Re: Oh no! GAS meets Opportunity (45 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
The sale of my 12-string is pending today. If successful I will have sufficient money in my guitar fund to pursue the Larrivee OM-02 in earnest. But now I’m thinking its construction, mahogany and spruce, will yield a sound not too different from my Seagull S6 Mahogany Spruce rendering them near-duplicates. And for twice the price!
I plan to take the Seagull with me when I go to look at the Larrivee so I can compare. In the past I’d just charge in there and buy the thing but now – after a year of looking – I am considering caution? What is wrong with me?
In the meantime I have decided the 12-string (distraction and novelty) has to go.
I know, another DJ soliloquy.

Got a nibble on the 12-string!

The seller contacted me. He is traveling? Why post something for sale and leave town? The suspense is killing me BUT it does give me time to build the guitar fund in anticipation of a purchase. My 12-string is for sale. And this was done with a heavy heart but I've been hunting an OM for about a year now.

This guitar lead has grown cold. I suppose the seller has already done so or has changed his mind. Disappointing.

Interesting thread for someone struggling with understanding what it means to "play the guitar".

Re: GET BACK TO PLAYING! (143 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
My goal was to become a “good guitar player" . Two and a half years later I can play the guitar – sort of. Then I discover simple performances such as the two videos below and I can’t help wondering if I have what it takes.

Sallie Ford “Poison Milk"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nrtoX1BGFc
It looks so simple but clearly there is a LOT more to it then banging away on the guitar. (I realize I am seeing the final product of a lot of hard work, practice, etc.) “Musical ability" , rhythm, confidence or is it something else? I think maybe if I could/would sing the guitar would take care of itself?
I love playing and the sound of an acoustic guitar but what I think I am now realizing is that this is not enough and my original goal is misguided. I’m comfortable as a public speaker but singing is a whole new challenge. I can learn to sing I suppose but can I conquer the demon of confidence.
My dear Chordie friends, can you offer any ideas, suggestions, advice? I don’t plan to be on stage but I do want to enjoy the guitar and music with friends, family, etc.
p.s. I'm driving my son to Duke University today to a tennis camp. I will contemplate this issue during my LONG drive. I hope to hear from my friends here. Thanks in advance.

In a Rut again. I need to get out and play with others. Otherwise this rut will only deepen.

Mekidsmom,
Crap shoot you are right. I am slowly coming around to needing to play before purchase. If I can just keep my finger off the BIN button!

Topic: Anybody Currently Own a Harmony Stella/Sovereign Guitar? (2 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
As part of my lack of strategy dealing with GAS I've often thought of adding a Harmony Sovereign guitar to the mix. I know most of the common narratives relating to these guitars. Can anyone give me good reason to pursue or not pursue this piece of America? I'm looking for something to play not to hang on the wall of the local T.J. Applebee's.
A while back I found a local man who rebuilds them to include replacing the ladder bracing with forward X stuff. What's wrong with ladder bracing?

Spruce SEEMS to be more strum-friendly to me also. Anyone want to weigh in?
I've got target lock on the cedar "sister" of my S6 and am curious.

Re: Oh no! GAS meets Opportunity (45 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Contact. BUT last night I spent some time with my new (old) Seagull S6 Mahogany Spruce and boy oh boy it sounds good. I got to wondering what the Larrivee could offer being built from essentially the same materials, having the same binding, satin finish, etc and at twice what I paid for the Seagull. Maybe I am having some pre-emptive buyer's remorse. As much as I want(ed) an OM, maybe the good old Seagull dread is already answering the call?
I'd rather not "duplicate" an existing guitar. Decisions, decisions. So maybe someone is trying to tell me something?

Flybye,
Love the 15 series just cannot afford them. But I have played quite a few. To satisfy my mahogany curiosity I bought an all mahogany Cort L450C NS. VERY similar and somewhere between the 00-15 and 000-15. Solid mahogany top and back with split diamond fretboard markers, dovetail neck joint, Grover open back tuners. With this I am satisfied for now. It cost about 1/5 what a 15M series costs.
Not a Martin I know.

Topic: Making Memories: Transformers 3 (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I took my son and two of his friends to the midnight "grand opening" of Transformers 3 last night. We got home at 3 am. Boy am I tired as I prepare for work while the teens sleep. But this kind of thing has become a tradition with us and hopefully will be remembered fondly by the boys. One of the greatest gifts we have (as parents, as humans) is to make memories. Tired or not, I would do it again in a minute (or tonight).
By the way, these movies are known for their light plot, heavy reliance on special effects, and a little skin (to entice the teen boys) and this movie didn't deviate from this formula. However I think it was the best of the three Transformers movies. But if you go, keep your expectations low.

One asynchronous contact with the seller (email) but no meeting yet. Hopefully today. Meanwhile I think I've sold one of the guitars I listed on CL yesterday. If so I have the necessary funds (without dipping into the bank account) for the Larrivee. When these events line up like this I just know I am making the right decision. Someone IS watching over me! Wish me luck.

Really the "introduction" of a new guitar is not a problem. My wife has been more than understanding.
The seller has contacted me and I might be able to inspect the guitar today. In hopeful anticipation of what I know will happen if I get my hands on it I've listed two of the herd on Craig's List for sale. My guitar inventory is in constant flux but I do keep the "keepers".
Selling off a 1-2 will make ME feel better. Don't worry I am not approaching zero.

While in the midst of extreme GAS I just "found" a Larrivee OM-02 which is an evil temptress. If the guy calls me back I will likely be a goner. I have been eyeing the OMs for quite a while and in particular the OM-3 but always just out of my range. The 02 is out of my sweet spot range but within striking distance. Comes with HSC and misc accessories.
Next problem: How do I sneak it into the house?

Zurf,
I'm eyeing a Seagull S6 FOLK with a cedar top. In fact I just visited GC to play it. @ $300 nice but it seems to be more friendly towards picking and not strumming. There are thousands of reasons this might seem so to me not the least of which my lack of talent. Since I'm more of a strummer I might keep looking.
