This coming Sunday (Nov 22) Makes 3 years I've been attempting to play the guitar. It's also my wife and I's 12 year wedding anniversary.  Man time really flies by... I used to have trouble remembering our anniversary till she bought me a guitar on one  smile Now I have an "important" reason to remember the date lol
Anyone else keep track of the day you started playing and set goal songs for each year. Mine for this year was "Girl from Ipanema" Here's fretkillers version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW2sTktB2Dg  I worked on it pretty hard earlier this year but slacked off it the past few months.. Been spending most of my time the last 2 weeks trying to get it down and meet my deadline.... Looks like I may miss my goal this time though. I can play it through but I still can't get it timed just right or quite up to full speed. So I've issued myself an extension smile to finish learning it before the new year. Now I have to find one for the 4 year mark.. Any suggestions?

My one year goal song was "Burn one down" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyk2-ezz … re=related and at 2 years it was to be able to play "bang bang" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ystQxu34CQg That one turned out to be just one riff all the way through so I got off pretty easy...

Really??? I found it yesterday and almost have it down this morning...

NOT lol

I'd consider it quite difficult also. I just meant that it wasn't the most difficult or advanced playing I've seen on youtube. It would take me a long time to get down as well... Maybe a nice goal song for the next year or two wink All the best! -Pix

Gibson Guitar Corp. Press Statement:

Today Gibson Guitar is fully cooperating with agents of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service as it pertains to an issue with harvested wood. As an FSC chain of custody certified buyer Gibson purchases wood from FSC certified and non certified suppliers ensuring that all certified products meet FSC requirements. Gibson Guitar Chairman and CEO sits on the board of the Rainforest Alliance and takes the issue of certification very seriously. Gibson Guitar makes every effort to ensure that all its wood purchases are legal and environmentally responsible. The company will continue to cooperate fully and assist our federal government with all inquiries and information.

I'd agree to a point....There are worse things happening in the world but I think the environment is important too! With out it there is no world! We're talking about the rain forest which could hold undiscovered cures for disease, endangered species, and some forms of plants and animals that haven't even been discovered yet. If a government is going to make a law protecting it then it should be inforced...IMO. The Idea is that if no one will use it, they can't sale it and won't harvest it... Do we need fewer laws in general and to enforce those more regularly??? Probably, but those are other issues....
I don't know if Gibson knowingly bought the illegal wood or not, but I would think a major company ,that is concerned about the environment, would check before buying a bulk of illegal of endangered wood... They got it through a German supplier and the president of Madagascar signed a bill for it to be allowed out of the country but that doesn't make it legal to import into the US or right to harvest it at all. It was strictly a financial decision for them (Mada) and not an environmental one...BTW, it was the department of Fish & Wildlife ,not the FBI, that raided them and seized the material.
As I think about it though, Martin, Taylor, Godin, Larrivee, and other major manufactures offer smart wood guitars made with renewable timber and ,as far as I'm aware, Gibson has yet to offer any comparable models... If anyone can correct me on this, please do so. I read articles all the time about companies trying to protect the environment but I don't think I've ever seen Gibson's name mentioned among them... Although the CEO does sit on the rainforest board.

This is still breaking... I can't wait to hear exactly what they had and how much! I'm assuming it's madagascar rosewood... This really surprised me coming from Gibson... Wonder if it will have any affect on their sales?

try holding your thumb on the back of the neck down much further.  This should bring your fretting fingers straight up on the strings rather than slanted.  it helped me.

+1 try to keep the thumb about center on the back of the neck...

Also I noticed in class last week that many beginners tend to slant the guitar back so they can see the fretboard... This causes you to have to reach around much further than holding it parallel to your body. So hold it straight and make sure your thumb stays low and you should see some improvement.

If the problem is only on the D chord you may want to try this fingering (I use it a lot)  Barre the GB&e strings with your ring finger on 2nd and then catch the B string 3rd fret with your middle finger. Turns it into more of a pinch chord...

If I was shopping for a good acoustic electric for under 3 bills, I'd be all over this http://cgi.ebay.com/NORMAN-ACOUSTIC-ELE … 27acd6bfc2  Same company ,and basically the same guitars, as Seagull, Simon & Patrick, Art & lutherie, etc... Solid top, North American made, Fishman electronics...  I've played several of their comparable models and all have sounded and played wonderfully.

Okay szmeretzky,
You have to sign up to view the tabs on Countrytab, so I didn't grab that one but I found it here http://www.allcountrytabs.com/tabs/bamf … 15847.html  I've added it to the database. Give it some time (I don't know how long) and it should show up in our index... -Pix

Maybe this will help for now...

                                           E A D G B e
                                            - - - - - - -
                                  G       3 2 0 0 3 3  Play most of the time
                                 G*      3 0 0 0 3 3  Altered chord, on down stroke beats 2 & 4
                              Dsus/F# 2 0 0 0 3 3  On beat 4 during transition G-->Em7 or Em7-->G
                                Em7     0 2 2 0 3 3  Play most of the time
                                 Em*    0 0 0 0 3 3  Altered chord, on down stroke beats 2 & 4

     Strumming pattern:

                     1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
                     D .  D . D U .  U .  U D .  D U D .
                                 *                      *

The * marks the altered chords listed above...

Try to strum that pattern (ddduuuddud ) over and over very slowly at first... Keep your arm going in a steady up and down motion to keep you on time and just try to hit the proper up or down strum. Remember start as slow as you need to in order to get it right and then gradually step up the tempo. Once you have the strum pattern down to were it feels natural and you're not having to think about it, you can add in the slight chord variations... They are only picking up one or 2 fingers (1 during the G and 2 on the Em7) on beats 2 & 4 ( 3rd and 5th down stroke) and leaving the b & e strings fretted. Once you have that down and can change between the chords easily you can add the little transitional walk-in (the Dsus/F#) between the G and Em7...  Hope that helps you get it.

You really start hearing the song come out once you add in the chord variations... and remember it helps sometimes to play along with the song... -Pix

Welcome to the forums!!

Here's a good version of him playing it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCalN6fjP5c

I'm on the road at the moment but when I get home this evening I'll see if I can work the strumming out for ya and maybe even throw a quick vid together to help you out with it. I like Damien's music and am surprised I'd never heard this one before, Thanks smile -Pix

Another thought smile (it's fun spending someone else's money wink ) Have you considered a Martin 15 series? You could find a real nice used all solid mahogany 00-15s  12 fret to the body, slot head in that price range and with mahogany recently being listed as an endangered wood it is getting scarce, so the guitar would be a good investment as well as adding something different to your arsenal.. Just make sure you find one that is solid mahogany as they have started using Sapele in the last few years for some of the tops...

This is what first came to mind http://www.simonandpatrick.com/showcasefolkrosewood.htm It's the same company as your Seagull (Godin) but I favor the S & P's 1.72 nut width over the 1.8 of the Seagulls. I like the headstocks better too, though I'm not against the seagulls and understand its reason functionally... And of course you can get it equiped with or without the AER electronics. I will say that they are exceptional though. The thumb controls are tucked neatly in the soundhole and the combination of USP and internal mic really sounds good and natural when plugged in. No barn doors... Except for the endpin jack you wouldn't really know it had electronics...
I'd consider used as well. You can get more for your money if you shop carefully. Maybe something like a Taylor 314 or another of the 14 series, Larrivee, etc...

Flame maple is used as a solid wood but you'll usually only find it on the very top of the line production guitars and into the small shop/custom built area. The S&P showcase models offer solid flamed maple back and sides as does the Seagull Artist Cameo model...

I'll be doing the usual... I always dress up as an old hobo and the wife dresses in her hippie clothes (not that unusual for her). We fill the guitar case with candy and sit on the front patio playing and handing it out... A few friends are supposed to join in this year for a little cook out and front porch playing but we may get rained out.... Have to wait and see if it clears out in time smile

How many members believe that a guitar "opens up" or improves with age??

Personally I believe they usually do.... Over time the sap dries out and crystalizes allowing for freeier vibration, etc. but why's it always supposed to be a positive change?  I was just sitting here (shaping a saddle for an acoustic bass) wondering why you always here of guitars improving but no one ever says, "Well it used to sound good until it opened up and the tone died...." Over time the woods change, the glues continue to dry, everything settles in, but why does that always seem to be for the best??   I guess it doesn't really matter but the thought was bothering me so why not post it smile
