Hey Clarey and Old Doll,
Well the fathers day went well and while I never got a new guitar I did get a lot of music!!  I celebrated by quickly writing my children a song for them too.  Called, "Thank You's For Being You's"  But must admit got a bit emoional when I played it to them. (Must be getting tender in my old age!)
The next time I get a chance to spend some time on here I will try and post a song okay?  In the mean time I have been happily reading all the posts here.  Must say I love this site.
"Fiafia" is pretty much a party or a gathering that has more than one person.  It is a time when song and dance and lots of fun take place and like the Irish guys we have them as much as we can.
I was looking through a Ireland Rugby web site and there seems to be a few Samoan guys over there playing.  Good on them.  Oh yeah, my selection for the Rugby world cup which starts this week.........well the final will between Ireland and Samoa !!!!  Good Luck.
Old Doll your grasp of the Samoan Language "Gagana Samoa" comes very easily.  So cool and very good.
Can you please tell me how, Slainte is prononced.  Is it Ceelantee ? Please excuse me if it totally wrong.
Okay I shall head off........don't tell anyone because I am writing this at my work.
I promise I shall try and post a song or two for your comment.

Hi Old Doll and Clareaustin,
Right Where do I start !!  Firstly, the name Don Corleone, well it was given to me by some old army guys I served in Asia with as they reckoned I was the Godfather!  And the nickname just stuck. My real name is (well I have several, hard to explain but in English) Ray Fidow.  In Samoan, its Lamoni Niko Fidow.
The South Amercians do seem to be resemble Polynesians, some anyway.  I was in Argentina a few times and quiet often got mistaken for a local.  Some of the traditions are very similar as are some of the musical instruments.  In Peru and Chile, I found that some of the words to describe certain things as very similar too.
I am glad you enoyed the Islands radio.  Some of the traditional music relies very much on harmonies between the male and female range of voices.  But yeah, we tend to sing about anything and everything.  I have written a few "Island beat songs" and when I work out how to post them I will!!!
Clareaustin, I am not sure where you live but I have loved this site as it takes me to many places around the world with all you fellow music lovers.  So Cool.
It is Fathers Day here, so I am off to await all those lovely presents my children will bring to me !!!!!!!!!!!!!  New guitar, amp, ........................yeah right !

Ray

Hey Guys,
No Don Corleone is my 'nickname' !  My family name is: Fidow.  No I have never been to Portugal but I have been to Brazil a few times where Portugese is the language.
Try this site for a explaination of traditional Samoan music.  But these days just about any music is played and performed.

Saw Rod Stewart at the horse races one day.  Was going to ask him if he wanted my rendition of Maggie May but when I saw the 842 bodyguards he had, I thought I better tone it down, so I sung - "Do You Think I'm Sexy".............. Got 72 hours in the cells for that! .................Just joking

Hey ClareAustin,
Family Trees etc are really cool.  Our Samoan ancestry was usually passed down orally.  My grandmother, could sit for hours telling who belonged to who and who went where and where.  Unfortuately, no one bothered to record anything and most of our family history was lost when she died. A few years ago one our old people in the family did a really good job and traced our surname back to Portugal.  Funny thing was that the first offical record of our family stated that the person was listed as a buccaneer!!  He must've liked Samoa, cos we been there ever since!
Hey Old Doll thanks so much for the site you posted about McQueen.  Brilliant.  Thank you.

Hey Michel,
Beautiful place you live in, loved the clip.  You have something so special to be proud of.  I have been a big fan of Gordon Lightfoot and Jim Croce for years, that's how old I am !!  And Harry Chapin is one of my all time greats.

Hey'  Hope your sleep was good LOL
I am Samoan but I live in New Zealand ! And yes Ofisa is playing over your way.  The reason the All Blacks are a good team is because of all the Samoans in the team !!!! LOL.
My maternal grandmothers maiden name was McQueen not sure if that is Irish or Scottish?
I had a friend who once went to Ireland for a holiday.  He has never come back, married, settled down and now has a big family.  Something must so beautiful over there!!

Totally agree with most of you guys.  When I hear a song these days I think firstly of the video.  Like all of us I have seen a video and been captured by the 'clip'.  The music is almost irrelevent.  But having wrote that, I have also been pursuaded to buy music because the video clip is so good.  I have also heard some great songs with very average clips.  The worst videos are the ones that I just don't understand ???  Like there is abosolutely nothing to do with the song.
No matter how good the video is though, LIVE is the best.

Hey Everyone,
Many years ago as Rhodesia was changing to Zimbabwe, I was part of the Commonwealth Security Force that was sent to monitor the changeover.  Our job, as soldiers, manily consisted of checking all the ZANU and ZAPU soldiers who came in to 'lay down' their arms after the cease fire.  Usually there was only a few of us at various checkpoints, all from different countries.  I was with a Brit, a Canadian and a Fijian soldier.  Anyway after getting to know each other we all discovered our love for music and while we were preparing our 'checkpoint' we would normally break into a song or two.  The Fijian guy was a master of the guitar and had smuggled one from Salisbury to our checkpoint in the bush.  Anyway after a few days of sparadoically greeting a few rebels, we had no 'visitors' for about a week.  So our day consisted brewing a cuppa, eating and singing the days/nights away.  We were supposed to have a sentry on a few yards up the track but we figured there was a ceasefire on so what the hell.
One beautiful morning about 0700hrs, we were enjoying a cigarette after our morning breaky when the Fijian guys says have we ever heard this song and starts to play "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones.  Well, we all loved that song so off we go on our rendition of Mick and the boys.  It sounded so sweet echoing around the place and our harmonies were spot on.  So we took it from the top and sang it again.  On about our 3rd rendition I look up the track and there before all of us is over 100 ZANU rebel soldiers.  The closest is about 10 feet from us. All packed to the hilt - AK's loaded, camo on, bandanas oily with sweat.  A very surreal moment then occured, when the lead soldier, who looked like he had just come out of hell,  says in the most beautiful english, "Are you guys a band?  I like that song."  Then breaks out into the widest grin you have ever saw.
I tell you that event will always stay with me.  Brilliant.  Now each and every day I play "Wild Horses" and think of my friends that were with me on that track in the middle of no where.  And more especially about the ZANU soldier and how his life is going.

Hey pefenheitenaught,
Not sure if I am a night owl, but I work at one job from around 2pm until midnight, and then start my next job at 5.30am and that goes through to around 1pm.  And then I do it all again !  Every 4th week I work from midnight to 7am and then straight to my next job until 3pm, then sleep.  Unlike last_rebel I never have a problem going to sleep.  I could fall asleep right now!  There is something really good about being exhusted all the time...............I just haven't found what yet?
