Don't know about Ken but things are still a bit hazy. Sober? Not very.

Ken, I  think you create the wrong impression of the man with your comments on Auld Land Syne. Sure this is a very old song which has also been tinkered with by Ramsay and Skinner before Burns had a look, bit I think it's generally considered that Burns took it to a whole new level. No, he never wrote all of it, but he did write most of it. I also agree that this is a song for any time not just New Year.

The more you look into the songs of Burns the more impressed you'll be. Dougie MacLean does a fair old whack of great versions.

I've wondered about this too but I just ended up thinking that the shape we know and love is just because it is more comfortable to hold and rest on the knee. Also just because we all know and love the shape. It's like if they bring out a very different looking car, with odd shape or odd light positions. No-one likes it cos it doesn't look like a car.

And maybe the whole resembling the female curves thing has more to do with it than we like to admit.

Now, come on, some smarty pants, and tell me it's all to do with tone and sound quality.

I hear the church are introducing new low fat communion wafers.

They're called........

Can't believe it's not Jesus.

Ok maybe this'll only work in the UK.

Tune the E string down until it sounds  the same as the D string but 1 octave lower.

I try not to but I always end up swearing like a b*st**d!

It does depend on where I am though. Every Monday morning I say to myself that I'm not going to swear today. After being in my work for five minutes or so something always slips out.

Never in front of my mother or my daughter.

Come along with me to Love Street, Paisley (home of the famous Paisley Saint Mirren) of a Saturday afternoon and I'll give you lessons on swearing.

Also can't get enough of "About you now" by the Sugababes. Good strumming rythm.

A lot of rockers use it because of the ease of power chords and it's great for playing those heavy riffs rockers love.

I use a capo quite often and was thinking of buying one of those G7th Performance ones as shown here:

Has anyone any opinions on these?

I know a lot of folk play it with their 3rd finger barring the 2nd, 3rd,and 4th strings.

Sounding the first string is not important, muting it with the underneath of your 3rd finger is fine. According to the experts.

Playing guitar should be fun. No matter what level you are at. There is nothing better (for me) than learning a favourite song and then hearing it coming from my fingers. I'll admit to still being uncomfortable with a couple of chords and if I can make it easier to have fun by simlpy using a capo then I'll not hesitate. Same for changing key. Some may think it's cheating but while I'm still working on perfecting some chords then in order to have fun, rock out or sing-a-long then I'll capo when I feel like it.

Of course all this doesn't mean I'll not keep practicing the uncomfortable chords. Of course I will. But in the mean time it's nice to end a hard session with a bit of fun. Or it's fantastic to have a sing song with your friends and family. Capo please!

Cheers

250 what? $, £, Euro?

I love my Yamaha APX500 electro acoustic. Cost me £200 (about $400).

Sounds great. Plays nice.

In Frankster's defense there is only 1 finger of a difference and all that involves is lifting your middle finger. Same form. Know what you mean.

Oh, and well done Zurf. I still hate the 6th Root minor barre chords. But like you they are coming along nicely.

Take a wee trip to your nearest music store and spend an afternoon playing different guitars. Take as long as you like, even to the point of annoying the store staff (that's what they're there for). As Southpaw says you don't need to buy an expensive one.

There are many acoustic players who play with their nails. Always sounds so cool to me. Mainly cos I can't do it and also bite my nails.

I'd say the main difference apart from the neck width is the sound of the strings. Also the feel of the strings is hugely different. Steel strings are much thinner and I much prefer the steel sound over the nylon classical strings.

I also have to agree with Zurf that the narrower neck makes it a lot easier for me.

I'm just impressed you play classical. Total respect!

I have a confession to make.

About 80% of the time i use x33211. But then, I'm just a clown messing about for fun and quite rarely to an audience. Still learning, still loving it.

I'm like you Doc. Totally jealous of people who can finger pick. I usaully end up banging away with my pick after giving up in despair. I like a bit of bend (but not too much) in my picks. I use Wedgies which are nicely shaped with a cool wee indent for you thumb. Very comfortable and easy to hold.

I have, however, in the past few weeks resolved to practice finger picking more and have seen a huge improvement, although still not competent. I'll keep trying though, cos it is so so cool.
