I love Led Zeppelin and I continue to be a fan of Robert Plant's efforts. Check out this video and imagine the pressure the guitarist must have experienced in reproducing the solo. I'm also a fan of the Wilson sisters and I think they nailed this one.

I almost choked up watching Robert Plant's reaction to the performance.

Big acoustic guitars named after large battleships? Not hardly!

Zurf,
How much should I expect to pay for a custom strap?

But I kinda like Zurf's suggestion..... road trip to a leather shop!!!  Nothin' like the smell of fresh saddle leather to bring back memories of younger days....

The shop proprietor has an old LP Hi-Fi on which he spins Led Zeppelin and Strawberry Alarm Clock and other such disks.  Saddle leather is not the only memorable smell there.

Nothing wrong with incense and peppermint!

Drive up to the leather workers shop in Gettysburg and get a custom one.  He'll even letter "Get back to playing" on it for you.

If you don't know the way, I've been meaning to get by there myself...

Excellent idea Zurf!

I'm in Atlanta this week visiting the family but a road trip is possible.

Beamer,
The racing strip strap would look good in my Mach V!

One of my unasked questions was leather versus something else. I see a lot of leather straps but I was thinking of something like this:

Also, I have a handmade cloth "belt" I bought while traveling over seas. I bought it for my daughter but it has come back to me. I would never wear it as intended but it could be used to make a unique guitar strap. I am considering this. My sister is quite the seamstress and could make it for me.

I've never used a guitar strap but the bluegrass jams I'm participating in seem to be standing activity. Recommendations?
Thanks,
David

I was in Charlottsville, VA last week. In the downtown area there seemed to be one busker per block. I loved it. Don't like the music, walk a block. It was like turning the dial on the radio.

Amy,
What a great story! Thanks for sharing.

And Zurf, nothing wrong with a Seagull but you know what they say, it's not a Martin.

That's a lot of miles you've traveled Jeff, you deserve to sip a few adult beverages.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY wink

Interesting perspective.

Happy birthday Topdown.

The weather in northern VA is perfect today. Sunny, cool, and calling all humans to get outside. I hear the call and I plan on a long run.

Yesterday I attempted to visit the 5,000+ instruments on display in the American History Museum. I was particularly interested in the guitars. After unwittingly stumbling into the Natural Museum of National History by accident -the wrong museum - I found my way to the correct museum, the American History Museum next door. (Am I the only one who finds these museum names confusing?) I visited the information desk to ask directions only to be told the West wing of the museum, the entire West wing, all three floors, are closed until 2015, 2016, or 2017 depending on which floor you want to visit.

I was dejected but a smile appeared on my face when I remembered this line from National Lampoon's movie "Vacation": “Sorry folks, parks closed....the moose out front should have told ya.” (John Candy as the security guard)

Unlike Clark W. Griswold I did not go crazy, but I did leave the museum.

Enjoy your day!

This is very interesting but bound to be controversial and awaken animosities and brand loyalty. “Experts” did not overwhelmingly choose a Stradivarius instrument over others. So the question remains: sound or brand?

My favorite guitar is a 1979 Yamaha dreadnought emulating a Martin D-35. Which sounds better? Don't know. Don't care. One I own and play, the other remains elusive to my budget.

I'm not saying a Stradivarius instrument, or popularly-branded guitar, is not all that and a bag of chips, just that we have a human obligation to play what we can, create what we can, to include music, whatever our budget.

Wow! Amy now I understand all the compliments about your singing here on Chordie. I think your rendition of Danny Boy is one of the best I've heard. Thanks for sharing with your non FB friends.

If I can navigate the cherry blossom watchers today, I will attend another jam. I really want to go but I don't like crowds nor traffic.

It is too nice to stay inside.

I went to see my favorite band tonight: Hurray for the Riff Raff. Fantastic! I haven't been to a concert in a long time. I don't like crowds and I don't like paying a fortune for crappy but very LOUD sound.

Tonight cost me $20 with the maligned Ticketmaster TAX. The concert venue was an old Synagogue now sporting the venue moniker: 6th & I, which just also happens to be the intersection outside its front door. This is in DC.

General admission. I figured there would be an unruly mob there and I would be the oldest and with the most gray hair. None of this was true. I walked in, noticed that while the pews were filling up, the two rows of folding chairs in the front were mostly empty. My M.O. Is always act like you know what you are doing and you belong exactly where you are. So I walked up to the front row and sat down facing the microphone closest to the edge of the stage, er, whatever it's called.

The opening band was okay, never heard of them. They were earnest, but loud, and I couldn't understand any of the lyrics. They were a three-piece, bass, guitarist-singer, and drummer. The drummer was excellent. They played for 45 minutes.

Hurray for the Riff Raff started at 9pm. I was sitting less than ten feet from the band's leader, Alynda Lee Segarra. She is a fantastic singer-songwriter and, judging by tonight's performance, a humble and good person. Her performance was inspiring; she oozes music and a joy for the craft. Her thank yous were heartfelt and she just seemed to be goodness.

HFTRR is a band that sound pretty much the same live or recorded. I like this fact. They are real.

This was a perfect night and one I will not forget. I am so glad I ventured out solo and used my discretionary time wisely.

Thanks Pete. It was a leap of courage for me but I figured I'm a stranger her so what's the worst thing that can happen? It's like anything else, most people will not criticize you but will instead give you credit for trying.

I enjoyed myself, met some new people, and learned a little.

Man oh man! I went to a jam today. First, a BEAUTIFUL day to be outside. Second, this was wonderful group and I may need plastic surgery to remove the grin from my face. More fun than the law should allow.

The jam was in DC, in a park. Perfect. On my way back home I had the very pleasing revelation, that after years of thinking, dreaming about it, I was, for the first time, a music producer instead of a consumer. This was a public park and, at one point, we attracted quite a few spectators, all smiling, some clapping, and one dancing. Finally I was on the inside looking out. I can't describe how good that makes me feel.

I still have a long way to go but what a trip to look forward to.

Zurf,
You are generous. I will be traveling back and forth to Atlanta fairly often between now and the end of May. My youngest is wrapping up high school and I am going to try to be there for all the milestones, e.g. Prom, graduation, etc. when things settle back to steady state, I'll take you up on your offer.
Thanks,
David
