Hi Clansman, you're right about that. I think the guy in the clip I linked to is playing in some open chord tuning but I found this and it sounds OK  http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/r/r … la_crd.htm

I added it to the Chordie archive but it hasn't found it's way on to the index yet.

That's one helluva UPS driver! Marry her!

I love this kind of thread. What it does for me is really show me that my knowlege of guitars is just about nil. Yeah, I've heard of these makes and models, but that's about it. It really makes me see that there is a whole universe of guitars out there that I haven't discovered yet. And would they make a difference to my playing? I fear I'm destined to sound bad on any guitar.

I can only dream of touching the guitars you mentiond, Lieven, but my Holy Grail is definitely Gibson. But only because the man who inspired me to play uses a J200. Other than that my knowlege isn't great enough to compile a top 5. I've got a lot of catching up to do.

I'm sure I've given you this link before but I'll give it to you again. It is a collection of guitars with a little story about each. This is not the man who inspired me, but he plays in the same band.

My Mum bought me my 1st guitar from a church fund-raising sale. She paid £7 for an old beat up nylon-stringed classical. It was held together with black tape and I loved it. It did me for a year or so. I learned a lot on that old thing.

That "entertainment" wouldn't happen to be the cheerleaders would it? Worth a day out just for that.

Thanks guys. I takes a long time for me to write. Don't know why but my creative juices only flow once in a while.

Glad you liked the site Paddy. I've even managed to sneak a wee link to chordie in there on the fly. Somewhere.

I've recently become obsessed with Rihanna's Umbrella. Once youve played this song once you can't stop.

Mine doesn't sound anything like this http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=5paQ9BwFAgI&NR=1

The B chord is what's known as a barre or bar chord. It gets this name, I guess, because you use your index finger to hold down all or 5 of the strings across the fret - like a bar across the strings.

http://www.brendanpauljacobs.com/barre_files/abarre.JPG

If you find this too hard (like most of us do to start with) don't forget that if you transpose ( or change key) you can find easier chords to play.

e.g. if you have a song wich uses 2 chords - B and E, you can transpose down a whole step (2 frets) and the chords would then be A and D. Same song but just a different key. If you have to play in the same key then since you have transposed down 2 frets then if you put a capo on the 2nd fret then you are back to  the original key.

I hope this makes sense. If not then don't be afraid to say so; someone will be able to explain it better than me.

Can't think of any 2 chord songs off hand but I'll give it some thought. Welcome to Chordie, you'll love it here.

Jeez!

Just learned about this. Makes the storms we've been getting in Scotland look like nothing. Positive thoughts and prayers to everyone caught up in it.

The first time I heard Greenday (maybe about 1990/91) the first thing that struck me was.......

The Clash.

Loved them ever since.

It is awesome to meet so many people that make time to play. Doesn't mean we have less going on, or that we are unemployed, it just means that we have set a priority of Guitar over TV!

As must be the case everywhere, the guys in my work quite often talk of the TV shows they've seen and can never believe when I say I never saw it. My brother-in-law gave us a DVD to watch some months ago and I have just returned it to him unwatched. He was horrified that we could've had this movie for so long and not watched it.

Quite frankly, I'd rather play guitar. My wife is also very tolerant. Hey, I could be in the pub, but I'm at home strummin and singing away to myself.

I'm another who came back to the guitar after a LONG break. Now I can't get enough. I'm even starting to enjoy playing in front of friends and family. Whisky is a wonderful thing.

All the very best; welcome to Chordie.

OK. I'm going to do it again. Sorry to keep going on about it but...

I have a Yamaha APX500 electro-acoustic. See it here http://www.guitar.co.uk/yamaha/1357-yam … tic_guitar

Not the most expensive in Yamaha's range but, Oh Nelly!  I love it. After trying this out it was an easy decision to buy. The built in tuner is a nice feature. You'll not hear me say a bad word about Yamaha guitars. Not in the £200 + range anyway.

If you can, go to a good store and try some. I say good store cos i went to some larger stores and was horrified at the condition they put guitars on show in.

Go on. Have some fun. And welcome to the forum!

I use a capo probably more than I should, mostly because I much prefer the sound of an open chord to a barre chord.

Seems this Burns guy is quite famous. As you travel around Scotland there are wee plaques on walls declaring "Robert Burns stayed here".

Between him and Mary, Queen of Scots they both keep the Scottish Plaque Industry thriving. lol

Glad you guys like the site as much as I do. A great help.

Cheers.

I do like that Paisley boy.

Have a look here http://www.milwburnsclub.org/songs.htm
