Why isn't there a 13th floor in most US buildings?
Little story: the first floor in BELGIUM is above the ground floor, whe have a house with stores when you enter, and our first floor, second floor are above these shops. A true but sad story, a bunch of german youngsters wanted to perform a "bungee jump " from a 10 store building. This was a present for the anniversary of one of these boys. They had calculated everything from the top to the first floor with special equippement, on the helmet of the "happy birthday guy" was a camera, but they forgot 1 thing, THAT FIRST FLOOR, was considered as a European-like first floor.
RESULT: THE ELASTIC CHORD WAS 1 or 2 meter TOO LONG and the poor guy, well he filmed his own death.
Are there some other differences? or anecdotes?

Topic: How would you name your band. (1 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
I believe it is quit important to give a decent name to your band. But WHAT NAME? And is it important to "baptize" your band.
In fact there are a few things about choosing a name.
What is considered as a good name for a band?
1) a short name?
2) A long name?
3) A crazy stupid or weird name?
EXAMPLE
If I should choose a name it can be
1) The Rockdocs.
2) Phil Lips and The Lip Sticks
3) Docphil's swinging singing shaking nurse band.
WHAT NAME(S) WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR BAND?
Are those names stupid? Or not, just a few examples, and then NEXT THREAD
- PORNO FOR PYROS: for WHO?
- STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
- GOO GOO DOLLS: I was convinced that this was a girl's band.
- BLACK EYED PEAS: I was convinced that this was a man's band.

Re: Your Guitar (77 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
My very first guitar was an acoustic YAMAHA FG 300, with a hummingbird pick guard.
My first electric was a GIBSON LES PAUL STUDIO, in 1992, brandnew for 500$ (through the customs, having a friend there is very good. I had a lot of problems with that one.
She NEVER stayed in tune. In 1996 I bought a PRS CUSTOM 24n, VERY EXPENSIVE HERE, because almost unknown, and better, I got 1200$ for my STUDIO.
Al the other guitars came later, and my top 3 is
1) DUESENBERG 49er
2) PRS Custom 24
3) GIBSON LES PAUL SUPREME.

How many different churches are there in the USA? I was told long ago that the very first thing to do was become a member of a church.
If I wasn't people would neglect me. IS THIS TRUE OR NOT?
I must admit that when I see in a movie, people singing gospel that I am really amazed, the way they sing and swing, JESUS, this doesn't exist here in Belgium.

Yes it is.
CONCLUSION: one style of music can be different in Chicago versus New Orleans.
Remember CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL, a lot of people were convinced that they were from Louisiana, swamp ash rock
My question is: is there a real and clear difference between:
- CHICAGO BLUES
- ST LOUIS BLUES
- MEMPHIS BLUES
- NEW ORLEANS BLUES
- TEXAS BLUES (with ZZ Top & the late STEVIE RAY VAUGHN)
Is music in such a big country a lot different North versus South? I mean gospel, country & western, Rock

Ken, do you remember the band "THE HAPPY MONDAYS" with Shaun Ryder and the COMPLETELY USELESS guy named BEZ, who danced on a silly way, with two African "maracas" and his FEZ.
I had the honor to sit in their trailer when still backstage doc on that big festival.
I was stoned, just by inhaling 10 people's smoke of marihuana.
Bez meant nothing for that band on artistic point of view, but HE MADE THE SHOW, just by running around on stage, not following rhythm and just shaking sometimes with his maracas.
So was he important: YES, was he USEFUL: NO.

Topic: THANKS TO UPYERKILT: Bands replacing a member: more or less popular? (3 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Before I start this, this thread is inspired by something UYK has written about AC/DC's leadsingers.
1) BON SCOTT versus BRIAN JOHNSTON. He suggested that if BRIAN would have been the first leadsinger and replaced by BON SCOTT a lot of people would have written that BRIAN was a lot better than BON.
SO HERE THE THREAD: the impact of changing 1 important member.
1) QUEEN: We all know that the late FREDDY MERCURY was a genious, one of the best
pop/rock/hardrock voices ever. But the most important contributor here is BRIAN MAY. So today they are back in business with PAUL RODGERS (ex Free, ex- BAD COMPANY) AND NOW QUEEN.
In the history of rock music, band members have come and gone, but nothing is more controversial or dangerous then installing a new lead singer in an established rock outfit.
2) GENESIS: they started in 1967 with PETER GABRIEL as frontman, he left in 1975 or 1976 and in stead of searching another singer it was PHIL COLLINS (drummer) who took the lead vocals.
Am I alone or wrong if I say that their voices are not that much different?
3) DEEP PURPLE: is a lot more complicated, the most commercially successful line-up featured Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Roger Glover (bass guitar) and Ian Paice (drums). Gillian left and was replaced by David Coverdale, Blackmore left and was replaced by Bolin. They had two great albums: BURN, SRORMBRINGER.
4) BLACK SABBATH: the "forced" departure of OZZY OSBOURNE was not really hot news, if I remember, replaced by RONNIE JAMES DIO
5) FLEETWOOD MAC: here we have probably the most crazy changes of musicians and players ever, PETER GREEN left, I can tell you the whole story being a Fleetwood Mac fan. FANTASTIC band with PETER GREEN, and FANTASTIC band with Buckingham and Nicks.
6) VAN HALEN: when DAVID LEE ROTH left they lost a real "show member" who could play the crowd like nothing, he was a great loss.
DO YOU KNOW OTHER BANDS, worse or better after the departure of a frontman?

Re: BEST SELLING BANDS UK versus USA (5 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Fatstrings, the list is based on 2 things:
1) my personal knowledge of music which allows me to find very fast all different sources. A strange point is the fact that if you "google" MAKING MONEY ON LINE gives a big difference than MAKE MONEY ON LINE. This is just an example, and it took me a long time to notice that 1 single word, as first word will give different results if you put it second.
2) There are SO many lists, you have "Rolling Stone", "Billboard" "Q" .... and they all have there list.
3) It is also not so easy to compare records sold in the 60ties versus 90ties: more people on earth, more or a better economic situation. Just compare the year 1960 with a decade earlier: IF THERE WAS NO TELEVISION, JFK would have lost the presidential elections in advantage of NIXON. REASON: How many people could watch TV and notice that JFK had a lot more charisma than NIXON. A lot of stuff happens on TV.
THE BEST PHRASE I CAN QUOTE IS "VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR"by THE BUGGLES. They were the very first band you could see on MTV. MTV makes stars or destroy stars.
LISTS MADE TODAY WOULD BE A LOT DIFFERENT WITHOUT TV or RADIO.
4) I agree with you KEN, even when PETE BEST was replaced by RINGO STARR, there were problems.
5) Thank you UYK for a new idea.

I am not speaking about the "holy grails" like
- Gretsch white penguin, the original one with a price tag from 150.00 - 300.000$
- Gibson Standard 1958-1959-1960 with out of league prices
- Febders Stratocasrter up to 1965.
I believe that that Gibson serie sounds fantastic, but are they really the best?
I am more a PRS fan, and a duesenberg is also great(and affordable)

Topic: STRUMMING (9 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
In most of the music books I have, like for beginners, or better players, you find a lot of easy songs to play, although easy: what is easy.
I saw "HELP" by the BEATLES a tricky song, it seems so easy but it is definitely not a good beginners song. They start in A, followed by C#m (easiest way to play is taking the A chord on the 5th fret, and down to the 4th fret.
What you often see is "the strumming" like D D D U D U D.
QUESTION:
IS IT WRONG TO PLAY IT YOUR WAY? Like D D D U D D D, I play most the down strumming pattern, and I don't see a lot of difference. AM I WRONG or not?

Topic: DIFFICULT: THE BEST SONGS PER DECADE, or the MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
How many different songs are written and performed the last 50 years: millions? billions?
Every single person has his personal taste, so here is my all time favorite song list.
Some songs are "tear jerkers" others are heavy rock songs, and a QUESTION TO YOU ALL: DOES YOUR "mood" has an influence on what song you will hear? Sometimes I hate ballads, and I love AC/DC (for me the BEST HARD ROCK BAND EVER)
So here I go:
1950-1960
- Weird fact: HOUND DOG = BEAR CAT, SUN STUDIO went almost bankrupt.

Topic: The MOST INFLUENTIAL BANDS PER DECADE (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
THERE IS A SECOND TOPIC I never saw here, and so related with this thread.
You see often some lists, but they are so narrow minded, like THE 2 MOST INFLUENTIAL BANDS/DECADE.
I believe we will have a much more accurate response if you name the 5 most influential bands.
Take the 7ties: PINK FLOYD LED ZEPPELIN, where are the SEX PISTOLS, DEEP PURPLE?
Also it all started a few hundreds years ago:
- MOZART
- BEETHOVEN
- BRAHMS
- And most important BACH see PROCOL HARUM and other "psychedelic bands" using the classics
1950 - 1960
- Bill Haley & Comets
- Elvis Presley
- Jerry Lee Louis (I was told in the sun studio in Memphis that Jerry would have been BIGGER than Elvis, but he destroyed his career with his personal life, like to marry his 13 year old niece)
developed his own style mixing rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie, gospel, and country music, as well as ideas from established "country boogie" pianists.
- Buddy Holly
- Chuck Berry
1960-1970 A crazy decade, probably the best ever. BOB DYLAN!!!!
- The Animals
- The Beatles
- The Rolling Stones
- Cream
- Beach Boys
- Jimi Hendrix and many others. BUT THE "FOUNDING FATHERS" ARE John Mayall, Alexis Korner.
1970-1980
- Still THE ROLLING STONES.
- The Eagles
- Led Zeppelin
- Deep Purple
- Pink Floyd
- SEX PISTOLS
- DISCO: Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor.
1980-1990
- Kraftwerk
- A few New Wave bands, BLONDIE, CARS, DURAN DURAN
- METALLICA
- AC/DC
- VAN HALEN
1990-2000
- NIRVANA
- PIXIES
- GUNS 'N ROSES (+ Metallica again)
- RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
- RADIOHEAD
2000 - ?
- COLDPLAY
- R&B bands
THERE are so many more artists, so make your list. Just think, and write them here

It should belong maybe in artists and bands, but I won't refer a band.
It is more a kind of question.
WHAT IS THE "COMPOSITION, better COMBINATION" (don't know if this is correct) OF A BAND.
1) 3 players: GUITAR, BASS, DRUMS with one or each of them vocals.
2) 4 players = a more classic line up, 1 drummer, 2 guitar players, 1 bass, vocals see 1
3) 5 players: 1 singer, 2 guitar players, 1 bass, 1 drum
4) 4 to 5 players, one playing "keybords/piano.
Of course you can start with saxophones, trumpets, and so on BUT I TRY TO KEEP IT SIMPLE.
I PREFER the 4 member line up.

BUSH, BUSH, BUSH, BUSH, BUSH, BUSH, BUSH, BUSH ³
Lena, I have learned and in particular since I had to stop working that the world stood still.
It took me a log way, and I am maybe half way on that road, but I focus myself more and more on the little things in my life. Like seeing my daughter (almost 21 y old at X-mas) and to notice the happiness in her eyes when she is with her "fiancé" (sometimes I ask myself the question why some people have it all, she is a real beauty, asked to be a model by great agencies AND SHE REFUSED!!! RESPECT & RESPECT", she is so sweet, she helps people, and I melt away when I see her happy. I live day by day and every day is dfferent. Despite my physical restrictions, I find happiness a lot easier than before. My dreams and memories: nobody can take them away.
I say: THE GOOD NEWS START WITH YOURSELF. Turn negative into positive. About the financial crash, you will only hear the very loud voices of the greedy people. If you believe in God, you'll find him even under a stone.

Bands who try it or tried it inn ENGLISH: The PEBBLES, WALLACE COLLECTION (song = daydream), DJANGHO REINHARDT, more recent dEUS: they are quit famous in Europe.

STRANGE THREAD, but:
Take the "dinosaur bands", like the EAGLES, ROLLING STONES, DYLAN, and more like U2, ZZ-top, Radiohead in fact the really great bands who perform together since 25-40 years?
Is Lou Reed still able to play "Berlin"?
Would BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, when you meet him in a bar be able to sing his fantastic sog THE STREETS OF PHILADELPHIA?
They have got so many hits, but when they perform, are they still able to perform that and that famous hit?
Like the Rolling Stones: "satisfaction", "ruby Tuesday", "paint it black"
1) do they still know the riffs, licks and lyrics?
2) OR do they need again a couple of days for rehearsal?
WHAT DO YOU THINK.
I think NO, when you ask them to play AND REPRODUCE THE LYRICS.

I went to my musicstore for an acoustic amp, a MARSHALL just like you AS50D.
BUT the salesman told me to TRY THE MARSHALL AS100D.
I did what he asked and left with the AS100D. The difference between the 2 was too big = AS100D is impossible to compare.
I also use that amp a lot to play "electric", providing you a crystal sound. No feedback noises, & an electric gives you the real sound. I tried several guitars on my amp, and wow! what a difference. You really hear the telecaster tone, gibson ...
TO PRACTICE:
A great help for me is, since I play alone, the PANDORA PX4D, 149$ and 100 PX4D provides 100 preset programs + a great rhythm section, a great device to follow rhythm. The PX5D = another dimension. I wanted to sell my PX4D but I think I made a good choise, they aren't equal. Here a link to these devices.

Hi tooter, do you have a lot of gigs? Are you a professional, semi-professional or amateur?
My dream was always to do something in music, but I became a medical doctor.
If I should start it over, I would study to be lawyer, with specialization in copyrights.
In the mean time following music classes.
First the notes (hate that part), and then an instrument like guitar. The problem is they teach you "classical guitar." But that's a good point to start playing folk, blues.
I should have gone to OXFORD (UK) and follow classes pop, blues, rock, followed by an MBA in he USA + improving my musical skills, PIANO + GUITAR.
But count all the years: you are 30 years finishing everything. With all your knowledge, it won't surprise me that I end up in some record companies.
Dreams are dreams, but sometimes they are very close to reality.
Women, and jealousy justified or not = dangerous cocktail. Even playing not bad at all the guitar, I practiced 2X with a band, but WORK was too important for me, having a successful practice. When I should perform, I really prefer to play incognito, playing and acting with a minor chance that people would recognize me.
