The other side of the coin here. I tried a few Tanglewoods when I was buying a new guitar about a year ago and didn't like any of them. Maybe it was the way they were presented in the shops.

But I would definately get it set up professionally if you're worried about it. Check out this post by moddish http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7217

Strung Out Guitars website is here http://www.strungoutguitars.com/oscommerce/index.php

They're in the Merchant City area of the town (Glasgow). Seems they do a fantastic job.

Been playing about 2 years (since I started over again after 15 year or so lay off). It was hard picking it up again but fun. Once I finally managed to put 2 or 3 chords together without getting buzzes and other funny noises it has been steady (slow) progress to a point where I am now better than I was in my late teens and  twenties (when I gave up). I have NEARLY got confident with barre chords, I can play most but not all well, and if I have the chords and words in front of me can play, probably simple versions, of almost anything. I really struggle to transcribe songs by ear but can get there if given lots and lots of time. Finger picking is beyond me, other than at it's most basic,  and I find a flat pick (plectrum) more comfortable.

I love a good sing-a-long with friends and family but most of all I just love guitar.

I'm sure the brilliant Billy Bragg will have something to say (sing) on the matter.

lol lol lol

A band which I discovered more recentely are Everclear. I came to them very late, maybe 5 years ago or so. I'd never heard of them until they were mentioned quite often in a Christopher Brookmyre (fine Scottish writer and St Mirren supporter) novel I was reading. I checked them out and loved them, and then went on an ebay and amazon crusade buying the cd's (and there are plenty).

How's that evsynator? Back on track. wink

And Al, did you know Dave Sharp is playing an Alarm set on the 18th of this month in Rockers up the town. He has got a band together to do this. I am led to believe it is songs from Alarm albums that Teh alarm today would not normally do. The red eyes are supporting them. £10 to get in the door.
I still dont know if I am going
and sorry to highjack this thread a bit lol

Ken

Yeah! I heard that too. I still like Sharpy, he's alway been a bit like the weird kid everyone avoids. Great guitarist and a helluva song-writer. In saying all that - I doubt if I'll be there to see it. Sounds great though. There's a wee bit about the gig on his website which you can read here http://www.davesharp.org/news.asp#Nw141

Good to hear that him and Mike are mellowing to each other again.

And I'm also sorry for hi-jacking this thread.

OK for a laugh. Greatest Song in the World is pure genius.

1st band I really got into was Iron Maiden about '80/'81. I loved all that heavy metal stuff bit Maiden were IT for me. A couple of years later I heard a band called The Alarm and was blown away. Mike Peters was the man who inspired me to play, especially second time around ( I re-started about 2 years ago after a 15 year lay off). The Alarm - Best rock band in the world!

Just out of interest, what do you guys use to record? I only have a small PC mic and it tends to sound pretty naff. Or maybe that's just me.

Without wanting to put a damper on this, I think you'd better be very careful what you say here, Doc. If anything not to his liking gets back to Mr Grohl, there could be trouble.

There are a few topics on here that are, if I'm being honest, just way over my head. Comparing different guitars or materials on some models, or even makes I've never heard of. Best not to venture into these things when I am totally clueless on the subject matter. Some of these post, I'll admit, have sent me off to look into whatever models or materials are being discussed. But I'm still clueless at the end of it. I've only ever played a handful of guitars in my life, and none of them very expensive.

So what these posts have done for me is open the door into the land behind the wardrobe, filled with magical, sickeningly expensive guitars, and left me looking and drooling at things 'll never touch.

Just because there are no replies to a topic doesn't mean it hasn't had an effect.

Still here. Still an inspiration.

I've been on holiday for a while and was sitting feeling sorry for myself at the thought of returning to work tomorrow. How small do I feel right now, that that was getting me down?

I truly wish for your health to improve. You've shown me up for the self-involved, short-sighted idiot that I am, and I thank you for that.

God bless you, Doc! Keep inspiring.

Hi Zucko,

Welcome to Chordie. Here is the cheapest way I know to tune your guitar, go to: http://www.get-tuned.com/guitar_tuner.php and you can tune your guitar for free.

I hope it helps,

Roger

Yeah, I used to use one similar to that online. But you can't always carry the internet with you.

I've never regretted buying a tuner. In fact I bought a guitar with an on-board tuner. Best idea ever!

Maybe one day they'll invent self tuning strings. On that same day I'll grow another 2 fingers and be able to sing like Pavarotti.

Get yourself a tuner. You'll be able to find one on eBay for under a tenner. Cost you about the same at your local music store.

You will be happier smile

The numbers are set on to lines. The lines represent the strings, the numbers represent the fret at which the string is played. So, as it reads from left to right, if you put a piece of paper (for demonstration only) perpendicular to the strings (lines) you'll see that each number comes slightly after the one before. This is the order in which each note is played. if the numbers are all in line then they are played at the same time.

So playing each note in an open G chord, slowly, would look like:

---------------3--          The top line is the 1st string (e), the bottom the 6th (E)
-------------0----
-----------0------
--------0---------
-----2------------
---3--------------

Playing it as a normal chord played at a quick strum would look like:

---3-------                  Hope this helps.
---0-------
---0-------
---0-------
---2-------
---3-------

Oh, and welcome to Chordie.

Jeez, badeye, sad news. I know how it feels to lose a friend. Watch out for the quiet times, they kinda sneak up and hammer you. Sympathies to everyone involved.

Jam on, as you say. On to life's next caper. All the very best.
