison,  Sting,  Bono, Perry, Henley and Frye are all fine examples of pretentious twits, but they do possess some genuine musical skill.
To realy excell in pretentiousness you must be a Rapper.  Puff Daddy, Jay Z, and Kanye West  put the rest to shame,  Not only do they exceed the others in ego, self promotion and shameless grandstanding, but they possess absolutly no talent that I can see.

Excellent point...especially that Kanye West. He needs a good solid beating. Why is it that these people think fame/celebrity gives the gift of intelligence? You were a poor idiot then now your a moron with money?

I've seen interviews with Henley and you're dead on....He does a lot of charity work for Walden Woods in Massachusetts. I've read a lot in print as well. He is, as you say, the head of the class. I can't believe I forgot to mention him. As far as Steve Perry goes do you have to have a career in order to be pretentious? Great career move going solo and all. They found a look and sound alike and continued on (albeit in mediocrity) and he just disappeared.

Oh boy Doc, negative Pink Floyd comments are going to get you into hot water...I'm going to skip right over that and address the rest (talking negatively about Pink Floyd or the Beatles is akin to heresy in my book!!!!)
These are all IMO:
Oasis - harmless a$%$%holes
Britney - White trash and harmless. more stupid than pretentious
Michael Jackson-way too messed up to be pretentious...there's something seriously wrong with him and being pretentious would be 20 steps up from
                        where he's at!!
Bono-I couldn't agree more. Shut up and enjoy the ride. I'm sorry you're not that good. I'd love to save the whales (or whatever his cause du jour is)
but I'm just trying to feed my family. Give all your personal money to the causes you care deeply for then I'll be impressed until then, drop
        the Ghandi routine
Dylan-maybe but what a writer.
Amy Winehouse-too much of a train wreck to be pretentious...probably doesn't know what it means anyhow.

Can we add Sting to that list?????

In that case...yes Morrison is overrated. He was a mediocre poet and a mediocre singer IMO. What I'm saying is there are certainly much better singers then and now and obviously much better poets then and now. Considering the attention and recognition he gets (then and still now); OVERRATED.

I agree Doc. Way overrated. "I am the Lizard King I can do anything"; this is a great poet/lyricist of his generation? My 6 year old rhymes with more complexity? A pretty good backing band; tight enough. But even they weren't ground breakers. IMO they got way more than they deserved. And the whole dying young thing is just pathetic. Can't handle reality so turn to booze and heroin, how is that tragic? How is that laudable? Pathos..pure and simple
