I believe it's hard to judge YOUR own music since we do become a little too critical of our sound. I try to judge my sound by the comments I get, or lack of, from the people listening. Prior to playing I try, during practice, to tweak everything as best as I can. During a "sound check" last minute touches can be made to improve everything you have put into place. I like a lotta styles of music but mostly stick to the older country, blues, light gospel. Since I play rythem, I want to hear the song through the strums and chord changes. I don't want to sound like another player, I want to sound like myself. I want to play for the person singing so they can follow the melody of the song. Together, at least for me, these are the 2 key elements for the success of the song.

I have a very stressfull job and when things don't go right I can't help but bring them home with me. Now ya'll gotta understand I work away from home. I spend Sunday night through Thursday night living in my travel trailor and Friday night & Saturday night at my home with my wife. While I am in my travel trailor I have no problem in falling asleep for about 2 hours. Then I wake up, look at the clock, fall back to sleep, and each hour after, almost to the minute, I wake up, look at the clock and go back to sleep. I am fully aware of what is going on, don't have to go to the bathroom or get a drink, just gotta look at the dad-gum clock and can tell you what times I looked at the clock the next day. Now when I am home and able to sleep in my own bed I find that if I spend 2 to 3 hours begging and pleading with my wife the 2 to 3 minutes spent on lovemaking causes me to sleep like a baby throught the night with no problems.

Everything stated above is true and not meant to be a joke (even the 3 minutes on a good night)

You can put lipstick on a pig but it will still look like a pig. I have a $700.00 Takamine Electric / Acoustic and play thru a $400.00 AC 60 Roland acoustic amp. With this equipment I get what I consider to be excellant sound that works well with the style of music I play. I've played along side of "high dollar" Martins, miked and amped, and feel as though I am on equal ground with them. Even had a Martin player ask if he could use my guitar / amp to do a couple songs. Good sound is matching your equipment to your music style.

Sockmonkey, welcome to Chordie. You got questions we got answers.

Most songs have a given format of :

Intro
1st verse
2nd verse
Chorus
Solo
3rd verse
Return to Chorus
Tag.

This could be in any order but this will hold true for a lotta songs. The Intro chords are usually the chords within the 1st verse (solo is usually the same as well). My suggestion (and this is what I do) is to get a CD of the song, print out the sheet music, make sure the chords on the sheet music and the CD are in the same key. Once you have done all this begin listening to the CD, while listening you will start to pick up the rythem of the song (pick out something in a 4/4 timing and a simple 3 chord progression). In 4/4 timing there will be 4 beats per measure.
As you listen to the CD try to count the beats per mesure. This will be something like 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & repeat. (the repeat begins a new measure) Once you can get a feeling for the beat counts you will see how they equate to the strum pattern and when the chord changes occur. This is not something that you will be able to learn overnight. Prior to trying to learn a song I would suggest trying to learn some simple 3 chord progressions in G, C & D or D,
G & A or A, D & E until you become familar with them. Set up ypur own practice routine and practice.

Try this: (simple up and down strum with up = 1 and & = 2)

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1.

And repeat.

James, welcome to Chordie. What type of music are you playing? Country, R n R, Blues? If you been playing a lotta 3 chord songs, such as country, try sometning a little faster - it'll be a challange. Try a little 12 bar blues. (any key) Lotta Country / R n R played in a 12 bar progression.

Well, this will most likely ruffle a few feathers but here goes. Will Ken (Upyerkilt) be missed by his Chordie Family? Yes. Can I do anything about his reasoning for deciding to leave this forum and change that? No. If those of us who have been around for a while will admit it, Ken has really said (typed) some things that went way overboard. Would I fault him for that? Possibly. Was he wrong for the way he responded to some posts? Could be but I'm sure he had his reasons for his responses. To me it kinda sounds like someone who has been chastised by their piers, getting mad, gathering up their toy's and going home. Ken, pull yore drawers outta your crack and get back in here with the rest of us. Regardless of whats happened, thats all in the past and we are moving forward. I will gladly welcome you back but I ain't gonna feel sorry for you.

Say it ain't true. Good company - wrong leadership - see's dollar signs - makes bad decision - reputation ruined. Just don't make good business sense. And with the smart people running the investagation you can bet money that if they can prove the trees were illegally hasrvested, all the wood will be destroyed. What a shame.
