Magenta    "I'm Alive"    Porth, Wales, 2005

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NgBQgx0WLU

Haven't had any Magenta up for a long time ... overdue. Vocalist Christina Booth has a haunting quality to her voice, different than the expressive power of Tracy Hitchings from last week's entry by "Landmarq". The song is from their 2005 DVD "The Gathering", which featured the brilliant musical arranging of Magenta's founder and multi-instrumentalist Rob Reed (on keyboards here). While writing for the band's debut album in 2000, Reed gave the following explanation for what they were attempting:

"Current prog bands are always scared and shy about admitting the influences of the great bands of the 70's, and I wanted to come clean and admit and celebrate those influences, and hopefully create something as worthwhile as those classic bands. To do this, all I had to do was to give priority to melody rather than technical showmanship, something I have always tried to do with all my work."

Hey Jim ... another one in progress, eh? Good for you! The wiring for a Les Paul is indeed a bit more complex than a Strat, 'cuz we can't buy a pre-wired pick-guard and just drop it in. It's pretty hard to go wrong with pickups from Guitar Fetish (1/2 to 1/3 the price of brands) and here's the link to their Humbucker selection:

An original Les Paul pickup would have had Alnico II magnets, and the GF "Classic II" has that traditional tone of the original Gibson "Classic 57's" or "490's.". The GF website has sound bites for most of their products, so you can hear how they sound ... just run your laptop through a decent set of speakers.

For what it's worth, I'm going to build a Les Paul for a winter project, and am planning a set of Seymour-Duncan P-Rails for it ( https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/p- … et-black-3 ). They're a lot more $$$, but I love the versatility they offer, with 3 distinct pickup voicings for each one.

Gotta ask .. .what color are you going to dress it up with?

Thomas Oliver    "Jurassic Park" themes

Very creative use of a lap steel, using some finger-style techniques to play these evocative themes. And a gorgeous instrument, too ... by the way.

Nicely written, and great metaphors ... really like it. This would make a great folk ballad, with some softly-played Dobro backing it up.

We've had a stretch of hot, humid weather, with only a couple hours rain in the past 4 weeks ... my lawn is brown. There have been several days where our temps have exceeded 40-degrees C (that's about 105 Fahrenheit). After a cool / damp June, we're on pace for a record high / dry July.

That's a very different bass guitar than I've ever seen, Zurf ... 23" scale, eh? They're usually around a 34" scale, so it would feel weird for someone used to regular fret spacing. I also wondered about how "big" the voice would be on such a small box, but glad to hear it sounds good. My advice? Buy it!

Glad your guitar is back in service, DE ... nicely done. As you have said, fixing a hole in a polyethylene 'yak isn't easy, because nothing really sticks to it. I don't know if you've ever tried welding PET, but it's not difficult. Here's one of many vids on YouTube about it. If you just get a piece from a laundry soap jug that's the same color and a heat gun, it actually does a very good job ... the narrator sounds like Kermit the Frog: lol

Hi Phill ...

I usually have a quick view to verify if it's SPAM, and then report it. If it's in one of the 3 Forums I moderate, I first move it to the Spam folder, and then ban it. As you suggest, I wouldn't buy one of these products if it was indeed the greatest thing since sliced bread. Understanding that, I don't know why anyone would hire a marketing company to annoy people by spamming discussion forums. Perhaps they're so desperate / gullible, that they actually hope / feel it might work? Pathetic.

Thanks, DE ... lots of great info in your post. My preliminary scouting for a SOT has me looking at something like this Cabela's unit. I like the ability to stand when being used on a lake, because I fly fish 90% of the time. I like the Perception I have mainly because it has a deep hull compared to most. With size 14 feet, I need that so I can sit comfortably inside, and operate the rudder properly. I'll probably continue to use a SIK for rivers, because they're more nimble in Class 2 and 3 water.

When it says "chorus" - what exactly does that mean ?
I am assuming it's not back up singers ! smile  smile

Jim

Hi Jim ...

I grinned when I saw your comment about having a bunch of back up singers in a box ... good one. big_smile A chorus effect basically makes your guitar sound like there are several guitars playing in unison. It will mirror what you play exactly, with just a very slight amount of delay alongside. This has the effect of "fattening" the individual notes a bit. Although Chorus can be used with a distorted sound, it really shines with a clean signal, and also sounds great with a bass guitar.

I hope this is useful ...

Landmarq     "Mountains of Anglia"    Zoetemeer, Netherlands, 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roB8iX9fLnI

These guys don't have enough live music on YouTube for my liking, so I pounce on it whenever a new entry is posted. Guitarist Uwe D'Rose makes great use of delay in the 1:30 intro, and then in comes Tracy Hitchings with her powerful voice. I've told Tracey's story before about being a survivor of two types of cancer. Tracy sadly left Landmarq last year, but they've got a new lineup together, and plan to release a new album in 2019. The song is from their 2012 CD called "Entertaining Angels", and this cut is from their 2013 tour DVD called "RoadSkill".

Hey TIG ... that doo-hickey is called an "eBow", and it sets up an infinite sustaining vibration in the string it's touching. Eva's one of the few I've seen who will play different notes while holding it. Here's a bit of info about it and how it works, in case you're dying to blow some $$ on a new gadget someday:

That's certainly one bad thing leading to another, DE ... so sorry to hear about your damaged 'yak and guitar. A double whammy like that, plus having to endure the heat, makes this trip a week to forget. Hopefully better trips are ahead, and that your guitar is repairable.

I've often thought about a SOT, because I've got a couple of SITs that I'm finding harder to get in and out of with each passing year (Perception Prodigy 12' and a Wilderness Systems Pungo 12'). They're a drier ride in the cold water of April, but wearing my waders while paddling would solve that. If you don't mind me asking, what do you use for a SOT?

Thank-you, CG ... I'm very glad you enjoyed it. When you mentioned that you saw evidence of classical guitar training, I decided to see how much. Here's the bio of her studies, which is very impressive. What I especially enjoy & appreciate about her playing is that she's unafraid to step outside of tradition in places in order to be creative.

This one has an eerie feel to it ... she creates a very surreal feel with the composition, use of the eBow, and the restrained tempo.

Hey Russell ...

I got to try out an XVive wireless setup at our local music store this past Saturday, and was amazed at the quality of the signal. I walked about 40' from the amp, and it was just as clear and strong as if I was plugged in with a cable. The guy at the store said the battery in it lasts longer with Passive pickups than with Actives (makes sense) but there would be ample capacity for a jam session or gig with either. big_smile BOSS also makes their version of this technology, but he said (surprisingly) it's not nearly as good. He also pointed out that the XVive is hinged, so on a Les Paul type of jack, it can be tucked closer to the body, which the BOSS won't:

I'm not sure how it happened, but my favorite wood working / tinkering music is Reggae. It has enough energy to be enjoyable, but almost no aggression ... great for when stuff goes wrong, so I don't react like the Yosemite Sam. lol

We've all developed our own style of playing, and can usually look back to a few well-known guitarists that influenced us. These musicians may not be our favorites or even in a genre we like, but it's their style that made an impact on our's. Looking back, these are the mine:

Acoustic:
Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)
Cat Stevens
Bruce Cockburn

Electric:
Alex Lifeson (Rush)
Steve Hackett (Genesis)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

Bass:
Chris Squire (Yes)
Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)
Nick Beggs (various)

Whose playing style has most helped to shape yours?

King Crimson    "21st Century Schizoid Man"    Japan, 2015

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3028oDEKZo4

KC founder Robert Fripp established his new independent recording label DGM Live in 1992 (Discipline Global Mobile) for the express purpose of producing high-quality multi-angle video / recordings of some of their live work. This re-work of their 1969 song from "In the Court of the Crimson King" features singer Jakko Jaksic doing an admirable Greg Lake cover. An amazing drum solo by Gavin Harrison (formerly of Porcupine Tree) is featured, backed by drummers Pat Mastoletto and Mel Collins. Fripp said that this song was dedicated to the American statesman Spiro Agnew, although the lyric references are vague. The "trippy hippy" culture of that day loved the impressionistic album cover.
