hi,

i have justed started playing in the last year on a guitar that was given to me.  I now want  to buy an acoustic 6 string.  I would like to stay under $500.00.  Should i be looking at getting a used guitar? My thought is that i could get a better guitar for less money.... or am i safer to purchase new?  Also, i have a read a few online buying guides but  i would like some advice on particular brands/models that are the best buy.  I don't know if there is such a thing as a guitar that's easier to play but that's what i want!   i have played a friends very expensive (way out of my budget) and i couldn't believe how much easier it was to play than the one i have been using.  I have learning on my own and online and this is just for fun but i would still like to get the best sound for my low budget.

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks,

Hi dbop and welcome to Chordie. Here's a link for you to browse through and see what tickles your fancy. They're all acoustic/electric guitars priced under $500.00. ( on the first 4 pages) The prices here on this site are some of lowest I've seen. If you should see a particular guitar that you really like, I'd print the add, take it to your local guitar/music store and see if they have guitar in stock/can get it for you if they don't/ and match or better the price from this site. More importantly, you'll get to play the guitar before you buy it!

Hi Old Doll,
Here's the tuning/replacing strings section of the melody harp;
**********************************
Replacing a broken string can be done at home.  Please read the instructions carefully and completely and think it through before attempting each step. You will  need the following tools:
Eye protection, needle-nosed pliers and wire cutters.
1.  Wear eye protection (this is important!) as you carefully pull the broken wire off the tuning pins with the pliers.

2.  Loosen the tuning pins three turns counter-clockwise (but not more!)  For all but the bottom wire, you will need to loosen two separate tuning pins.

3. Uncoil the replacement wire and slide either end one half inch through one of the tuning pin's hole. Note that the wire winding around the pin should be below the hole.

4.  Use needle-nosed pliers to bend the half inch of wire protruding from the hole upward.

5.  Keep the wire taut and turn the tuning pin clockwise three turns make sure the wire which winds around the pin ends up below the tuning pin hole.  Keeping the wire taut and below the tuning pin hole is very important.

6.  Loop the wire around both pegs on the left side of the Melody Harp.

7.  Slide the wire through the next pin's holes.  With your left hand, pull down on the wire four string's worth of slack (pull it down a distance of four times that which is between in tact strings.)
  The remainder of the wire will protrude from the hole. Remember that the wire must go around the pin in a clockwise fashion, and then through the hole.

8.  Turn the last tuning pin three turns clockwise (the slack will be taken up).  Keep the wire taut as you turn the pin.  Remember to keep the wire which winds around the pin below the tuning pin's hole.

9.  As soon as the wire will stay on the pin cut the excess wire from both pins (wear eye protection).  Cut as close to the edge of the tuning pin as possible. Be careful as the wire is quite sharp.
10.  Tune your Melody Harp.
The tuning is a "G Major" scale with F natural instead of F sharp.  From low to high strings, this scale consists of the notes  G, A, B,C, D,  E, F, and G.
**********************************

Good Luck, hope this is helpful....

There's no way of estimating the value of a guitar without seeing it up close. Many factors determine the value of an instrument( condition,serial # visibility, modifications, etc).
Here is a site that will tell a person the exact year their instrument was made based on serial numbers and brand.

Hello DsD & welcome to Chordie. Here's a site that gives tons of chords for A, D, and F tuning on the Uke. It very user friendly and well made. Hope you get some use from this fine site;

zenbutcher,
  I've been playing music in front of various groups of people for over 2/3rds of my physical life in this universe. It's 100% normal to be nervous, if you're not nervous then you don't care. You obviously care about the quality of your perfromance. Commit yourself to the version of the song you wish to play and play said song as many times as it takes for you to feel comfortable with it. And realize that all of us musicians are 10 times better playing at home alone than we are playing in front of others(haha). After a few good strums on your guitar the power and majestical force of music will guide you, no matter where you are, and you'll be just fine..........

Hi Ken,
  You know just as well as I that some people say things, totally unsubstantiated, simply to be condescending, disdainful, or overbearing. In every nook and cranny of the universe there's always gonna be "THAT" person. I know you know where I'm coming from. Don't let the jealous simpletons darken your day. I've seen your stuff on youtube and in my opinion, it's all first rate stuff!

-Also, I enjoy sporting a tutu, heavy facial make-up, ballerina slippers and going  to biker ( Harley Davidson) shows . I have a really pretty, sparkly wand in hand and I  run around singing" I am the Harley fairy, who cares if my legs are hairy?!!!" This can be very  interesting at times ( I often get to practice my Mixed Martial Arts while doing this). ( shush!, my wife doesn't know about this one!!!)

-Next,I like to sample perfumes in the mall to see which one makes me sneeze the loudest and hardest. The pretty girls in the long white jackets rarely think my actions are funny and/or amusing.............My wifes' ears turn red when I do this( this means she's mad)

From time to time, I'll go to fancy restaurants and ask 'em how much they charge for Mad Dog 20-20, or Boonesfarm Strawberry Farm wine. Or what kind of ketchup they have to pour over the filet-mignon( and pronounce it  'fill-et  mig-non'). My wifes' ears turn red every time I do this.( this means she's really mad!)

Proudly, I like to give homeless people money whenever I have a little extra.( only if they don't ask) ( My wife smiles at me when I do this...)

Once in a while,  I go to the grocery store and the person baggin' my groceries asks 'plastic or paper sir?', I enjoy replying, "plasper", or "paystic".( My wife refuses to go to the grocery store with me anymore)

Finally, I enjoy charting how long it takes to see spots and bright lights while holding my breath. My record is 1minute 40 seconds.( My wife tells me to be sure to pay my life insurance bills!!)

Thanks, because I want don't care about plugging it into my computer, I want a pedal to plug into my amp and use.  I'll look elsewhere.  Thanks though!

You might want to consider taking a trip to your local "main stream" music store( i.e. Guitar Centre, Sam Ash, 123 Music, etc) and try out the different stomp pedals. Eac store usually has a "tree" of pedals set up and ready to try out. They'll usually have Boss ( my personal fav.) DigiTech, and DOD. They're all excellent pedals and comes down to personal preference.

  Jot down the pedals you like and research their prices on-line. Print out a copy of the lowest price on your 'fancy-tickin'' pedals, take 'em back to the store and give your local business' a chance to match the best on-line price you locate. I always use this 'penny-pinchin'' technique when i make a purchase. They can say yes or they can can say no............

These PODDY thingies are great if one has an unlimited amount of time to get the exact sound  one wishes to produce.(i.e., home recording) They can be, however, a real thorn in ones'side while  performing live. Numerous times I've witnessed guitar players spend more time adjusting their '1,000 sounds in a box' gadgets than actually playing music. When performing live it is very important that one is familiar with their tools and have a back-up plan if something goes wrong( with a gadget that does 1,000 things there are 1,000 things that could potentially go wrong). I like to keep it simple when playing live. Know the sounds and settings  that put a quiver in yer liver (make you happy) and stick with 'em........

I was working at my desk yesterday when my three year old came into the office and started running a pickle (she calls picks pickles) across my guitar's strings.  She ran it mid-way up the neck.  She ran it right over the sound hole.  She ran it way down by the bridge.  They sounded different every time.  What a revelation for me!  I have always just figured you strum or pick over the sound hole and that was that.  Getting different tones from different spots is COOL!

This is the problem with teaching myself.  It takes a three year old goofing around before I learn anything.

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained." If you watch Stevie Ray Vaughan, he used the technique your young'un' uses. I think you have created  a natural musician with a brilliant mind.

  My 3 year old just recently accidentally broke one my 'practice guitars' and tried, very cleverly,  to hide the damage with a wrist band( the guitars' neck was snapped in a perfect upsidedown u-shape just behind the nut, in a horrific oops I tripped accident! ) I laughed for a half an hour with my wife outside the house. We then returned  back inside and tried with all of  our might to refrain from laughing at each other while stressing to the little man that Daddy's guitars are off limits! No major loss, it was only a $30 guitar but the point needed to be made. Oh, and by the way, the 'nice' guitars are way up high on the wall!!!..............

Hi Guitarpix,
How's life treatin' you? Grand I hope.......

I fell short of 25 song goal due to some unexpected gig loss-age. I got off to a good start in my 'home alone' experience but ended up devoting gobs of time searching for some new venues that were willing to pay a little bit of cha-ching. Here are few new tunes(to me) that are in my song family;

Heart of the Night by Poco
Beginnings by Chicago (when I'm with you-ho-ho)
Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran (acoustified)
On and On by Stephen Bishop
Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett/Steve Cropper
Share The Land by the Guess Who
Smokey Mountain Rain by Ronnie Milsap( punked out)
I Ain't Mad at Cha by Tupac Shakur ( still in the lab on this one)
When I'm Gone by 3 Doors Down
Beautiful Boy by John Lennon
I'm Not Over by Carolina Liar
Sittin' At A Bar by Rehab ( still in the lab)
All Summer Long by Kid Rock (Warren Zevon, Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Hold The Line by Toto (still in the lab)

I play to a wide variety of crowds from night to night so I try to know a little bit of everything( that won't get me fired ) to at least spark a tiny bit of interest from as many people as I can.

Busking is the same as playin' for tips on the street . In areas that are  not regulated by public officials, respect and seniority is the rule of thumb. You don't ever want to 'invade' an area previously occupied by another musician, unless you're willing to have your instument yanked from your hands and smashed over your head. In other words, know the territory and play by the rules, or else!!!!!!

Yeah I've heard this too ( furniture polish, very bad).  I've always used a lint free cloth and 'elbow grease' to clean my guitars. I actually give a spit  on the guitar to speed the cleaning process, turn the cloth over and complete the cleaning/drying. I'll use q-tips and a little alcohol to clean the grit away from the frets. The lint free cloth is very important . Cloth balls wrapped around the guitar strings really can alter the string volume output and they're a real booger to remove.

Okay so,

I'm a fairly new guitar player but resently I've had problems with my amp connection. I find it will cut off and on randomly as i play. I dont know if its my guitar or my amp, I'm not really guitar savy. It would be great if someone could help me out. smile Thanks

Hello klt_is08 and welcome to Chordie. Your problem could be a number of things;
-you may need to replace your guitar cable(cord)
-you may need to clean the contact points inside the plug on your guitar and/or inside the input on your amp
-your power sources (power cord from amp, plug-in source, ie power strip, extention cord, etc) may need replacing
-there could be some wiring inside of your guitar that is about to  come undone or is shorting out. If your plug in source on the guitar is loose, the wiring from the plug will 'twist' each time you plug in/unplug. After too many 'twists' the wire will break.

I always like to begin my troubleshooting from the guitar and work my have from there. (guitar, cable, amp, main power source)

Good Luck Resolving Your Problem,

Hi Guitarpix,
  Nice to have you back. I played at my Grandmothers funeral many years back. It was by far my most difficult public performance. It's extremely hard to sing with that 'sad-knot' in your throat ( lots of deep breaths help a little). I offer you my sincere condolences. Best of luck.
