When I first read this topic and the subsequent posts I was reluctant to add anything as it sounded like a requiem for Chordie given all the problems Per has had to deal with to comply and keep this ship afloat, and to be honest I too owe much to this entity we have all come to love as a family, and with any family there will be squabbles and disagreements and it matters little if you were right or wrong that's human nature,Chordie has provided me with the opportunity to introduce a recording forum and collaborate with musicians from all over this world in addition to making cyber friendships with many members so I do not intend to say "I will miss Chordie" that would be like abandoning a ship that is still floating I only will say may she keep sailing with a stiff wind in her sails to new horizons smile

Aye Aye Captain....I started coming here for the tabs but I think the forums are even more useful. Even if all the tabs get blocked, I say FLOAT ON!!!!

I believe in the old sayings "all things happen for a reason" and "for every door that closes another opens". I truly hope this is the case for you and your family. Keep your spirits up.

I second that (or third I guess)
I discovered his work a few years back as well. While he gets some recognition, not nearly as much as he should. He is one of the elite song writers of all time.

Don't do it!!!! That's too fine of a guitar. By yourself a Mexi Strat or Chinese copy if you're wanting a single coil!!!!!

Alternate tunings open up all sorts of opportunities for different riffs and chords. I will occasionally dabble in them. Soe of them can be pretty brutal on acoustics though (lots of broken strings).

Uh huh...Congrats to your Canes. A very memorable series. Canes outskated the B's pure and simple.

I have given 3 guitars to young relatives who were interested in trying their hand.  In each case it was an old, not expensive guitar and I bought a newer better one for myself.  I missed my old guitars, but as long as they were learning with their new gift, I was happy.  In a couple of cases the kids got them and practiced for awhile and then just sat them in the corner and never picked them up again.  I wasn't too happy about that.  One grandson put stickers all over it and that made me a little mad.

OK. I said I never would get rid of one but you've got a noble reason there....OK under those circumstances I would give a guitar away.

Geo even tho you think the acoustic track sounds good it couldn't hurt to add another useing the same chord posistions and pan them left and right Ive done this a few times to give the recording a fuller sound and sometimes I lay another acoustic track and play the chords in the second posistion give it a shot sometimes and see if you like it, if you have "messed up a track"take the time to redo it you dont get a second chance to make a first impression smile

I usually cheat and just duplicate the track and then pan them right and left. You see Russell, I'm fairly competent technology wise but a truly awful musician. I try to make the most of what God gave me (that is, some technical aptitude and very little musical sense!!!).
Do you have any issues with duplicating guitar leads? I can never seem to remember what I've done note to note. I've finally taken to staying on a scale or in key (and that was a struggle!) but I just seem to perform things differently every time...so once I get it I leave it alone.

I use that 1 too. This thread is teaching me that although I know it's wrong I do it anyhow. I also try not to use "ain't" and curse words but have not been able to shake either.

Me too but I find myself using it all the time....just can't help myself.

Tough call. When I learned bar chords I used them to make my switches easier (like Zurf's example above) and I still do this to an extent. I base my choices more on how they sound now versus convenience in most cases. There is a suttle difference even between open G and bar G on the 3rd fret; very similar but not the same. I prefer an open G most times. It just rings a littel prettier. bar chords also open up a whole new world of "percussive" strumming so this is also a consideration.

You are correct Doc. It's one of those things we say that has no meaning. I've always felt that way about prefacing something with "in my opinion" (even though I do this frequently!); if you're saying it it's obviously your opinion or factual in either case no need for the phrase. Another is "basically".

I've always felt the effects going in (i.e. live) sounded better than the ones added after the recording by your mixing software. I always try to anticipate what effects I want before I record the track(s). I only use the "after the fact" effects when I've "messed up" or changed gears. Usually I'll go so far as to replay with updated effects unless it was a track I don't feel I can duplicate. I'm not sure how everyone else feels but when it comes to lead guitar, I can play into the same track 10 times and get 10 different results!!!! I guess that's just all part of being "not that good"!!! Just my 2 cents.

Some of the copies are pretty darn good. I've never been snobby about what to play. I have a Agile Les Paul copy that I think is every bit as good as the Gibsons I've played. And I think it's better than the Epiphones with respect to craftmanship and sound. I disagree with mislabeled or misleading headstock decals and I don't want my Agile to say Gibson; it's an Agile and I'm fine with that. For me it's all about how does it play and sound, I care very little about what the head stock decal reads. No disrespect to Gibson or Fender but some of their products simply are not worth the money. Play a Agile 3100 and a Les Paul Studio and tell me the Gibson is 5 times better because they are 5 times the price. Better yet wear a blindfold and tell me which one is the Gibson!!!!

Hey Doc,
I don't have nearly as nice a collection as you but my policy is never to sell any of my guitars (I only have 8: 3 acoustics, 3 electrics, 1 bass, 1 mandolin). You make a good point about regret. I'm afraid I will regret my decision at some point in the future so my policy is no selling. If I really want another I find a different financial way to accomplish getting it. It might take longer but I'll never have regrets.

Hey Doc,
Russell has done a stellar job in the recording forum answering all those questions. I can tell you how I am set up; maybe it will help.

Phase I
I downloaded Audacity software (free) and bought a cheap PC mike/headset and an adapter from 1/4" to 1/8" to allow me to directly plug in to my PC's sound card (already had the guitar cable). This got me going in a very basic manner. Total cost was minimal (under 20 $ US)

Phase II
After the novelty (and shock of how awful  I sounded) wore off my next purchase was a decent PC USB microphone ( I settled on MXL for the price but there are certainly better ones out there; again read the posts in the recording Forum for advice on your selection).

Phase III (currently and always expanding)
Picked up a Tascam USB audio interface which allows me to further tweak my levels and allows more types of inputs like MIDI, Phono, XLR, etc. I also added a line 6 POD for effects in line before the Tascam (and damn is that fun!!). I bought 2 additional microphones. One for instrument recording; one for voice. DON"T underestimate the power of a great mic. I've started using Mixcraft for recording/mixing as it has a few more features and builtin tracks but Audacity is a great product that didn't let me down. I added some multi input Alesis speakers (MXL 320 USB) to allow me to feed the audio in my Line 6 effects POD to multiple inputs (to record and listen.

Sorry for the long post. I am digging my recording set up and look forward to building on it. From your other posts I imagine you already have a lot of what is necessary to record. Again, Russell Harding's posts and tutorials will help you get started...So blame him when it becomes and obsession!!!! (as it did for me!!!)

I have Chordie to thank for renewing my desire to play when it begins to wane. And the forum is lots of fun. Like Zurf says above, I too enjoy the international perspective not just about music but all things. I like to mix of age groups too. Thanks to all that spend their time making this site happen. I for one appreciate your efforts.

No offense intended - just a comment as to the physical nature of the Bruins game vs the Canes speed game. I realize that it's part of the game (and at times the timidness shown by my guys really pisses me off).

The B's are schooling us tonight. Looks like I'll be staying home for game 6.

No offense taken!!! We used to call it "gooning"!!! We are still alive....game 6 is going to be real, real fun. If anyone out there is watching basketball right now, we in the Northeast are watching a fantastic Celtics series as well. I never realized it could be so exciting sitting on the couch!!!

May the best team win!!!!
