As strange as it sounds you can actually get a crisper, fuller distortion sound by simply turning the gain(distortion) down and turning the volume up. If you have your gain at 100% and your volume at 20%, you're gonna get an irritating, skinny, little buzzing noise, like a gnat flying around your ear. Try backing off of the gain to around 40-60% and pump up your volume to around the same(40-60%). I betcha you're gonna like the tone. Give it a try..........

Thanks for the kind words Steve. It wouldn't take much practice for you not only to 'play during my breaks'. Careful not to practice too much, the owners might can me and hire you! It was a pleasure meeting you, your lovely wife, and your charming, talented daughter. It's cool to put faces with posts here on Chordie. Meeting you and your family was the highlight of my evening. Let me know when you're gonna be down here and I'll secure a 'righty' guitar or two for you and your daughter to 'strut yer stuff'!!!

Nice words Phill and well said. Perhaps we'd all be better off with no religion at all. The majority of all worldwide conflict seems to stem from religious beliefs and the inability of most to realize that there are differences of personal interpretations onto each others theological path.

My dream, for over 20 years was to own a Gibson J-45. I could not justify to myself, or more imprortantly to my wife, spending more than one weeks' pay(from playing music exclusively) on an instrument . When I , and the $books finally proved to my boss(wife) that I  had accomplished my goal for one quarter of the ficsal year, {12 conscecutive weeks} just before x-mas, and her finding out that she was pregnant with our son, she 'bought' me my/our dream guitar .  I was not dissapointed. This guitar is the finest instrument my hands have ever touched. If a fire broke out in our home I'd remove our J-45 pronto, after the wife, kids, and dog were safely exited form the the inferno. Many people have negative things to say about Gibson guitars. I'm not one of them.

You'd get a better response if you'd list where you searched to find your desired song. We all have our own secret fishin'spots that we dip our 'learning rods' into, figuratively speaking of course. Narrow the search process, let it be known where you've looked, and we'll have a foundation on which we can start to help you seek your specific song.............

My dad got me some dunlop slides for christmas, one glass, one bronze, one chrome. I want to start learning to play this style... I'm assuming the best way is to tune it to open E, which I did like this:

E
B
G#
E
B
E

I've been playing 'In My Time of Dying" by Led Zep., and I have 'She Talks to Angels' by the Black Crowes... What are some fairly simple songs to learn that use slide in open tunings?? ALSO, anything if there's anything important I need to know, or even tips for a beginner anyone knows/has, I'd appreciate the advice.
Merry Christmas,

Perhaps the most important element of playing slide is string control. Begin playing one string at a time while muting the other 5, then play 2 strings together, (E&B, B&G, G&D ), then 3 strings, etc..,

STRING CONTROL=crucial!!!.

Really focus on controlling the strings that your are not playing. Muting, or string control can be done with the palm of your strumming/picking hand and/or with the fingers not in use on your 'slide' hand. It's kinda hard to descibe verbally(or typed) but you seem to have music in your soul. This will guide you, it's a 'feel' thing, but here's some general info to help you find the 'feel'. Also, it'd be greatly helpful to sit down, face to face, with a seasoned slide player and pay 'em a little money( or at least offer some $, the general rate for a 1/2 hour guitar lesson is $20-$35) for a few 'pointer sessions'.

My son received his very own mic stand, 20' instrument cable(he kept borrowing Dads'!),a  IPOD kids boom box loaded with lots of Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, with lots of  his favorite Steve Vai, and the following DVD's;

Queen-Live at Wembley
a film about Jimi Hendrix( sitting on a stool playing a 12 string)
Ozzy Osbourne- Live at Budokan
Bruce Springsteen- In Concert MTV Plugged

And Dad received;
The Grateful Dead Movie
The Allman Brothers Band- Live at the Beacon Theatre
Once( Soundtrack DVD)

Our music DVD's are our 'cartoons'. My kid would rather watch live music DVD's than Scooby Doo, Sponge Bob, and all the other cartoons out today. Lucky for me! (and him)

Hey Cam,
I own this amp and love it! Lots of cool sounds to play around with that are easily accessable. Sounds good at low and high volume (of course all music sounds better loud!) I had a big ole 2x12 Marshall 50watt amp and sold it after I got this little Vox. Give it a spin.

Hi James,
This is perhaps the coolest story, and wittiest delivery of song that I've personally seen regarding gettin' the pants off of a desired target!(haha) This is the stuff I think John Prine would've evolved to if he 'stayed in school'. Thanks SP,

Same gauge strings, all in correct place. But now a slight fret buzz. Very annoying. Most folk don't notice  but I can hear it like a band saw. I'll get myself some decent quality strings and see if it helps. If not then I'm concerned.

I've used 11's on it since I bought it, although it had 12's on when I got it (about a year and a half ago), which I changed within days. Should I go back to 12's?

I think if you've played with 11's for 1 1/2 years you'll be ok stayin' with 'em. I'll bet new strings will solve your problem, but if not....

Take a good close look at your frets ( 1-5 ) and see if there are deep grooves in the frets. As the grooves deepen the string (s) become closer to the frets further up the fretboard, thus causing fret buzzing. You might need a fret job. The guy that does all of my guitar does partial fret replacements( replaces only the ones that need replacing). Most of the big named music stores won't do this. It's all or nothing with them and that's B.S.. Call around and find someone who'll replace the bad ones only.

If the frets look ok then have a look at the nut ( too deep=buzz). Or have a look at the saddle in the bridge and make sure there are no cracks or deep grooves. I stop at this point and take my instruments to my repair guy. Precision is crucial in nut, bridge, and/or saddle repair.

How often, and how many hours per day do you play this guitar?

This year (2008) marks the 50th anniverary of the PEACE SIGN.

"The peace sign first appeared in 1958. Originally designed as the emblem for the British nuclear disarmament movement, it soon spread to America, where it was put to use by antiwar activists. Before it was a dozen years old, the PEACE SIGN had become an international symbol for PEACE, LOVE, and COUNTERCULTURE VALUES."

Hi Al V,
If the replacement strings you're using are considerably thinner than the  replaced strings, buzzing can and sometimes will occur. A G string placed in a D string locale will buzz because it's made to be strung at a higher tension. The quality of the strings though shouldn't effect the set-up schematics,( ie fret buzz) but the tone of your instrument will be lacking and life of the string will be reduced.

Call me old fashioned, or stubborn, but when playing live, I'd never use a sound that isn't  produced live, on site, by a human. But in the studio, click tracks are a huge asset to the person(s) paying for time. The click tracks are indeed a source of artistic intereference, but when money is being dished out, the pros outweigh the cons. It is, however, crucial that the click track be removed from the final mix................

Can you get Duff strings? Ave replaced the strings on my acoustic with Martin SP 12s and i dont like the sound of them, they sound dead, dull,?
any comments plz
also apart from being easier to play and on the fingers what difference would you get changing to let say 10,s ?
Am thinking of lightening up the strings, so advice before i buy i think

Regards Micky

Hi Mickey,
Yes you can get duff strings. If the string have not been stored in a climate controlled environment, they will age in the packaging. Over exposure to sunlight will rag 'em out too. It'd be worth a try at least to ask for a replacement set where you bought 'em.

Also, if you're planning on switching from 12's to 10's you may experience severe difficultly in keeping the guitar in tune. By going from 12's to 10's you're gonna 'shock' the wood and it'll react to lighter tension. It's best to gradually switch the string guage to best reduce this 'wood shock' process. If you're set on switching, I'd go to 11's first. Or maybe you keep the 12's on and tune down a 1/2 a step or even a full step and capo the first or second fret. Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

I with upyerkilt on cooking with fresh herbs/spices. I'll have to add fresh veggies to the list as well. There's just no substitute for these aforementioned items in a well cooked meal.

When my wife and I first met, everything she cooked was straight out of the box, and mostly all yellow(or one color). I turned her on to some quality cooking shows and being the fast learner that she is, she now cooks almost as good as me. (haha) Just kidding, she's the main chef, I'm her assistant now.
I approach cooking similarly to the way I approach music(performing). Fresh herbs/spices/vegetables(= quality instruments), decent quality meats with proper seasoning(= amps and effects), watched lots of cooking shows to enhance kitchen skills(=practicing guitar, piano, percussion, harmonica, and voice). Add all of these elements together and more times than not ,the food on the plate is a sucess with the entire family!

Badeye, I used your 'short order' joke at my gig last night. Some smarty pants replied, 'they'd uh let you cook on your knees!?' I guess the local loony ben had a field trip last night!?!?...............haha
