Yup, sure is Guitarpix.  Great guitars.  Ed Robertson from Barenaked Ladies plays one.  I tried them out last summer when I was in the market for a new acoustic/electric.  Ended up with a Taylor.  Economics was a big factor.  The Laravee's (sp?) were more money for what I got with the Taylor.  Sounded great though.  Well made.

Absolutely, to all of you!  I was on here a year or more before I felt that I had anything to contribute, that's why I never responded.  I was very new to the guitar and forums or had experienced some bad habits on other forums.  And like a few I was learning from all your wisdom but when I did finally have something to contribute, I was given a very warm welcome.  big_smile  I always feel bad when I see a post not even answered though.  I feel like I should at least say, Hey, good question/comment or whatever but I really don't know, you know? Nothing worse than nobody even acknowleding you.  And then there's been times that I've done that or tried to give what knowledge I might have and not even been given a "thank you" from the poster.  So I guess it's a two way street.  Maybe some people just don't want to put themselves out there to be taken advantage of?????  I know the regular's on here are always appreciative though and to you I tip my hat!  And to everyone else, don't be shy, join in, we don't bite.  wink

Cheers

I know I'm late to the party on this one but how about:
Every Breath you Take - The Police.  Just saw them on the Elvis Costello show, Spectacle on Friday talking about how they couldn't understand why so many people use this in their wedding and if you listen to the words it's really not a very "loving" song although the Melody is really beautiful.  It was pretty funny to hear them talk about it.

Have been watching Spectacle for a couple of months now & I agree, it's an excellent show. I'd watch anything with Elvis C in it, though! Only problem is that for some reason it's hidden away late at night & quite easy to miss as a result. An intelligent show about music should be more primetime IMHO.
Have not heard of Austin City Limits at all. Anyone heard of Later with Jools Holland (BBC2)? Usually pretty good, but totally live, so performances do vary a bit! I can also very much recommend Radcliffe & Maconie on BBC Radio 2 - great range of music/very knowledgeable/very funny! Should be available worldwide, thanks to the old interweb. It helps if you get the British sense of humour!
Anyhoo, just love Elvis & his songs - I have a stab at playing  a few of them (Red Shoes, Candy, Alison, God's Comic, Working Week, Everyday I Write The Book).
Love the little guitarist RavenLady, is that you? Used to have friends in Calgary, but seem to have lost touch - would be there like a shot, otherwise!
Cheers again,
Paul.

Hey Paul,  Just found that little animated gif online, google search.  Though it almost looks like a girl, so I picked it. smile

Yes, Love Elvis Costello's music and his show.  I have a collection of Saturday Night Live DVD's.  Think it's called the first 25 yrs of music.  Great collection to have.  Not only all the best performances but some of the artist's doing skits with the cast.  Anyway, Elvis was one of the first guests.  I actually remember watching the show where he came on and was supposed to do one song, started the first few notes, stopped his band and played something else entirely.  All the while the director going NUTS.  But it's a great performance.  Haven't learnt any of his songs yet.  I must see about remedying that.

I've seen acts on you tube from Later with Hools Holland.  Looks like a very cool show.  Love British television too.  We're lucky to get Elvis's new show on a HD channel that shows it's schedule earlier than the regular stations.  It's our Friday night show now, for sure.  Just at the right time.  Finished dinner, dishes, a little jam of our own and then we can sit down and enjoy the show.  smile

Cheers

Now for "Song writing" how hard can it be?

I have the most trouble with songwriting. Don't know why? I have pages of lyrics in a book and several chord progressions with fill riffs, patterns, and such wrote down but putting them together is a different story. I find it works best for me if I just come up with the music and make the words up as I play it.  I thought it would be easy.... I wrote a lot in college, even had some short stories and poetry published, But songwriting has proven to be a challenge! I guess it's like anything else though, you just work and work on it and one day it will sort of fall into place...Right?? Maybe I'm just too critical of my own work, but my lyrics never really seem to express what I want to or in the depth that I intend. -Pix

I've done the same thing Guitarpix.  But I also think that we're our own worse critics.  Keep at it.  I know I am.  smile

Hey Detman, I'm so happy that you and Zurf might get together to jam.  That's awesome!  I feel like you too sometimes.  I started playing the guitar about 3 yrs ago, after a 25 yrs absence.  I was a very, very novice player at that time and my playing skills have drastically improved since I took it up again.  All those years ago I lived around many people who played.  Amateur mostly but quite a few professionally too.  There would always be a jam going on somewhere.  It was great.  My boyfriend, who was a musician, was also teaching me how to play bass.  When I broke up with him and moved away I stopped.  Partly because all the instruments were his and partly because I couldn't afford to buy my own.  Now that I'm playing again I have nobody where I live now to jam with either.  So a year into my new hobby I got my husband a small drum and then a Bass, so now we jam together.  smile I still wish I had another guitar player to play with and learn from though.  Maybe someday.  But maybe you could get your wife an instrument of some sort.  Even a tambourine!  It's been great for our relationship.  We're our own biggest fans!  big_smile  Anyway, you guys have a great time when you get together.  All the best.  Happy Easter.

Hehe, I'm happy too! Thank you. I have considered surprising my wife with a clarinet.
She used to play in middle school and I think she would be awesome on it again.
The thing is finding a good one for less than 1000 dollars. Hiding the purchase from her on the books is going to take some creativity...hehe.

Maybe phone around to some schools that have a band or music class.  Or music stores.  They might have some good 2nd hand ones for sale?  Good Luck!

Hey All,

Anybody catch the new Elvis Costello show, "Spectacle" yet?  It premiered here last Friday night.  Elton John was his first guest.  It was really great.  Elvis has a great band he and his guests perform with.  Inbetween songs they sit and chat.  Elton talked about musicians who influenced his career and people he performed with as a young artist.  New artist's he's into at the moment, up and comers.  Most of the songs they played were from those people they discussed.  It's on in my neck of the woods tonight and Sting and the Police are the guests tonight.  I think Allison Kraus is a guest next week.  Can't wait.  I've seen it advertised on Bravo on Sunday's too.  And I think it's on Sundance Channel as well.  Just type it into Google to find out.  Or as they say, Check your local listings!  It's a must see.

Nice RavenLady.  I wish I could get my wife to play or sing along.  She's got a beautiful singing voice and has a seamingly innate sense for music.  She had two years of piano lessons she didn't want when she was a very young lady, but the lessons of timbre and pitch and rhythm have lasted all these years.  Sometimes when she's had a couple glasses  of wine and the friends are around the campfire in the back yard, she'll sing along.  I love that.  My little girls have started to sing along.  I love that too.  They ask for the same lullaby every night -"Featherbed" by John McCutcheon.  I must have sung that song 10,000 times now.  Each of them asks for it every night.  They've been memorizing it, and now they sing it with me.  With the eldest, I've started taking in my guitar and accompanying.  It's awful to hear from the perspective of anyone outside the room, but the two of us in there think it's the sweetest music ever made.

Zurf that's great about you and your kids!  It's wonderful that they live in a home with such musical parents and inspirations/influences.  Way to go!  Maybe you just need to get more wine for your wife.  wink

Hey Tine,  Sorry to hear you're sick.  Nothing worse.  When I get a bad cold or flu I have a couple of home remedies that really help.

For sore throats gargle with 1/2 a cup of warm water and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.  Stir well and gargle a couple of times.  Don't swallow!  smile  Do that a couple of times a day.  It really helps.

Then I make a homemade ginger tea.  Grate some fresh ginger, a couple of tablespoons.  Pour about 3 cups of hot water over it and let it steep for 20 minutes.  Strain and add fresh lemon juice and honey to taste.  Drink all day.  It reheats really well in the microwave too.  All three of those ingredients are antioxidants and are chock full of vitamins, minerals and other good stuff for your body when you're sick.

Get well soon.

gitaardocphil.  Amen to the Kinks!  I think Ray and Dave Davies, The Kinks, are one of the most underappreciated bands of the era.  And of Classic Rock.  They were like the brothers in Oasis of their day.  Angry and didn't get along but amazing musicians that made great music together.  Their guitar sound was insane for the time.  I'm with you about those days too.  It was so much fun to go into a record store and look at the top 40 new releases.  To buy a new 45 single with a A and B side was sheer joy.

Sounds like you're doing pretty great Micky, considering how long and such.  Do you have any other guitar players, more experienced that can guide you and play with?  That would surely help.  For me it's probably just been the last year or so that I've gone, WOW, I can actually play this thing!  smile  It's a pretty great feeling and revelation.  I've been playing since Sept. 06 but I've also been taking lessons since then too.  But there were definitely milestones throughout the almost 3 yrs I've been playing.  You'll try to learn something at one point and you just can't quite get it.  Then you'll come back to it and BAM!  You got it!  Don't let it get you down if you can't take lessons though.  Just keep plugging away at it.  If you don't have anyone to learn from, maybe put up a notice somewhere.  Your commumity or rec hall, grocery store, pub wherever.  Post a notice that you'd like to jam with other like minded musicians.  And listen to music and play along to it.  I know that's helped me.  Good luck!

Pink I already mentioned.  smile  I think she's pretty cool.  smile  I'll have to check out the other new ones mentioned.  Thanks guys.  What a great and varied responses from this topic.

Here's another one I like.  Wallis Bird.  Here's a bit of info on her.  Pretty amazing that she can play the guitar left handed or at all!

"Five: the number of fingers on Wallis’s left hand that were severed by a lawnmower when she was 18 months old… And four of them were sewn back on. ‘Pretty good for 23 years ago, eh?’ she says, waggling them. Born left-handed, soon after coming out of hospital she was trying to play her guitar again, even though she was heavily bandaged. It was good physical therapy, she thinks. To watch her strum and bash and tug at her guitar now, you’d never know. Indeed, she wouldn’t be the mesmerising guitar player she is now if it wasn’t for the accident: her injuries meant Wallis learnt to play on a right-handed guitar, albeit one flipped upside-down. Which means the strings are back to front. Which means Wallis Bird’s chord fingerings and playing style are pretty much unique."

Here's one of my fav songs of hers.  The Circle!  Her album, "Spoons" is defintely worth a listen to.  She just looks like she's having so much fun.
