Rivercruzin, don't mean for this to sound "outta line" but you are overthinking everything. At 74 years old you ain't going to be getting any groupies or gigs to play out in public. You talk about "quarter notes", "half notes", and "full notes". That's where I think you are overthings things. Feel the music, listen for the bass notes of the song as it will give you the tempo. Try tapping your finger on a table top to the beat the bass player is playing - that will be your strum pattern. Count in your head the bass beats per measure. It takes time but it's easy. If you like some of the older country music songs I will send you some songs with the strum patterns as well as the chord changes in the proper location abouve the lyrics. All you will need is the cd so you can listen as you play the song. You may need to change the chords to match your key but that's anouther subject (but an easy one). Last week I made 3 trips to the lake, phishing. Had a great time and caught a lotta phish. Now I'm layed up with 3rd degree burns on my bottom lip. Whenever I'm outside I do take precautions against the sun's affects as I have had issues before due to the cancer medication I'm taking. One of its side affects is developing a rash and blisters due to being exposed to the sun for a prolonged period of time. BUT, this time I got a double whammy! I'm also taking an antubotic for a chest cold and, you guessed it, one of its side affects is a rash and blisters from prolonged exposure to the sun. I do cover up as much as possible and use sunscreen whenever I'm outside but I guess I over did it this time. My bottom lip is one big blister and is very sore. I'm using a medicated chap stick to keep my lips moist because if they get dry they crack open and bleed. Right now my wife is suffering as bad as I am as she misses my kissing upon her. She wants me to kiss her all the time and I just can't do it. She is having sugar withdrawal and just not in a good mood. With Christmas coming soon and my not being able to kiss her it's looking like it'll be a sad holiday around here.

Update on the song. I got the CD yesterday and began playing along with it. This CD is an album recorded by a good friend on mine that I haven't seen for many years. I haven't been able to talk to him about the key of the song and was given the CD by his sister. Anyway, the best I can tell by listening and playing along he recorded it in a third position C. The only way i can get the key to sound right is for me to capo 3rd fret and play A - D - E". This sounds right to my tired old ears so that's how I'ma gonna play it until I learn it. I'm gonna have to change the key, anyway, once my wife gets the time to sit down and sing along with me.

MKM, don't know what's up with You-Tube but it just won't work here at my wife's house. It used to work but not now. All I get is a message saying "an error has occured". I'll have the CD in my hands sometimes Wednesday so I sihould be good. Will run thru the song a couple of times with the chords RJ provided then transpose them to something my wife can sing.

Does anybody know the chords to "Where The Timbers Cross" by Walt Mills. I have the lyrics but my problem is that I need to learn the song by this coming Friday when we have our regular jam session. I have only heard the song a couple of times and I think it was in Eb. I won't have the CD in my hands until late Wednesday afternoon so I'm just trying to get a jump on the learning process. For whatever reason I cannot get You Tube to play on my 'puter so that's out. If you have or know this song your help would be greatly apreicated. This will save me a lotta time as I'm certian that I'll have to transpose the song to either G or A to work with my wife's voice. Thanks.

The guitar in question was my 1989 DY72 K Yairi 12 string. Of all the guitars I own this is my favorite. If you read my post above the 1st guy was an old friend whom I have played mysic for many, many years. He asked and I offered the guitar for him to play. The "fiddle" player was someone that I have only met once or twice. I know she is an skilled player but it was kinda taken for granted that my guitar was available for anyone to play. (she did bump the mic stand a couple of times but it was with the tuner) I don't like loaning out any of my stuff but have from time to time. Some items have came back in the same condition as the were when loaned out and some have came back dirty or broken. Anyway, this kinda ruined my night.

Last night I got kinda put on a spot. We played music with our regular group last night when one of my good froends came up to me and asked if he could use my 12 string guitar to play a song. Since this has never happened before I didn't know how to refuse so I said ok. Well he used the guitar, played his song and then bragged to everyone there on how easy it played and how good the sound was. Later on a fiddle played can in to join us who only shows up once in a blue moon. When it got to her time to sing a song she started looking for a guitar she could borrow and the guy who had just used mine stood up and said " use Dennis' guitar" as it sounds great. So, not knowing how to say no, I let her us my guitar. Now, I'm not one who borrow's other peoples stuff nor do I like "loaning" out my stuff to people I don't know really well. Then, as we continued playing around in our circle it came time for the fiddle player to get another turn - so here she came with the "can I use your guitar again". HOW DO YOU SAY NO AND KEEP THINGS CIVIL? what would you do in this situation?

rcwalto, welcome to chordie. All the above advice is "spot on". As Russell said it is important to use the side of the index finger when making a barre chord. Now this don't you need to "roll" the undex finger into an uncomfortable position. All you need to do is get the finger off the flat "soft" part of the finger and onto the "harder", side, part of the finger.
One thing that was not mentioned was string guage and set-up. Normally a acoustic guitar uses heavier strings than an electric. This is what makes barre's easier to make on an electric guitar. Medium to medium light strings will work better for barre's but you may loose a little of the bass you get with the heavier strings. Also a proper set-up with a lower action will help you in making barre chords. Now having said all this - nothing beats practice.

Just a word of caution. When and if you find a song you want to copy and place in your binder you need to understand that the song may have some errors and needs to be corrected. I've found that numerious songs with words and phrases that need to be corrected, Also, if you will listen to the song and play along you will notice that the chord location (over the words) needs to be moved. I will always print myself a copy directly from Chordie, make changes to the words and chords, as needed, then re-write the song with my correction prior to placing in my binder.
