I never tried ELIXIR strings, everyone tells, in their comments that Elixir strings ARE the best strings, and in particular NANOWEB strings
About the price: a package of Elixir strings = 27€ = 41$ YES 41$!!!
On EBAY you pay 55$ for SIX packages of 6 acoustic strings (0.10....) extralight

Here in Ireland, 21EUR, about 26USD at today's rate. 3 times the price of normal strings, I hope they are 3 times as good!

Try 'em Doc. I've never used the polys only the nano's. I have heard the polys are slippery. IMHO worth the extra money.

Thanks for that. That's great stuff. Another example of how shameful it is that so many great singer songwriters remain unheard of and unsigned with all the horrid acts in record stores.....

Except the B chord, of course.  The B chord is sinister in and of itself.

I'll second that. B has and always will suck in it's official form no matter what Russell Harding may say....Again B bar on 2-4 frets sucks. I play it on 7. Or use 2 fingers and mute the high E on 2-4

I also have been using them for a few years. They sound new longer. 30 bucks? I order them on line in multipacks. I think the price in qty is much less (around 15.00 or so).

thanx for the info--
I scooped out the mids, cranked the bass, and torked the treble to 7 ish, Jim, added in your sugestion and it's a pretty solid tone...I cranked it up pretty good and I got the "there are other people in the house!" from my lovely wife...guess she doesn't appreciate my new signature sound.

I have the same problem...I always threaten her with "you won't be allowed to be a groupie". It never works but makes her laugh.

You will find that the Elixirs will sound new longer. I've been using them for years and they seem to last 3 to 4 times longer.

Thanks geoaguiar. I play mostly for my own entertainment, and sometimes with a few friends. No professionsls here! Thank you for the welcome AccoustikNoyz. I have heard some good things about the Roland AC-60, and the Marshall AS 50D. Anyone care to comment?  As an aside, I think the Chordie community is fantastic. I found it by accident, when I was linked to the site from another one. The closeness, humor, and affection from everyone on this web-site is unsurpassed. I hope to contribute to it in my own small way whenever possible.

You are very welcome. I own a small Crate CA10 Acoustic Amp for practice (it's in my very small office in the basement). It's adequate and costs less than $100.00. Unless you're gigging I don't see a need for anything more. I think Doug Smith said it in another post "I suspect most people are "over amped"". I agree with him

Well, that sounds like what I have in mind is certainly possible. LOL Anyone have any opinions on the Squier by Fender Standard Stratacasters as a beginning guitar? Something that'll last me for a few years? I won't outgrow it?

There are lots of choices out there. No matter what you buy if it takes hold of you, you're going to buy more. It's just that way. For short money the Agile and SX lines are hard to beat in my opinion. Rondo music would be a good site to start with. Also give your local music shop a chance; they deserve at least that!!!! Don't rule out buying used from your local music shop. There are a lot of great deals out there. I've known people who have tried to take it up and start with a 2000.00 Taylor only to give it up after a couple of months. Those great guitars from not so great players are out there!!! Don't stress out about your first choice in guitar. If you get into it you'll get plenty more as the years roll on. I still have my first guitar and still play it regularly. It was 200.00 late in the 80's and is still worth about 200.00!!!!!

There is a difference between the 2. You can clearly hear it even with low end equipment. If you're serious about playing you'll need 2. If you're just playing around, you can just use 1. It depends on your needs. Acoustic amps are generally very simple, amps designed for electrics tend to have more features but again if you're just playing around for fun...

Here's a post I read on another forum that may help (credit to ljguitar on the AGF). I've also read that your guitar must be purchased from a pawn shop in order to get the proper blues tone.

How To Play And Sing The Blues

    * Most Blues begin with: "Woke up this morning..."
    * "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the Blues unless you stick something nasty in the next line like "I got a good woman with the meanest face in town."
    * The Blues is simple.
    * After you get the first line right, repeat it.
    * Then find something that rhymes, sort of: "Got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Yes, I got a good woman with the meanest face in town. Got teeth like Margaret Thatcher, and she weighs 500 pounds."
    * The Blues is not about choice. You're stuck in a ditch, you're stuck in a ditch. There ain't no way out.
    * Blues cars: Chevys, Fords, Cadillacs and broken-down trucks. Blues don't travel in Volvos, BMWs, or SUVs. Most Blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train.
    * Jet aircraft and state-sponsored motor pools ain't even in the running.
    * Walkin' plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does fixin' to die.
    * Teenagers and kids can't sing the Blues. They ain't fixin' to die yet. Adults sing the Blues. In Blues, "adulthood" means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.
    * Blues can take place in New York City but not in Hawaii or anyplace in Canada. Hard times in Minneapolis or Seattle is probably just clinical depression. Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City are still great places to have the Blues.
    * You cannot have the blues anyplace that don't get rain.
    * A man with male pattern baldness ain't the Blues. A woman with male pattern baldness is. Breaking your leg 'cause you were skiing is not the blues. Breaking your leg 'cause a alligator is chomping on it is.
    * You can't have no Blues in an office or a shopping mall. The lighting is wrong. Go out to the parking lot or sit by the dumpster.

Good places for the Blues:

   1. highway
   2. jailhouse
   3. empty bed
   4. bottom of a whiskey glass

Bad places for the Blues:

   1. Nordstrom's
   2. gallery openings
   3. Ivy League colleges
   4. golf courses

No one will believe it's the Blues if you wear a suit, 'less you happen to be an old ethnic person, and you slept in it.

Do you have the right to sing the Blues?
Yes, if:

   1. you're older than dirt
   2. you're blind
   3. you shot a man in Memphis
   4. you can't be satisfied

No, if:

   1. you have all your teeth
   2. you were once blind but now can see
   3. the man in Memphis lived
   4. you have a 401K or trust fund

Blues is not a matter of color. It's a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot sing the blues. Sonny Liston could. Ugly white people also got a leg up on the blues.

If you ask for water and your darlin' give you gasoline, it's the Blues.
Other acceptable Blues beverages are:

   1. cheap wine
   2. whiskey or bourbon
   3. muddy water
   4. nasty black coffee

   1. The following are NOT Blues beverages:
   2. Perrier
   3. Chardonnay
   4. Snapple
   5. Slim Fast

If death occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a Blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is another Blues way to die. So are the electric chair, substance abuse and dying lonely on a broken-down cot.

You can't have a Blues death if you die during a tennis match or while getting liposuction.

Some Blues names for women:

   1. Sadie
   2. Big Mama
   3. Bessie
   4. Fat River Dumpling

17. Some Blues names for men:

   1. Joe
   2. Willie
   3. Little Willie
   4. Big Willie

Persons with names like Amber, Jennifer, Tiffany, Debbie, and Heather can't sing the Blues no matter how many men they shoot in Memphis.

Make your own Blues name Starter Kit:

   1. name of physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Lame, etc.)
   2. first name (see above) plus name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, etc..)
   3. last name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.)

Examples: Blind Lime Jefferson, Jackleg Lemon Johnson.

Bravo.....this is the capsulized definitive guide to the Blues. I laughed all the way through. Well done!!1

If I were those guys, I'd consider replacing that metronome. They are not being very eco-friendly....what a riot. That tractor keeps better time than I do!!!

I own that mic in both USB and phantom power versions. I've been satisfied. I bought both at a pretty competitive price. If you're planning on embarking on this addictive endeavor, you'll eventually want a USB or firewire audio interface (I got a Tascam US-144). If this is the case, I wouldn't bother with the USB powered version of the mic. The only time I use the USB mic is if I travel. Just my experience. All your equipment will feed into the interface and switching your recording software back to look at the USB (instead of the interface) for just the mic can be annoying. Look for on line deals with shock mounts, cases etc.

I'm going with 'Zona ... I'm an Eagles fan and was ticked off once again by their performance in the title game ... same as always, play like crap for 3 quarters, dig yourself a whole, then come back to take the lead and then blow it in the last 7-8 minutes ... BUT I do like the 'Zona Cinderella story so I'm going with the Cards ... if they lose that's fine, the team deserved to experience the Super Bowl after the way they played in the post season

I admire your courage in openly admitting you're an Eagles fan....Kudos to you. Admitting it is the first step to recovery. How many more heartbreaking lossses can 1 fan base endure. I feel your pain.

Those without a good grasp of theory are destined to wallow in mediocrity. Learning why instead of just when to play a note will open doors that trial and error or copying others cannot. Just my opinion. There are some natural born players out there to whom it just makes sense when they pick it up.

Arm to belt loop or belt itself. Another option is the armrest inside. As far as what music selection goes: ask him what he likes and try to play the opposite. Really loud Barry Manilow seems like a good choice...

I don't see the point. Can you express yourself and do you enjoy playing? This is the only factor. I would much rather listen to a player like BB King , David Gilmour or Neil Young than Malmsteen, Steve Via or Joe Satriani. But technically speaking Malmsteen might be light years ahead of Neil Young from a technical standpoint. Play both their records; whose song moves you the most? My answer would be Neil Young, yours might be Steve Vai.

The point is who cares. This is subjective and always has been. Besides, anyone at any level can contribute. You don't have to be a great guitarist to be a great musician. I picked up the guitar 20 something years ago to make music not impress people or approach playing from a scientific view. Playing guitar is about having fun and more importantly MAKING MUSIC. I don't care who's technically better.
Music comes from somewhere other than "look, I can make a B chord and you can't therefore I'm better". Sorry IMHO this has no bearing
