excellent, very emotive. great voice/guitar and recording. i'm jealous....

Thanks for listening Phil... this song was a flop as far as being accessible to the listeners.... can't win 'em all, I'll just keep puttin them out there.

called "Back To You Somehow".... when you still remember the Love that once was and want it back but
you have drifted apart.... some folks cut the cord and end in divorce... some want to hang in there....

Inspired by the Neil Young cover of this great song.
My friend Jane sings a great harmony.
The harmonica parts are completely improvised in the moment.

Lyrics by Jim Clarke with Music and performance by me:

http://gilsmusic.bandcamp.com/track/all-that-is

Virginia D heard my songs and liked them so she asked if I would like to be featured on her grass roots effort to get unknown independents heard by new ears.
Why not? when you aint got nothing you got nothing to lose as Dylan once sang.
Hardest part for me was selecting only 9 songs for the show.  Have a listen and support Virginia's effort. My music is streaming until March 29th and then another artist is featured. A new artist every week:

.

Recently we've done 4 songs together.
Jim sends me the lyrics and I write the music and then get the songs recorded.
Here they are:

Thanks for listening to our efforts!

When I first heard this beautiful Leonard Cohen song I was floored.
Finally got around to learning it:

.

I recently heard Sixto Rodriguez's solo acoustic rearrangement of this song written by Al Hoffman and recorded as an uptempo big band song by Frank Sinatra.  Sixto's version rearranges the lyrics and slows the tempo and puts a whole new spin on it.
I decided to give it a shot:

.

Song came fast so I recorded it just as fast in one rough raw take
(got double vocals on chorus by overlaying first chorus over second chorus and mixing together).
Played from the gut just like a Hippie would.
"Everything is different...not like it used to be...my generation's sound...
transferred to MP3s...never hear anyone say 'far out' or 'groovy' on the street...
never hear about a great big Love-In...now it's Facebook and a screen"
A new song that celebrates the Hippie generation.
My mother was a Hippie so I was raised in the counterculture in the 1960s.
She just tuned 70 so it made me think about how that generation will soon be gone:

a Beautiful Paul Westerberg song that has been haunting me for many years. I finally decided to learn it and get it recorded. A short 2 minute song. Been listening to a lot of Westerberg's songs lately. Here's my attempt at it:

It's been a real long time since I had the time to write and record anything.
It's also been a while since I had any desire to pick up my guitar.
Yesterday the wife and kids went to a movie so I decided to take the quiet 2 hours and record a song I had written recently but just could not muster the desire or proper time to record.
Had to get this one off my chest after all these years. Song is about my attempt to Love a substance abuser 3 decades ago. Thought I could save her and show her a better life......Beautiful gal but damaged beyond repair.....

The original song I wrote was over 6 minutes long which was too long so I editied it down and remastered the audio for this video.

One of Neil Young's biggest hit songs and its easy to understand why. It's a beautiful song. This song got way overplayed on the radio when it was new. I remember hearing this one and Heart Of Gold a lot on the radio.

I learned this song from a songbook decades ago and haven't played it much since. Decided to commit my rendition to video.

This is a song written in 1978 by Peter Afendoulis (aka Fendouglas).
This performance is by Joe Chiovari using his own musical arrangement to Peter's lyrics.
Joe recorded this in December 2009.
I produced the video and remastered the audio track for the video.
Joe and I are talking about doing more together.

When I first heard this recording I was floored but it definitely needed audio mastering.
Did the best I could with the compressed mp3 format.
Talking to Joe about re-recording it to WAV so audio has more fidelity.
Still, it is an important song and is worth the time to listen.

Who the hell is Blaze Foley?  well I'll include some links (also in the video description on YouTube too) if you want to find out.
Blaze died in 1989 at age 39 without releasing any albums but people are discovering the recordings he left behind and they are amazing.
He was poor and homeless and played the bars in Austin, TX and his friends included Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams.
Yet he remained in obscurity. John Prine, Merle Haggard and Lyle Lovett have each covered a Blaze Foley song.

I decided to cover his tender song "My Reasons Why" and asked his sister for permission and she was enthusiastic.
Then the director of the Blaze Foley documentary movie (yet to be released) e-mailed me some wonderful photos to use for a video!
I chose to cover this song because it was the first Blaze Foley song I heard and convinced me to look deeper and I'm glad I did. Fascinating story and Blaze didn't write one bad song! Problem is not many heard them and when he was alive he wasn't very appreciated.

Now here's the learn more about Blaze Foley part:

Kevin Triplett is the director of the Blaze Foley documentary film "Duct Tape Messiah. Find out more about the film here:

Marsha Weldon (Blaze's sister) has a website for the songs of Blaze Foley here:

For a great book by Sybil Rosen, which recounts her life with "Depty Dawg" (later to become Blaze Foley) during the 1970s, see her website here:
http://www.sybilrosen.com/blaze.htm

For a great article on the life of Blaze Foley by Writer, Historian and Texan Joe Nick Patoski (published in the Sept.-Oct. 2006 issue of No Depression you can read the full article "The Fall And Rise Of Blaze Foley" here:

And last but not least lots of great archival material and links to more information here:

Just an attempt, that's all.
Annie is such a powerful singer nobody could hope to do one of her songs justice.
So I tone it down and attempted my own solo acoustic version.
Got an immediate "dislike" on YouTube....LOL
But as Ricky Nelson once sang "Can't please everyone so you got to please yourself"

I posted this today in honor of John Lennon's memory. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten. His music continues to resonate with each new generation which is a wonderful thing. This note's for you John:

I recorded this solo acoustic but felt it needed more.
So I approached my friend Mike Perks and he added another guitar and vocal.
His wife Tanya saw what we were doing and wanted in too.
She added Bass guitar. They sent me their videos and I extracted the audio from each.
Then the hard work was mixing and mastering the three tracks.
I produced al the audio and video work.
Here is the result and we are very pleased with the outcome!

Recorded this on 3/5/07 using my 1977 Guild D35-SB with capo way up on 5th.
This was before I made video of the recording so I only have audio.
I had forgotten about this and decided to dust it off and go back to the raw recording and master it again
carefully to preserve the natural sound. I chose to leave the noise at the beginning and end in.

Video is courtesy on Ivan Bridgewater of Bridgewater Video. He has made it available to the public for free
use in any way.
I changed the color on the video to blue. It is a kaleidoscope of actual clouds.

I found this cool film from the 1940s made by Southern Pacific Railroad
called "This Is My Railroad". I had done a cover of the
Neil Young & Crazy Horse song "Southern Pacific" from their 1981 re-ac-tor
album and combined it with scenes edited from the film.
The film is in the Public Domain and features some great color train
footage from back then.

Well done.  I have decided that is also how I do it.  I just get an itch and record it, with mistakes and all.

I have come to view cover songs as practice or just exercise to keep in shape.
My main focus has been writing original songs which I put more effort into.

Amazing! I know how to play 6 chords!...lol...pardon the attire
but I spent all day at the beach and had an impulse to record
this so I recorded it on the spot. Didn't feel like doing it over.
When it comes to cover songs I don't like to waste time rehearsing
and trying to do them better because when all is said and done it's
just another cover song.
I tend to play a cover when the mood strikes and then move on.

Thanks for listening guys!

I cherish this because it captures a moment, not because it is a great version. It is unrehearsed and played in the moment.

Back in 1986 I took a tape recorder to my friend Paul's house and we recorded this impromptu cover, with Paul playing guitar
and me singing, in his living room....right before this we played Pete Townshend's solo acoustic demo from "Scoop" on the
record player and Paul figured it out by ear...then we recorded this in one take.....you can hear Paul singing in the background too.

The latest original. I'm working on 3 more. Have them written just need to find the time to record.
This one is about giving it all up for Love but then having doubts about it based on past fears.
