Okay...now I get it. That actually sounds like a great way to meet people! Sort of like a street party.

I agree with you that a basic grasp of theory is always a definate advantage. But I always tell people who are stressing so over the fact that they can't get their exercises right to take a break from scales and exercises and just play a song or two they enjoy. The worst thing you can do is bury yourself so deep in theory that you eventually hate music...it has happened. Finding a balance is the thing I prefer to stress.
I also have a very strict practise schedual...I have to, I play violin, cello, piano and do very advanced voice. I use the guitar to relax, but I find myself wanting to delve deeper into guitar theory, just a habit I suppose.
To warm up I play scales but then I play whatever grabs me that day! And trust me the amount you know, judging by the posts I have read by you, you are somewhat of an intellectual! Not a bad thing if you have a good balance. So now I know who to pester with all the technical stuff! Keep the info coming, Jerome!

Do you put them on at the same time or do you mean apart? Both ways are good. But then I'll eat peanut butter with anything.
Hi Alvee.
That sounds revolting! The two together, I mean. But if you like peanut butter, you'll like my husbands favourite :
I'ts called a Gi-Gi Pie or whatever you want to call it!
Take a deep porridge plate, layer slices of bread ( smeared with peanut butter) with a tablespoon of sugar between each slice.
Stack as many layers as you want and douse with coffee ( black or white ).
And eat....As I'm typing this I'm being grossed out!!!
It's great ( apparently ) for when you need energy fast.

Hey Zurf,
You'll enjoy this one then, even if it does go against my own sex...
5 women go on holiday without husbands or boyfriends. They see a hotel that says "women only". They go inside and the bouncer is a very attravtive man. He tells them that the way this hotel works is that you go up to each of the 5 floors and read the sign, if you like what it says, you take a room there.
They go up to the 1st floor and the sign reads : All the men here are short and plain.
They decide this is not for them and proceed to the 2nd story. The sign reads : All the men here are tall but plain. Thinking this is not for them they go up to the 3rd floor. The sign here reads : All the men here are short but handsome. Thinking ,no they go up to the 4rth floor. The sign reads : All the men here are tall and handsome. As they are about to get rooms they think...well if all the men here are tall and handsome, can you imagine what's on the 5th floor?
They get up to the 5th floor where the sign reads: There is nothing on this floor! This floor was built only to show that there is no pleasing a woman!
Have a good one Zurf!

Re: Pfft, all the cool people play VIOLIN! (20 replies, posted in Other string instruments)
I play the violin and cello. I've been playing since I was 6. I find it really hard to improvise as well. I think we classical players are taught too rigidly when we start and every little mistake is seen as a flaw. Those little mistakes are actually what helps us to improvise and explore new sounds. The need to be perfect is drilled into us and the beautiful art that is music is systematically forced into a regimine of scales and lessons that we have to master. I don't argue that theory is a definate advantage when learning any instrument but I think it's worse to bury yourself under a mountain of theory and forget about the music itself. My husband has never had any lessons and cannot read music (despite my years of trying to teach him!) and he makes my cello sing! Not Bach or Motzart...Aerosmith, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presly! He even does a great double bass on my cello!

Re: tips to progress (3 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hey Theo,
I don't know how advanced you are but if you want to master some advanced skills you can always try learning the basics of theory. What makes a chord, scales, neck notes especially. If you know what note is where you can easily construct chords and do some really great picking. Don't bury yourself under theory though. The point is enjoyment afterall! I still think what makes a great guitarist is passion for your instrument and music. But a little basic knowledge will definately help you!

Re: Just a suggestion (8 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I have a degree in music but unfortunately guitar is not one of my subjects, so where it concerns guitar I am an absolute layman(or laywoman, if you prefer). I would appreciate any help whether in a different section or not. But even so, I don't know if I would want chordie to turn into a corner for music intellectuals. I like chordie because anyone can use it, a beginner in guitar like me or an obviously advanced guitarist like jerome. It's not the theory I batlle with...it's the actual playing. I decided to not go for formal lessons because I wanted to experience the guitar in a totally new way for me. So hey, whether it's in a new section or still in this one...just keep the info coming! Jerome have considered opening a bebo acc. I'd go there if you would impart some of your knowledge about the guitar and you could perhaps discuss more of the technical aspects that you seem to have studied.

Sorry to go a little postal on that but since youve probably never hunted or have met hunters and only head hunters who even hunters dislike you shouldnt be speaking on the subject.can you tell what i dislike, beside tuna, my boss, and liberals.
Hi Sanguine,
Actually we have a small game farm right in the heart of the bushveld and most of the farms around us allow hunting. Almost all of our friends hunt, the men mostly though. I deal daily with people from all countries who come for hunting. Let me explain. If you use the meat and do it in a respectful manner and give the animal the respect it is due. then by all means hunt. It is afterall a personal choice. But when the animal is "canned" and the head of the animal is chopped off and the rest is just buried....it's such a terrible waste. I don't hate anybody who hunts, I have just seen what some people like to call hunting. And that's my personal choice! Please don't assume on my behalf that I know nothing on the subject. One generally needs to know something before you can make an informed choice, don't you? And these aren't "fighting words" just an explanation as to my pont of veiw, which doesn't have to be anyone elses if they don't like it.I understand that perfectly and thanks for elaborating on your viewpoint. my father works for an outdoor company and i have grown up arpund that culture. im sorry if it looked like i was snarling at you. and i can tell you that not many of the peolpe here like headhunters either we call them yahoos. and in the future why dont you just say head hunters?
Hi Sanguine,
No, you were not snarling! I see now what you mean. In south africa we call them assholes! But you know there does come good out of hunting. 25% of all profits from hunting are applied towards conservation, so although it's not my personal choice it doesn't make anyone who does it bad! I'm going to go and edit my origional list right now!

Hey, that sounds like a great idea etc, I absolutely suck at strumming! I can pick extremely well, but never can get strumming right. Well, as long as I don't want to sing along. If I don't sing, then I can strum but add the singing then it all goes to pot!
I don't care what you call it...rythm or strumming patterns, I'd just like to be able to do it!

but my 12 string accoustic did almost the same thing and the guy at the music shop said that the heating in our house had bent the neck. So when you play the first 2 strings it gives a buzzing sound.

When I sing non-opera songs I have a very british accent because my gran was british and she used to sing with us. No american accent though.
