For what it's worth, I love the way they sound, but I hate the way they feel.  I've only played the poly's, and I thought they felt slick--I couldn't wait to get them off.  I've been playing DR's for about a year now and really like them--not as full sounding as the elixir's, but close with the same even tone.  They don't last as long, I'm sure, but I've never had any corosion issues with them.  And I tend to get pretty aggressive with my strumming & I haven't broken one yet (I'm sure the .58 pick helps with that).

I've been playing New Shoes on acoustic--loads of fun.
On electric, Heaven's so far Away--The Offspring is a great song to make the 'ol ears ring, love it.

Just did what I said I'd never do---got an amp online without ever having played through it.  So your job Chordians, is to tell me I made a great decision.

Great brand name, great rep, got a new 15 watt practice amp, Celestion 8" speaker, digital reverb / effects, two channels--the thing lists for $250 ish, $199 on the street, and picked it up for $70.

So, who has any experience with Hughes & Kettner?  How'd I do?

Frank.

I wouldn't worry about it until you start getting a buzz--you'll see the wear long before you here it when you fret a chord.  First time you take it in, they'll probably "polish" the frets, second time there's probably not enough fret left to polish them down, so they'll just replace the fret wires.
A lot of your big music stores will either lave a luthier working out of the back, or they'll be a bulliten board in the front where luthiers will post their cards--better yet, ask the guys who work there who they use.
Good luck!

I always thought the G to F was tricky, but the C to F or G barre wasn't so bad.  So on all the C G F songs out there, I play the C open (or play it at the 8th fret with the E shape if you want to make it really easy).  From the C your ring finger stays in the same place, so just plunk down your pinky & middle finger, slap the barre down and slide it up to the third fret....sounds confusing as I type this, but just practice (there's that word again), it really isn't bad.  Then just slide down to the first position for your F.  Same thing if a song goes from an E to an Am to an F.  The Am to F was always tricky for me, so I just play the E with my middle, ring and pinky, go up to the 5th position for the Am, just lifting your middle finger and barre it, and then just put it back down and slide down to 1 for the F.

I used to HATE barre chords...wouldn't even try to play a song with an F or a B in it, but now a lot of times I don't even switch between open and barre--it's just easier moving up and down the neck.  I was working on playing a D at the 10th fret last night which is new for me...so just keep practicing!

I've had an SP6 for 6 years and have loved the relationship.  I had my action lowered, and a strap peg put in so I didn't have to tie off at the headstock, and it pretty much play it all the time.  Fantastic materials / construction considering the price, have never had tuner issues--warm, rich, tone.  If you like a lot of high end response, probably not your guitar, but if a well rounded mid-range tone with a good bass response is your thing--you'll love it.  The cedar is a little soft so be very carefull--it will nick up a bit, but after 6 years mine looks just a little worn, but I think it just gives it character.

They are made in Canada--I think by the same comany that makes Seagull and Laravee.

Hope this helps!

I agree cytania--
Few years ago I printed out "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure (fun to play on accoustic!)--loved the song, problem was there as a Bm in the progression, and I just didn't do B minors!.  But I played it, or tried to, over and over and over, every time flipping through my book, and that song has a lot to do with why I don't have a problem with B minors (much) anymore.  So I'm with you, play what you feel, not what is easy or you can do that moment.

I think the song was written by Mike Cross--saw him when I was in college a million years ago...great show.  If you go to his website www.mikecross.com and click on the Child Prodigy album, you can listen to the song.  Great Stuff.

You done stomped on my heart, and mashed that sucker flat,
Baby you just sorta, stomped on my aorta.
You started steppin out with guys, I felt us drift apart,
And every step you took, was a stomp upon my heart.

If that doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.

The Epi "Special" is a lower priced version of the regular Epi, which is a nice guitar.  I have an Epi Standard, Alnico pick ups, grover tunners...good solid guitar.  A buddy of mine has a special and it isn't in the same league.

My answer for the B chord?  Just use the E shape and play it at the 7th fret--no need to rebend 'nuthin.

And NELA I cheet all the time when the B is involved--songs that go E B A, I wind up playing the E the way everyone does, just putting my pinky finger down...what would that be, the G string? and sliding those two down to 4 and barring the second fret (is that a Bsus?), and then just sliding back for the A.

The 'ol Steve Miller song "take the money and run" is just flat out dumb from the first word, but the worst is:
"Billy mack is a detective down in texas
You know he knows just exactly what the facts is
He aint gonna let those two escape justice
He makes his livin off of the peoples taxes"

The whole thing stinks--but that last like is just thrown in there, has nothing to do with anything.

thanx for letting me vent--that song has been bugging me for 20 years...probably more.

I'm in a contemporary christian band called Giants Fall--I like it....but then again, it was my idea so of course I like it.

I think album names a lot of times would make great band names--like that old Tom Petty album, Damn the Torpedo's....always thought that would be a good name.

Zurf, give me a set with Rapid Roy, Roller-Derby Queen and Workin' at the Car Wash Blues and I'm a happy camper!  Now if you throw in Good Hearted Woman & Folsom Prison Blues, now you're really talkin'.  I love all those seventh chords.

I hate any song that rhymes sky-fly and high....and there's a million of 'em.

My favorite mid range guitar's besides my Carvin, are Simon & Patrick or Seagull.  Made in Canada. Very rich / full sound.

Someone has a mini-PA where your ipod just pops into the top...saw it in some catalogue somewhere, I'll try to find it.  I think the Mackie SRM 150 is a heck of a small PA--two channels, the whole thing goes right on your mic stand I think you can find them on line for $250ish.
What about a Rolland micro cube amp? don't they run on a battery...I imagine they have an input for an ipod or something if you wanted some backing tracks.

I see a lot of new players using to much arm, and not enough wrist--instead of trying to get the arm moving faster at the elbow, try getting the hand moving faster at the wrist.

If anyone says they play Air Supply when they're alone and feeling lonely I'm going to perscribe watching Fight Club 3 times straight, take a shot of whisky and call me in the morning!

By the way, does anyone have the chords for "Sugar, Sugar" by the Archies?  Love that song!

I don't know if we're talking about slang or dialects here, but the one that gets me any more is "hook up".
I'm 46, and I'll say something like  "Lets try to hook up this weekend", meaning, lets try to get together.  But to the younger generation, "hook up" meens to have sex.  So I think I'm talking about something nice and tame like, going to a book store or something, and it's intrepreted like a proposition!! Got to watch that one.

Dunlop makes a puller, bottle cap opener that works great for both tasks.  You don't have to use leverage like you do with the ones at the end of string winders so you don't mess up your bridge.  Think I got mine from Musicians Friend for about $5.00.  It's just a notch that grabs the pin and you pull straight out.

Before I found this gizmo, I was talking to a guy at the guitar store, and he suggested taking out an easy pin or two, then reaching in the sound hole and pushing the others out from the inside.

Great post Cytania.

I'm the opposite of Nonetoxic, and if you have any input, would love to hear it.  I have a 60 watt Hartke hybrid amp, but want something smaller so my ears don't ring everytime I have a good go with my epi les paul.
I was thinking one of the line 6 modeling amps, but I hear good things about the Kustom 16 watt amp which has a celestion speaker--know anything about them?  What's your advice for an amp in the 10-15 watt range?
