Hey, Buddddddy. Been a while since we done any typing, together. I know it ain't easy but you gotta get past them nerves. Just remember that I, just like all the other great musicans, had to start somewhere. We all get a little nervious and have to deal with the anxiety that builds up but that's only a part of life. You have an opporunity that most of us will never get so make the best of it. Take a deep breath, relax and let it flow. And if you don't go through with this I'ma gonna find me a way to get up there to Canada and give you a good ole Louisiana Booty Wuppin'. I betch'a I could even get me some help to come wid me.

Deadstring, Al, believe me when I say that someone needs to be in charge. The "core" group would be the main ones who spent their energies in getting the thing started. The one in charge is the one who welcomes everyone, if it's like the one we do there will be a prayer request, have snacks / food brought in by whoever shows but put out a "tip" jar just to pick up money for ice, paper cups, paper plates and that kinda stuff - don't charge the folks but do make them aware of what the donations will be used for. Keep the circle filled with the "core group" that you need. If you open the "circle" up to everyone you'll end up with more people playing that you will know what to do with. Let the core group go around a time or 2 then ask the listeners if anyone has a song they want to do. Make them feel welcome and they will come back. If you get too many pickers going at one time it just does not work. Our "core group" consists of a keyboard player, 4 to 6 (and thats a lot) playing rythym guitar, base guitar, one main lead guitar player with 1 or 2 others that will sometimes take a turn, a snare drum, sometimes a steel guitar and sometimes an accordian. Our fiddle player may or may not show up. Counting the players and others that sing we usually have about 15 to 2o people singing. On a typical night each of us gets 2 turns at the mic. Usually the core group will have an opening song to welcome everyone then for closing we get everyone to join in to I'll Fly Away. Everybody goes home with a smile on their face.
I would like to come over there one Saturday and my wife & I do a song or 2 but, like you, it'll have to be after July. And you know you got a standing invite to where we play.

Deadstring, that how we do the jam sessions, at a building at church. Are ya'll only going to do gospel music? We do a lotta the old country stuff. Have a pot luck supper and play until everybody gets tired. We do our'n the 2nd & 4th Friday of each month. Be sure you got a good sound system for a place that size. One other thing to keep in mind. You need 1 person to kind'a be in control of things and take the lead, you can't do this by committee. That person has gotta keep things flowing, set the limits on how much mic time everyone gets, make sure the lead guitar player don't get too loud (if you came to one of our's you'd know what I talking about). If ya'll need some player / singers let me know. I could put together a group of 3 to 5 people real easy or just me'n my wife. Not trying to invite myself but we are always looking for a place to play and we are less that 100 miles apart.

Go and get a fresh pig butt (Boston Butt). Put it in a pressure cooker with some crawfish boil seasoning - also you can add some taters & onions, mushrooms, tennis shoes, etc. Cook in the pressure cooker until the taters n stuff get good & done. Let cool, take the pig butt outta the pressure cooker and set aside (it ain't done yet), hold on to the taters n stuff for a tater salad. Now if you was smart you would'a already gotten a good smoke going in the smoker - now put you're pig butt in the smoker away from the fire and let it cook at about 200 degrees for about 6 to 8 hours. Keep a good eye on the temp and keep the smoke going. When you think it's done take it outta the smoker and let rest for awhile. If it's done then the shoulder bone will pull right out (yeah, a Boston Butt don't come from the hind end of a pig) When it's cool enough to handle take you're hands and start shreding the meat. If it too hot use a big fork. As you shred the meat place it in a tin foil pan and add your favorite B-B Q sauce. Let cook until you can't stand it any longer. Then serve with the tater salad and corn on da cob, fresh 'maters, and the tennis shoe au gratin. Good eatin'.
You can always pressure cook your butt the night before and start the smokin' 'round 8:00am That way it's done by early afternoon.

Then I wake up and realize just how much I have to learn. I feel like I'm a little better than a beginner. Far, far less that an expert. Best advice I was ever given:

DS, don't know the song but if its in the key of C and it's got an F chord in it there should be a G in there somewhere. Could also be a Am, too. I looked but could not find the song w/ chords, anywhere.

Just get a bunch of like minded folks together who likes music and take turns playing. Each one takes a turn at a song and the others just play along. After awhile everyone will kinda learn each others style, types of music, some will be good at lead, some will be good at rythym, sone will sing well, some won't but all will have a good time. Get a group together, plan getting together once a month or so and swap houses if everyone's comfortable with that. Plan to have snacks, drinks of your choice (but keep in within reason) and BE SURE TO HELP CLEAN UP AND PUT UP WHEN THE NIGHT IS OVER!

One thing I don't see mentioned is how you are holding your guitar. If sitting hold the neck higher as this will ease the angle of the wrist. If standing and using a strap get that guitar higher on your chest and keep the neck slightly elevated. It's very hard to master chords while standing if the guitar hanging below your belt.

Webmc - welcome to Chordie. Your post said - "one of the strings on the Fender is making a twang sound", what could cause this". Now are you asking "why just this string has a twang sound" or are your saying "how come the other 5 strings don't have a twang sound to match the one that does"? The right answer depends on the question.

I'm kinda agree with Deadstring - I still have nightmares about that one.
Then there's the classic - Night of the D-Cup Zombies. This was kinda an underground movie but if your into zombie's it's worth a watch.

BGD, I play a "long B" like you , just different. I barre the D, G. B & E strings with my index finger on the 4th fret. My pinky finger is on the High E string at the 7th fret. Kind of a stretch but very doable. For a Long A chord same fingering - index finger barre at the 2nd fret - pinky finger high e string at 5th fret.
Now here's something sweet. Place your fingers in the "Long A" position and strum. Now lift your pinky finger fron the high e string at the 5th fret - place your middle finger on the high e string at the 3rd fret and whatcha got? A7 chord. Same principle with the long B to make a B7 chord. Who woulda thunk it?

As for me I've found that the best way to practice the F chord is to learn songs in the key of C. Moving fron the C chord to an F chord to a G chord, over and over is good practice and it sounds good as well. Remember that when you form your C chord and all fingers are in position the middle finger is your anchor point. To form a F chord that finger does not move and that makes the formation easier. Then for the G chord, keep all fingers in the F chord position and slide up the neck 2 whole frets. Once you have mastered these movements, gotten your timing down, you are ready to play a 3 chord song in the Key of C.

Starrlee, as typed above you gotta hear the song first. Have you every listened to a song and found yourself tapping your toe to the beat of the song? Strumming is about timing, getting a feel for the beats of a song. Listening to the bass notes or drums will help you get a feel for this. Songs ar written in various thming formets - 3/4 (waltz timing) and 4/4 timing being the most common. As an example in 3/4 timing you have 3 beats per bar and it is counted 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3. In 4/4 timing you will have 4 beats per bar and it is counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4. These would be 1 strum per number. So you gotta learn to count the beats in a bar. Eighth nots, sixteenth notes will change everything but someone else will need to explain that.
Pick a song - hopefully a good ole country song - thats good and slow to begin with and that most folks will likely know and I will try to help you figure it out. Gimme an idea of a song that you like.
Next time you catch yourself tapping your foot to a song just put a pick between your toes and you be strummin'.
