zurf, for someone who has only played that song 3 or 4 times, your guitar playing on that was great. I was intently listening to the guitar in particular as I liked the way you played it, the strumming and picking style. Did I detect a nice little tap effect on the guitar as well? Nicely done, makes me want to get my guitar out and dust it off again. This is a song we used to play regularly at my first ukulele group I ever joined.
Yeah. When I was learning "Last Dance With Mary Jane," I found my arrangement a bit flat and thought it needed some percussion. I monkeyed around with using a tambourine on the floor while I played, but keeping both hands occupied, singing, and tambourining was proving to require more coordination than I felt like practicing. So I started to tap the top of the guitar with the ring and pinky finger of my pick hand while playing. I figured I was already more or less trying to keep time with my pick hand anyway, so added that in. Now I can't figure out how to stop doing it and it shows up as a technique even when I don't intend it. Like on that song.

That is so annoying, seems like someone has it in for you? Explain that you can't work like this and you'd prefer to sit out rather than do a bad job, not that you would if you had to busk but your mind would be at rest.
Nobody has it in for me. But nobody is trying to solve an obvious problem that I can't solve either.
The pastor thought he was doing me a kindness asking me to join again, but I'm going to buy him lunch and explain to him why it's not the kindness he thought it was. In any case, it was thoughtful of the pastor to think of me.
I was invited to play with my church's band again. Practices are on Thursday night. We get the music usually on Tuesday afternoon.
I had to ask to be added to the distribution. Then when I got added to the distribution for the week, there were no chord charts for two of the five songs - but only for me. There were only MP3's. So I checked with the band leader, and he said that there were chord charts and sent me a screen shot proving it. So I sent a screen shot of mine proving they weren't available to me. By 10:00PM Tuesday, I had the chord charts, but by that time it far too late to be able to prep and practice five songs by Thursday right after work. I didn't want to play if I can't be prepared and I don't think it's reasonable to expect me to. Nor do I think any bandmates would appreciate an ill prepared bassist, so I backed out of the gig.
It's worth mentioning that I played for years with this group, and literally EVERY time I took the stage with them, I have had to chase down the chord charts that everyone else gets without effort. I don't accuse them of doing it on purpose. I think there's a software glitch in my profile somewhere, but when it's the SAME THING EVERY TIME and no one learns to check the settings, it eventually gets to feeling personal. I literally schedule time to chase down the chord charts when I agree to play, but not getting them until bedtime, leaving me one evening to prep five songs and be ready for practice seemed like too much for me to handle.
One more thing - as I age my anxiety has increased exponentially. It was off the charts last night. It took a handful of pills (all legal) and splitting a rack of wood to calm down even a little bit. It spun me up but good. I don't think I should have to suffer anxiety attacks to volunteer. But I have never, ever backed out of a gig and feel some guilt about it.

And I'm going to try to record something for March now that it's April to average out my prior error.

I guess I'm a day or two ahead of schedule. Here's a "World" submission. A version of Cat Stevens' Wild World played on a Breedlove OM Retro guitar in Nashville tuning. This makes me sing higher than I usually do, but it's all good(ish).

Hi Zurf. Any chance of letting us know what equipment and software you've acquired?
I'm using Reaper now, rather than Audacity.
My interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 212. I only need one XLR for a mic, and one 1/4" jack for my instrument. So it works for me. I hade been going through an analog USB Peavey PV-8 (which still works fine for PA use - though I get a nasty 60 cycle hum unless the electric is clean).
I posted a version of "Rex's Blues" on my SoundCloud page.
Rough-as-gut left a note that he'd like to hear me take on a song for which I don't know how it's "supposed" to sound, especially if it was one of his.
I tried to reply, but I couldn't figure out how. So here's my reply - Send it on! I'm up to the challenge, and I'd enjoy the collaboration!
And yeah, I know our good looking brother sent me one of his songs to do, and I lost it and never performed it. But yeah. I'll do another one. Send them.
Now, to no one and everyone. I can't promise you'll enjoy the results.

I'm going to try to figure out a song to play. Some of you may be pleased to learn that I have upgraded my sound equipment and software. Others may be sad to learn it, having given me the benefit of the doubt with poor equipment and software - LOL!
I guess it's time to give a try at a song I haven't played on a song-of-the-month before, if I could even remember what they were.

I think BGD is around Dallas/Fort Worth. Maybe it would be easier to fly to him and we'd drive down together. This is cool. We're going to have to think about it.
Have you got space to put us up, or are we going to need to rent a cabin or an AirBnB (this is not a trick question)?
I'm heading to Florida in March some time to pick guitars and hassle fish, so another trip isn't likely this year, but if it is, it would likely be the fall. Is that a good time?

It's not because I didn't plan right. I've got the money to retire. But it's in programs for which the government prevents me from accessing the money without penalizing me terribly if I access my own money in order to not work.

Zurf that guitar of yours has got a beautiful tone and you sing and play Rexs Blues real good. I liked your spoken intro, introducing the song also.
It's a beauty of a guitar. I bought it from Dirty Ed. It's the second guitar I bought from him, and given the quality of the two I've bought from him, and the mojo he has made sure to cram into them before they came my way, I'll keep buying every guitar he sells for the rest of our lives.

To be clear *I* don't fish with Rex. I learned that a guy that I know through fishing is a friend of Rex's. Not me. I've never met him. But I figured to give a try at performing the song for my friend. It's a good song. I like it. I particularly like the line that nothing's dark until something shines.
Townes Van Zandt wrote a song called "Rex's Blues." It's been recorded by Townes, Guy Clark, and Rodney Crowell (I think). It turns out that Rex of Rex's Blues is a friend of a guy that I know from fishing. My fishing friend is named Kelly, and is generally referred to as "Kel".
Anyway, I promised Kel that I'd try to record a version of Rex's Blues for him. Here it is, if you're interested.
I am linking out to a different site, so Chordie is not accountable for any abuse I may have done of a song about a friend of a friend about which I have not earned a dime and for which the writer has long since died.

What a blast. The body was mostly started as a kit, and the top had the shape to it, but not sized. The neck was also a piece of stock. I built it from there. To do the body from scratch would have been outside the scope of the class, but I did learn a good bit about how acoustics are made, shaped, and assembled.
I need to finish it now. The body, neck, and headstock will be blue. The top will be "natural." The body is made of curly maple and the top of cedar.
I made the neck in a D shape, but I'm regretting that and will likely take some of the edge of the D off on the top of the neck to give it more of a C shape there tapering to a D shape in the upper registers.
I'll show it off once I've stained and finished it.
If anyone wonders, putting on a four layer binding is a HUGE PAIN IN THE NECK!!!! Everything else is pretty darned cool.
I hope all of that misery is behind you and there's nothing but good things coming your way this season and beyond.
