Topic: DEEP BLACK ZEPPELIN (6 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Well the title tells us more than enough but IS THE FOLLOWING THEORY ACCEPTABLE?
- LED ZEPPELIN
- BLACK SABBATH (WITH OZZIE)
- DEEP PURPLE
Are they truly the godfathers of hard rock and heavy metal ? Or am I wrong. I mean there is something wrong about that theory.
I have the feeling that there is a kind of MISSING LINK. STILL in the PERIOD end 60ties early 70ties
I quote: Hard rock is strongly influenced by blues music. The most frequently used scale in hard rock is the pentatonic, which is a typical blues scale but they "tuned it up" by playing it 2-3 times faster than blues and the classic rock and roll.
Fact 1 = we can say: BLUES ==> ROCK AND ROLL ==> HARDROCK ==> HEAVY METAL, because during the 70ties hardrock inspired another style known as heavy metal.
Fact 2 = Deep purple's album, Machine Head, is considered by a lot as one of the first heavy metal albums.
Don't forget DEF LEPPARD. There seem to be only 5 bands who sold more than 10.000.000 copies of an album in the USA. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Van Halen and Led Zeppelin are the other four.
I expected the Rolling Stones too, but we speak here of 1 album.
Can you please help me with this thread, I have a writer's block.

Thanks for all your answers, very nice and clean and just as I wanted it NO CONTEST.
Colluege Ape, I agree but they ARE Hendrix songs. I adore his version of Dylan's all along the watchtower and little wing.
SRV also plays little wing.
I forgot to mention 1 important thing = time line = 15 years approximately. AND SRV wasn't a THEATRICAL player like Jimi. I am NOT IN A POSITION TO JUDGE. I can only tell you that there is still a lot of talent and VERY almost extra terrestrial players, who often are talented but they play just to play and are at the University to study for MD or Lawyer. When I was in MEMPHIS, in BEAL STREET, you have a club named the BB KING CLUB. We were on our way to the motel, and I passed that club, what I heard there was amazing. I saw, standing outside the club a band and he played VOODOO CHILE, you couldn't hear the difference, also SUSIE Q 10X better than CCR'S version and when we left (I had too much pain) he started playing "I'm Going Home" (how could he notice that I was going home)

Topic: 3 man bands HOW DO THEY DO IT? (15 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Same question but how do a mot of these bands manage it?
WHO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR HERE? Of course you need a very SOLID RHYTHM SECTION but some of these guys like CLAPTON, HENDRIX even ALVIN LEE (I don't include the keyboards, you almost can't hear them) to play as if they were playing with at least with 2-3 guitars, there is 1 song I always loved: I'm going home by TYA = Alvin Lee. How does he do it playing that way, all together, solo and riffs at the same time
I admire a lot the 3 man band, 1 guitar player and 1 bass and 1 drum.
The rhythm section is or has to be really good, like
- The CREAM: If you hear songs from them you can't believe they were only 3 members included 1 guitar player.
- The JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE: Jimi plays it all at the same time, impressive solos with rhythm guitar blended to a fantastic band.
- CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, I am a huge fan of them, and when TOM FOGERTY left the band, they continued with 3. I have a CD with CCR live, in the original line up, and CCR LIVE in Europe, with the 3 remaining members. John Fogerty may not be the most talented guitar but some songs on the album, like "Keep on Chooglin' " is amazing, the way he combines rhythm + solo.
I would add Ten Years After, but they have an extra member on keyboards. I always taught they were 3, until I discovered the 4th member. I believe you don't hear a lot of keyboards on the magnificent performance on Woodstock 1969. The way Alvin Lee played there is one of my all time favorites, with "I'M GOING HOME" what that man "squeezes out" of his guitar AMAZING
Do you know other bands with a 3 man line-up?

THIS ISN'T A GUITARIST CONTEST
Who plays the best version of this number
1) The MASTER HIMSELF = JIMI HENDRIX?
2) The MASTER HIMSELF = STEVIE RAY VAUGHN
It is difficult to compare but
1) listen very good
2) pay attention on arrangements, effects
3) the guitar, the way she's played.
PAY ATTENTION = HOW many guitarists are influenced by JIMI Hendrix compare that number with the number of artists influenced by SRV.
I don't believe Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist ever, but at least he was the best performer on guitar ever. IS THIS THE SAME? Read and you see it. A very talented and skilled player, who was one of the greatest performers.
Jimi created a wall of sound, he combined psychedelic with blues/rock and was a great showman.
He was beyond his time.

This is meant to give some useful information about different pick-ups.
Most of the chordians seem to love EMG PICK-UPS.
I found a site whee you can see them and hear them in action. It is really nice to compare different pick-ups. You have an EMG 81 listen to the neck PU in "clean" position and after this you listen to the EMG 60, they sound similar but the EMG 60 has more BASS

Topic: WHAT IS THE HALL OF FAME (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I really hope to get a decent answer on this question, because the first time I had 6 answers only one about the hall of fame.
So IT SEEMS TO BE A BUILDING IN CLEVELAND OHIO.
- When are you "invited" to be in the hall of fame?
- Is it about albums you sold?
- Is it for your contribution in music?
- Some artists are very soon in the hall of fame, for others it takes years.
- WHO DECIDES IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED IN THE HALL OF FAME?
Are the artists who are accepted in the hall of fame like statues in mme TUSSAUD or pictures?
Can please someone help me on this, I'd really appreciate it.

I did start again, indeed. I found a song back, one I wrote tears ago, but still in an instrumental phase, no lyrics.
I don't know if I will write lyrics, I recorded it on 2 tracks of my BOSS BR 600, and I added a second guitar part on another 2 tracks, with some delay. I used 4 guitars: a Telecaster 1952 reissue, a PRS 24 Custom, a Gibson LP supreme and a Duesenberg. THERE IS NO BETTER GUITAR THAN THAT DUESENBERG very strange.
I played it without any effect, except for the following tracks, I CAN'T POST IT ON THE INTERNET.
I have a PX4D effect = a package of cigarettes, but the PX5D has an usb + ableton light software.

Re: Les Paul: Gibson VS. Epiphone (8 replies, posted in Electric)
HAHA, this is a very familiar topic. I worked on a few similar topics, and it depends what you want. Gibson took over Epiphone 50 years ago (THE BIGGEST CONCURRENT) and I have the impression that the EPIHONE PRICE is really going up. Today you pay easy 500$ for a Epiphone Les Paul. It is finished I believe thinking that Epiphone is "a low cost Gibson." But some things I don't understand, like ZAKK WYLDE, he has 3 SIGNATURE MODELS. 1 Epiphone with 2 USA EMG HZ H4 pickups 800$
and 2 Gibsons (this is so stupid), one is 4500$ the other 7000$.
- Epiphone custom les paul limited edition List Price: $1,082.00 !!! in reality ON LINE 550$ but in a music store it will go up to 600-1000$ , same for the Epiphone LP standard.
I don't know but I bought 2 Gibson LP's on EBAY; one is a SUPREME, half the online store price.

Not to mention the "SORRY FOR THE WORD" penis contest, who drives the best and biggest PIMP CAR, WHO HAS THE MOST GOLDEN CHAINS. What I saw there (my rear window was broken because I opened the roof of a convertible while my ex-girlfriend put my crouches on that place) is unimaginable here in Belgium, were the women, all calling someone with there cell phones and not talking but shouting the most profane words you can imagine. Porsche, Mercedes and that's an attitude I dislike. So rappers NO.

I bought recently a few boxes of "elixir strings."They don't sound different, but they are real good and they last 5X longer than other strings.
The "gauge" the thicker you take the harder you can strum, but most guitar players, even metal players take 0.9 or 0.10

Re: Notice the difference? (4 replies, posted in Electric)
In a music store (I have a lot of guitars, so they know me very well) they always tell me to buy, when I ask the question (HAVE YOU SEEN HOW MANY DIFFERENT FENDERS THEY SELL? DOZENS) to go for an artist model, or a reissue. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY of course.
Here are plenty of topics about guitars and price ranges.
My advise is always the same: visit an online music store like www.musiciansfriends.com, look for Fender and see all the models. Compare some models and read the COMMENTS that other people wrote. Then go to youtube and look for th models you like, search them and listen and you will have a pretty good idea. If you have time go to a music store and take one of the models, see, feel and touch the guitar.Listen to that guitar and you will understand what I mean. You can go to EBAY, I gave bought on ebay 10 guitars and neverhad 1 problem.
I hope this info helps.

Re: What kind of guitar do you have? (240 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
THAT IS A DIFFICULT TO ANSWER TOPIC FOR ME. WHY?
I have 22 guitars both, acoustic and electric and if I write down every single guitar, well it's not fair compared to all the other chordians. First HOW DID IT START? In 1978 with a YAMAHA FG 300, still a remarkable and excellent guitar, bought with the money I earned by working in a BREWERY as student. In 1994 I had a brandnew GIBSON LES PAUL STUDIO, all black and reflecting with golden pick-up covers for 400$, with a special thank to a patient who was chief of the airport customs and the fact that the guitar had a little but visible defect in the wood of the headstock. Price = 400$.
I had to tune again this guitar almost after every song. I worked 85 hours a weel as Medical Doc and one a day in November 1996 a patient of mine having a drug problem asked me 700$. I told him that I wasn't a bank and he gave me a Martin HD-28 to get money. He didn't regret, because he didn't play since 10 years, and I knew NOTHING about the value of guitars. Then I invested 7500$ in a music store, and they paid me back in instruments, 2 Martins, Epiphone Sheraton (an older model), Ovation, and a few more. This was the beginning. I went back to my music store for the 3th time to fix my Gibson Studio again and looking around I saw a low priced PRS CUSTOM 24 bird inlay, hal the usual retail price. I worked so hard and didn't care at all talking about the price. I knew that guitar, we tested some guitars in another store some months before, GIBSON, FENDER and the salesman came with that PRS guitar and told: try this one, and I was lost. So months later, going to the store to repair the Gibson, I left the store without the Gibson (got 1000$ for it) and I left with that PRS a brands barely known here in Belgium. I just went to a Mc Donalds and came back to pick up the PRS and they told me that in the 45 minutes I was gone, 4 people came for that PRS, 3 professional musicians. My system was always if you see something and you can afford it buy it, if not you will regret it. As said I worked so hard and ...But the BEST GUITAR I EVER SAW AND PLAYED IS PURCHASED 2 months ago: a DUESENBERG 49er. See www.duesenberg.com and you find out why.

A POEM
Yesterday, my black magic woman, and my baby left me.
I twisted and shout baby come back, as dust in the wind.
I’ll be there, waiting for a friend but without you I can’t get no satisfaction.
Please please me and light my fire, I’ll be watching you.
Who am I, I need your love so bad, crazy on a sunny afternoon.
Let it be, a hard rain’s gonna fall and as I’m singing in the rain, please forgive me
See me, feel me, touch me I don’t smell like teen spirit, the air that I breathe , I’m hurt, more than words, but wake me up before I go go, go now I am proud Mary
Put your head on my shoulder, but don’t you cry before the November rain
Nothing else matters, I am sailing on the sea of love, pretty woman, only the lonely, come together use your yellow submarine, I’ll be there, so you can lean on me. I want you, so lay lady lay, I shall be released when I’m 64

Topic: THE MOST "PRENTIOUS" PERFORMERS (16 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Here I can talk again about JIM MORISSON, probably one of the most pretentious performers of all time.
I saw a lot of pretentious bands being back-stage doc at a big rock festival. But the worst people are the "entourage" thinking they are more important than the performer(s)
I WILL ADD SOME OTHERS, and of course I look forward to the discussions.
- OASIS the GALLAGHER BROTHERS are more famous for their fights and disgusting critics on other bands.
- PINK FLOYD (I WILL STEP ON THOUSANDS OF TOES), one of my all time favorite bands, are in fact pretentious, especially under the DICTATORSHIP of ROGER WATERS. What bothers me a lot is DID THEY EVER BRING A SINGLE ON THE MARKET? No, you needed to buy one complete album to have the 2 songs you like.
- BRITNEY SPEARS = NO COMMENT. I just wander HOW LONG IT TAKES to put make-up on her face. SHE IS A PATHETIC FIGURE AS IS
- MICHAEL JACKSON. A pathetic mental case who had the luck to have QUINCY JONES who is the man behind "thriller"
- BONO from U2 he has a kind of attitude that he is the new MESSIAH.
- THOM YORKE Radiohead.
- BOB DYLAN has written and influenced many bands nd songs, but he is weird, he acted like a king when I saw him walking to stage. He had 10 meters space to walk, but the 3 of us (me, a television celebrity and the editor of a very big magasine were pushed THEY REALLY PUSHED US to stand 1 meter from our original place, to give his majesty DYLAN 11 meters, he couldn't barely walk and was supported by 2 bodyguards who dragged him on stage, but the performance: AMAZING.
- the most disgusting woman I saw is AMY WINEHOUSE, a mean drogued star. Star is even too good.
