Hey, Will, I remember giving you a hard time before. Welcome back. I like Oasis but I also like Blur. Does that make me slightly schizo? I never understood the rivalry between the two bands, other that getting into the papers.

I seem to remember you boasting at having the fastest right hand in the UK. I hope you're past that phase now. The image has haunted me all this time wink

As I say, welcome back, this place might just liven up a bit in the next wee while.

I'd go for as much as is possible without getting fret buzz or putting the intonation out.

Although in saying that I wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

All the best and welcome to Chordie.

or more simply

Flat picking is just picking with a pick (plectrum).

Hi there, Tekaran,

Go here http://www.justinguitar.com/en/TE-000-Technique.php and scroll right down to the bottom of the page. There are 2 video lessons on finger picking technique. They are both folk styles but there are some great tips on how to start thinking about finger picking.

I have to admit to being really bad at finger picking, but everyone is different. I prefer to flat pick but my brother-in-law, who is quite an accomplished semi-pro, can't flat pick to save his life but is a demon finger picker.

Have a go. I've been tying for ages and still suck. More practice and longer finger nails is what I need.

All the very best.

Can't rate justinguitar.com high enough.

Try picking a song from one of your most hated bands and doing an acoustic cover of one of their songs. Can be a very cool experience.

OK that just loosened something in my brain. You can see the relationship between these chords when you see how they are made up. I had a wee look at a chord building grid to check it out. You can find one here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_building_grid
After a bid of a nose bleed I started to see what daddy from denmark means. Amazing.

I've been looking online for some songbooks recently and if I do a search (say on ebay), guitar songbook usually gets me the best results.

Makes you wonder if that's how Van Gogh lost an ear!

Careful, James.

One of the main reasons you see guitarists changing guitars during a performance is for this reason. Some folk artists may use 4 or 5 different guitars during a show because each one is tuned differently. I always thought it was just so they could show off how many guitars they had but now I can see the reason behind it.

Sounds like you are doing ok. There are a lot of self taught players on here (me too). The internet certainly has made it easier to teach yourself. I wish it'd been around 25 years ago - I might not have given up for 23 years or so. Check out www.justinguitar.com there are a loads of great excercises and videos on there. All free! From tuning and changing strings to song lessons and scales. Very cool.

There are times when you do get cheesed off but take a break, chill out and usually when you pick up again something clicks. Keep going, the bit you are at at the moment is the hardest bit.

Until the next bit.... lol

Thanks everyone.

Really wierd Oldnewbie; after Rewind I went straight into Sweet Home Alabama yikes

Doll - Jack Johnson has kinda passed me by. One of those guys I keep meaning to check out. I think I really must. And, man of the cloth? I think my cloth is a bit threadbare and still a work in progress.

NELA - Yup. Love those blues. Usually in the key of E (I think).

Now, geoaguiar, you have intrigued me with I Will Survive. Could be interesting. This is a song that a LOT of women sing in Scotland when they've had a bit too much to drink lol

Thanks again.

Aromatherapy for roses? I thought that was just a big pile o horse manure round the rose bed.

Shows how much I know.

I have a cut-a-way on my Yamaha. As jaygordon75 says the main difference I find is the volume. I also don't use the cut-a-way at the moment but who knows, in the future as my technical knowlege and ability increases (i hope)... And hey, it looks cool.

Good calls.

Try the public books from the top menu bar. They are full of inspiration. I have a wee browse through them quite often - chordie is such a huge index you can miss a lot. Having a look through other people's songbooks always brings a new treat or forgotten classic.

You'll love it here.

Candles may be a good idea. I have just spent the past hour installing new ceiling lamps in the living room. With my track record in Home Improvement candles might be required when the lights blow out.

I thought I'd surprise my wife this year. In the 25 years I've known her I have never given her a gift on St Valentines Day. Well, apart from the first year. This has never bothered her since she doesn't bother with it herself.

So I thought I'd surprise her. Just to let her know I really don't take our love for granted (getting soppier with age). So I ordered a single red rose along with card and bottle of red wine online and arranged for it to be delivered to her work.

She phoned me this morning (Valentines Day) telling me she'd had a phone call from her work, telling her she had flowers, wine and card delivered. She then informed me she was attending a seminar today and wouldn't be going to work as normal, and now it meant that instead of making her way straight home early, she would now have to detour back to work to pick up the symbols of my undying, infinite love and then make her way home, carrying this burden of my affection on public transport.

Love hurts....

Never again. lol
