I'd say in most cases yes a high end 2nd tier brand would be better than a low end premium brand. Jerome gives great advice above; play as many as humanly possible. Personally. I'm a big fan of some lesser known brands. You pay extra for the premium name...especially Martin. I have a Yahama F series that I think plays better than some of the lower end Martins. I think people will pay for the headstock that says Martin and Martin knows this.

I assume you're talking about an acoustic...I have a Takamine G Series 6 string electric acoustic that I love. It plays as well as anything I've tried. But to each their own. Just try not to get caught up in the name game. Buy the guitar that feels the best for YOU regardless of what the head stock says.

I don't listen to the radio anymore. It wasn't an effort or boycott on my part. I just found it plain old sucks. I will occasionally listen to college radio. At least they still play what they want (be it good or bad) rather than what they're being told. I think the 50's was probably the peak (I'm a little too young to remember that) but for me 60's AM radio's collection of music was great.

Eva is great!!! She's a fantastic player as well. Very smooth work.

It's easy to forget how good Jerry Reed is with the whole Smokey and the Bandit thing. And of course Chet Atkins is no slouch either!!!!!! Thanks for the link.

Good news?  Sure.   You've got work and you like your boss (at least you better).  You've got a warm, dry home.  You've got food in the pantry and a bottle with some whisky nearby.  You woke up on the right side of the dirt today.  Best of all you've got friends and family around to help you enjoy it.   I'd say you're a well-blessed woman.

He plays better than I do with arms. Maybe I'm approaching this instrument the wrong way?...
All kidding aside, simply amazing and inspirational. Thanks for the link Ken. They say "where there's a will there's a way".

I gotta say, I was enjoying that thread and everyone was being very respectful and their thoughts were lucid. I posted once but was enjoying other member's views. I feel like it helps you get to know someone. I was dissappointed to see it was closed. Quite a few topics in this section have absolutely nothing to do with music and remain open. As a post reader, you always have the option to not read it. As an admin, you have to agree with livebaitman's interpretation of the rules. Is it arbitrary to delete a post about politics but allow posts about holidays and TV shows?
Of course you could argue I'm just being argumentative but I just reviewed the topics in this section and only 1/2 even relate to music.
Sorry...just my opinion (which my wife says isn't worth much and should be kept to myself!!)

How about Agile Les Paul copies? They get great reviews.

SAying that, after watching the news this morning I think lots of black/coloured whatever you decide to call people that are not white voted for Obama because of his colour. A few darl coloured folk on the news were saying We have got in, as in the colour of skin got in. This is very wrong if that is what most people done it for.

The same happened in the UK in 1979 with Thatcher. Loads upon loads voted for her just for the fact she was a woman and we had never had a woman Prime minister before. And just look what she done to the UK, more so what she had done to SCotland and its industry.

Ken, you're so right. Voting for someone because of the color of his skin is just so wrong. It's a shame that a good percentage of these 1st time voters cast their vote in complete ignorance. Obama was not my guy but he has touted change which is sorely needed. Now it's time to "walk the walk". As an American he has my complete support.
I just wanted to chime in and say how shameful it is for an African American voter to say "we got in"; would that be as acceptable had McCain won and a white person said the same? I think not. Increased voter turnout is a fantastic thing but not when the voters are completely uninformed. Their votes dilute democracy...
I get off my soap box now.

I use 2/3/4 now but was taught to use 1/2/3. For me 2/3/4 gives me a free finger to add C note (2nd string, 1st fret) for a little extra flavor. It's all about comfort each has it's advantages. Also as mentioned above, the switch to open C it lightning fast. I've found that I can't go back though so choose wisely. Once you get used to a certain way it's hard to change back!!1

Elixir Nanowebs for me... Light. But let your guitar dictate by what size it's set up for. I really have been happy with Elixir Nanos. They sound good and last longer. Unlike a lot of folks, I hate restringing my acoustics so longer life is better. I used to use Martin Marquis and still have some leftovers. If you're a newer player the Elixirs are kinder to your finger tips.

Has anyone else had trouble with Elixirs on electric guitars? I have them on my acoustic and like them a lot. When I put a set on a solidbody electric, I developed a grounding issue. Most electrics have the bridge tied in to the signal ground, which means the strings are at ground potential, to prevent shocks and stop noise. The coating on the Elixirs prevented the strings from making a good ground connection with my TOM bridge, so the guitar sounded really noisey through an amp. Switching to a noncoated string did the trick. Now I use DR pure nickle on my electrics with great results.

I haven't used them on an electric but what you're saying makes perfect sense. Are they the Nano or Polyweb version? Maybe going to the thinner (Nano I think) would help make your ground. I thought the electric strings were not coated all the way down to the ball????? Interesting...thanks for pointing that out.

I own an EG561C Takamine and I couldn't like it more. It plays as well as most anything I've played. Add Elixir lights and play for days.

I've been looking at the Agile 3000. Thanks for the info. everything that is written is very positive. Enough so to convince me not to buy the Epi as I was originally planning. Looks like an equeal or better model from Agile for about 40% less.

Brass pins will give you a different tone...whether it's better or not is up to the ear. I didn't really like them (too bright) so I went back to the cheap plastic ones. Personal preference

Thanks cytania...that's extremely helpful. As far as the shop's response to me checking it, the slightest bit of grief and I'm out. Ironically, my least favorite place, Guitar Center, seems to be the most tolerant of thoroughly checking out an item. I bought my last acoustic there because of this. I got to sit for an hour playing several with very little intervention. I finally settled on a G series Tack which is my fav. Thanks again, you info is exactly what I was looking for.

I've been an acoustic player for about 20 years and in my youth had a couple of electrics. I'm getting the itch to get an electric again. this was spurred by home recording and Line 6 pods (damn, this is gonna cost me!!). I've read up on various models and features. I've settled on getting 2, a Les Paul (or copy of) and a strat (or copy of). Question is, electronically, what should I check/ be aware of????? Obviously, I'll test all the pick ups but what are common problems associated with used guitars???? I'm approaching this like buying a used car, I want to avoid picking up something pretty that ends up being a piece of crap. Chances are I'll end up at a few music stores as I haven't found anything worth while and trust worthy in my general area. I do not gig and don't care what it looks like. I'm also not caught up in brand names. Any advice?

What sort of mic are you planning on buying? You can buy a PC mic that will plug directly into your sound card (or USB). These mics are short money and there are many posts dealing with the topic. If you want a dual purpose mic, one you could gig with as well as use for home recording, then you'll need to adapt that from phono plug (?) to 3.5 mm (the one that fits into your sound card). Hope that helps
