Neighbors near and on Fly Creek met for burgers and cols drinks as well as some free style jamming.
The ladies thought my 3 boats down neighbor, Robert creel on wash tub bass and vocal was smokin' doing "summertime".

Like most of you, I relate to melody first. It is a chore to memorize lyrics.
As I get older, I am more resistant to propaganda. I retired from paying gigs last year and playing "for fun" does not include any lyrics that are not warm and wonderful.

John Lee Hooker is so revered as a blues pioneer that everybody overlooks his rhythm problem. He played alone for too long and his phrasing defies mathematics. But he still sounded great in his eighties on vocal and guitar and it is amusing to see accompanying players jump and start trying to match his chord changes.

John Lee's Gibson looks much like my 1961 ES330

Don't let the drummer rush you. His primary task is to maintain rhythm.

If you play by ear, it's a matter of fair and foul. The arppegios of the chord you're in are usually all fair notes.
Play along with recordings and note what tones the bass player on the record selects.
Bass is sooo fun. You get to play a solo along with the main melody.

What do you get when you cross a donkey with an onion?
Most often you get a really stinky onion with a bad attitude or a donkey that smells even worse.
But if you are super, super lucky and the moon phase is just right, you can get a piece of a-- that will bring tears to your eyes.

Working as a trumpet player in a jazz/rock band, I learned to sing onstage. The sound I heard was the sound coming out of the P.A. system speakers which is a true representation of your real vocal sound.
These days I prefer to play guitar and sing with no amplification but I rehearse through my P.A. so I can make improvements to my actual vocal sound.

"The Gypsy" by the James Hunter Six.
I have lyrics and chords if any of you would like to learn this one.

I got lucky and never saw action in Viet Nam. My three years in the Marines got me three years of paychecks to attend college and a five point bonus on the post office exam that was enough to get me hired. My life is so much richer for having served. I am grateful.

I am fortunate to own a 1976 Yamaha RD 400 motorcycle and a mid-70's Yamaha  dreadnought acoustic guitar.
Love 'em both.

Now that we live on a boat, I only have room for my acoustic guitar. I had to move my Gibson electric, tuba and p.a. set into my buddy's music studio.
