Hey man, check out Rayna Gellert & Susie Goehring...they have a CD called "Starch and Iron" its fiddle and guitar. I think its more Old-time then bluegrass though, amazing though. Rayna is also in the band "Uncle Earl" so look them up as well.

I could give you names of some local bands but you would have to see them live... the best bluegrass bands/players and those who play in the barn for family reunions and weddings. Bluegrass just was not made to be recorded, it does not do it justice.

If you want to play it, find people to jam with. You will learn a lot from very smart people.

We had a tornado up here in New Hampshire (figure that one out) a few weeks ago. One person was
killed. The local news station interviewed this rich-old-prick that lived a little ways away, his lake front camp was destroyed. He took the opportunity to go off about how the "Democrats are ruining this that and the other"
...hey man you neighbor died, in a freak tornado, and thats all you can say...

This ties right in to the thread. I make a motion to have all people take a test, if they don't know when to keep their mouth shut we should sew it shut for them. Who is with me?
Stupid things just make famous people more famous.

I am going out on a limb with this and i mean no offense...but if you dont want to hear somebody political views dont listen to it. Dont know what this rappers views are (i dont watch TV and i only listen to the hippy radio stations) but i have seen and been bothered by people saying this in the past. I am a folk music person, I play mostly old-time. But one of my favorite bands is Rage Against the Machine...I dont agree with all that the band has to say but i listen to it with an open mind.

Sorry about the rant and I didnt mean to offend anybody.

More on topic.
It seems, in my opinion, the bands with the least talent and creativity have the worst behavior. like they are making up for something.

here is the definition of a mandola according to Mandolin Cafe.

Mandola:

In the US, this term is usually applied to an instrument tuned one fifth below the mandolin, analogous to the viola: c, g, d, a. Europeans would refer to an instrument of this size as mandoliola, mandola in C, or tenor mandola (although this latter is a bit of a misnomer given the instrument's alto range). Some instruments have been made with an added fifth course at high e" to provide a kind of mandolin/mandola hybrid.
so a mandola is to mandolin as viola is to violin.

now the next question. they are two completely different things.

now the last question is one that you could get lots of answers on and whoever answers it swears theirs is the truth.
my answer:
"If you want to play fiddle you play fiddle. If you want to play violin you play violin"
in other words they are the same thing but played different...but sometimes not even that.
they are tuned the same and all, the "hardware" is the same too. its not in the instrument but the player.

if you really want me to i can answer the banjo question in more detail. but i thought that answer was simple enough.

im not going to screw around with my good guitar, but i have shaved down the saddle on my FirstAct. it was not too much work, i think it was more work adjusting the truss rod on it actually.

if i have shop tools why not just use a thin kerf saw blade (i would use a hand saw) to lower the slots?
