I'm betting it was the codpiece.

I kind of like a medium.  I'm actually more concerned about the build quality and appearance.  I prefer thinner leather or suede with decorative embossing.  smile

I think these are the bomb.

The only exception is THUNDERSTICK!!!'s strap.  That guitar weighs a metric ton, so a wide padded strap it is for me.

Sound on Sound magazine is published in the UK and is targeted at serious amateur and professional recording and production folks.   As part of their promotional efforts, they occasionally publish free booklets and guides about various aspects of recording.

They have recently come out with a publication called "Microphones: Products & Practice" and it is utterly fantastic.   Like any commercial magazine, they promote their advertisers heavily, but that's OK as their advertisers are all the folks you want to buy from, anyway.   The guide covers in good detail the different kinds of microphones available, how you might use them, different recording techniques, and what kinds of audio sources are better recorded with what kinds of mics.    It also covers how to understand microphone performance;  i.e. how to read a polar pattern or response chart.

And if you like microphones as art (I think they're beautiful) there's a whole lot of pictures.  smile

In order to get the guide, they want your email address, but you can opt out of hearing from them if you want.   Personally, IMO, if you are reading this section of the forum, you probably want to be reading Sound on Sound anyway.  It's one of the few places on the internet that I actively allow through my spam filter.   They're really good.

Anyway, here's the link to get you to the buyer's guide.

And here is the SoS website in whole.

Enjoy!

Everyone knows there's a Starbucks on every corner in Seattle.  What most people don't know is that there is a brewhouse on every other corner in Seattle.   You can go to the same bar every week for a year, and never drink the same beer twice.

It is quite cool.

I saw Tesla open up for Poison way back in '88 or so.   We went to see Tesla, and managed to get "a few people behind the barrier close."  Poison... we sat in the back and smoked a lot of pot.

Good show, in most respects.  smile

I use it's big brother, the US-800.  It is a great device and I've had good results with it.

The two advocacy groups here for recording are Audacity and Reaper.  Audacity is a fairly simple application but you will be able to start quickly as the learning curve isn't that steep.   Reaper is a full blown mixing desk with all the features and functionality that you would expect to find in a professional studio.   The drawback is that it takes a little bit more hiking up the learning curve in order to become proficient with it.

Since they both cost exactly nothing, you can download them both, experiment, and decide what works best for you.

BGD, what could make the strings grab at the nut. changing to a heavier gauge string?

Physics would make them grab at the nut.   It's just something they do.  Change your strings and rub a little pencil lead in the nut groves when you do.

We're getting ready to play a private party, and we always keep a couple of covers in our pocket, just in case.

Right now it's "The Only Hell My Momma Ever Raised" by Johnny Paycheck and "Ain't Glad I'm Leaving" by Justin Townes Earl.

Or play a B7 on the V, which is not only cool, but a whole lot easier to fret.

I generally don't get upset at celebrity deaths, but I really liked Gandolfini.

Between The Sopranos and True Romance, the guy should have won all the awards.

Abandon theory and notation for now.  Teach her three chords, and a dozen different songs that can be played with those three chords.

Success at that will breed success elsewhere, and if she's smart, she will figure out what that means on her own.

There is something to be said for volume, though.   Guitars start to do odd and marvelous things when cranked up to 11.

It may be a result of a change in humidity.  If you are more or less humid than the store it was stored it, it will change the tone a bit as it adjusts.  It might also be the strings hardening.

Either way, the best three tips you'll get for playing are practice, practice, and practice.  smile

Good luck, and enjoy!

But if you are going to accept a substitute, don't use a computer, use a book.  Try this:  Buy a book.  Start on page 1.  Do not leave page 1 until you understand and can do everything on page 1.   Then move to page 2, and repeat that process.   You can sit on your couch and do this while watching TV.

Last time I tried that I sat on page 1 for 2 weeks. still didnt "get it",  asked a friend finally, took 15 min.  A live person is really a must.  The vids  by everyone we have all mentioned befor are the next best thing in my opinion.  As I said, Rocksmith is just a fun way to get over the usually boreing stuff.  Espicially when you can get the cheat codes to be able to go directly to the skills arcade lol (ask a kid how to find the cheat code to any game and he will get you there LOLOLOLOL)

My guitar has a cheat code?   That is awesome.  smile

No, with the caveat that if you're going to preach your message in your song, it better be a damn good song.     My favorite examples of this are Neil Young's "Southern Man" and Leonard Skynyard's response, "Sweet Home Alabama."  Both outright awesome, preachy songs.   Am I particularly interested in the two very different messages being promoted here?  Not at all.  But I'll bob my head and sing 'em both.

Generally speaking, I don't even know the words to most of the songs I like.  big_smile

I think the best computer teaching aid I've ever seen is Apple's Garage Band lessons.  They have them for piano and guitar, and the lesson pace starts at "I've never done this before" to "how to play <genera of choice>."   I think the biggest problem with most of these apps is just exactly what Sat20 is finding.   You spend more time futzing with the computer than you do the guitar.

I'm going to play with my new laptop kit for a bit (Macbook Pro + TASCAM US-800 + Reaper + Reason) and see how well it works.   We did some quick microphone comparisons on Sunday with it and those worked out pretty well.

I've seen them below $500 the last couple of weeks, which is where I was looking for my price point.    But since I detached my TASCAM US-800 from my desktop and threw it in my laptop bag, I've now got the multiple input portable studio I wanted all along.

But I still want the DP-24, just because it's so damn cool.

No argument, which is why I was careful to use the word "most" twice.  Just like "AR-15", the moniker "AK-47" has become a generic term.  (However, personally I still prefer the .223/5.56.)

Here, we will agree to disagree.

There are plenty of anti-gun people who would change it if they could.  And anything in the constitution is subject to change with the right (or wrong in this case) people in power and on the judicial benches.

No, it's not.  The Constitution doesn't give you the right to bear arms, it says the government will not impede your right to bear arms.   That right exists whether the Constitution says anything about it or not.   This is an issue settled by the Supreme Court in DC vs Heller.  It is an individual right.

There are plenty of people that would change all kinds of stuff about everything.  It doesn't mean they can.    No one is going to take guns away from anyone.   It's a dead issue for everyone except people that need you to be afraid that someone is going to take your guns.  They aren't.  So relax.

That's because they aren't genuine Kalishnakovs.  They're craptastic type 56 knock-offs.   Real Russian Kalishnakovs are some of the finest assault rifles ever built.

Ah yeah..

However, more and more people feel that this constitutional right to keep and bear arms is in danger.

They should relax, because it's not.  It is long since settled law that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right, and no one wants to change that.   All the "They're gonna take our guns!!!" paranoia is simply hysteria intended to drum up sales.  And if the price of 9mm and .45 is any indicator, it's been entirely successful.

The audio is pretty horrible, what with being recorded by my cell phone, but I guess it is what it is.  It was built for Al (guitar player in the band) by Casey, the other former guitar player in the band who happens to be really handy with tools.

Better shot of it.
