Re: John Reno in Florida (10 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Hi Gang. Please allow me to update my fun trip to Florida. We had a great time and the hospitality was superb.
Our friend Jeff (Topdown) came out to the Friendly Fisherman to join us. What a treat. After our gig, topdown led us to the Holiday Inn where we could see Toney Hall (Southpaw41L) play at his gig. Topdown was so right about Toney. That man is inspiring, fun and a bundle of positive energy. He was kind to visit with us at our table. Toney is much beloved by the employees at his venue as well as his audience. Toney invited John Reno to join him onstage for a tune. We were wowed by Toney's tight show and great voice. We were also impressed by Toney's looper pedal and cool guitar effects when he played lead.
The next night we returned to the Nav-A-Gator for a wild night with many friends and super cool management and employees.
On Saturday we played a pool party at a private house concert.

It was a hoot with cordial hosts, cool guests, a washtub of cold beer onstage, great food and a room for the night.
Back to Alabama the next morning - grateful to all we met for good times and sincere friendship.

Re: Gigs (12 replies, posted in Acoustic)
A discussion of gigs must include house concerts. They are growing in popularity these days for good reason.
1. With the crackdown on drunk driving, a house concert enables most or many of the guests to walk home from the event or snooze until they can safely drive.
2. The expense of food, drink and entertainment is evenly shared by all and usually much less than an evening on the town.
3. Homeowners who like to entertain no longer have to bear all expenditures. More money is available to pay musicians if all attendees pay the same amount.
The homeowner starts by contacting the musicians and clearing the date for the event. He or she then sends invitations out stipulating requirements to pay ($15-$25 per person), supply a covered dish and and to bring
a chair if you wish to sit during the concert.
Musicians love this because the crowd is there to listen to the music.
John Reno and I played one this weekend at a fenced in swimming pool. The food was varied and yummy (pickers eat free). They supplied a washtub of our favorite beer and water bottles iced down on stage. They had a favorite "hooch" contest. Ten guests submitted a large jug of their favorite booze mix. Everybody got a shot cup and a ticket to write their favorite down and drop in a box.
We played three hours and joined the group to relax until we got sleepy. They had a bedroom for us and had a big breakfast and coffee with us before we left the next morning.
These are fun gigs.

Re: Opinions on Guitar choices, appointments, features, etc? (15 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I'm seeing a lot of "if it feels and sounds good, it's good" advice. I am not even beginning to dispute that. However, if you don't like how a guitar looks, won't that affect your desire to play it?
I agree with the above. I need a guitar to sound good and play easily.
Looks and beauty take a distant low priority.
I'm old and beat up. I don't care if my guitar is as well.

Re: how would you play the chord that's being riffed on in this song? (5 replies, posted in Music theory)
Both above are correct. He is using a "chop" rhythm with a lot of distortion. I hear him rocking back and forth from F to Bb back and forth.
Chop rhythm is very effective using all covered chords (barres).

Re: Learning a song style (1 replies, posted in Acoustic)
His guitar is tuned 2 half steps below standard. Still, if you want to play this highly arbitrary tune, you can in standard tuning. He starts off in F.
he then settles down in the key of C.
His style could be folk.
