Spencer Elliott    "Yin"   (original)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1__7Sg6GI68

For me, Spencer's work stands out among finger-stylists, as his compositional ability over-shadows the obvious "showmanship" of the technique. And his custom guitar built by luthier Jedediah Wiebe (Vancouver) is a work of art in itself.

Thanks guys. I read it to Ann who loved it. Haven't had a chance to read it to the grandkids yet, I think the youngest will love it? I'm thinking of sending it to my local paper though I'm a little dubious about the "pooped" line?

With the modern acceptance of so much profanity, I doubt the paper will have a problem with your polite scatological reference. I have a fishing buddy whose past tense for this is "shat" ... I roar everytime he says it, and he doesn't know why. lol

Hahahaha ... that last line knocked me on my butt ... so non-chalant. Good one, Phill ... thanks for the chuckle.

Yeah, they're definitely weaponized to the hilt. For any Trekkies, it would be easy to imagine Kahless vanguishing his enemies with these, to save the Klingon empire.

Thanks everyone. The whole point being that (thankfully) the nightmares aren't real, and (sadly) the good dreams aren't either.

Don't know how I missed this one, Jandle, but it is sooooo good. Your willingness to share her emotional pain is a risk many of us don't / won't expose ourselves to ... good on ya!

They've come up with an awful innovation called OVEN CHIPS!!!! Yuck. Less fat? Less taste more like. As your fine lady is from the north east I bet she makes a good chip? People from up there like to say the north east is the home of fish and chips and mushy peas.... that's an argument for another day lol

Hahaha ... you're 100% accurate about her love for Fish & Chips. When served on a paper plate, the grease should soak through to the table, or they're not made right ... in her opinion. big_smile I just thought of another North American nomenclature quirk: we order "fish & chips" knowing what we're getting, but then refer to the "chips" as French fries! I don't get it ...

What a terrific find, Graham, and for 30 quid ... wow!

When Hohner, Ibanez, and others were doing their copies in those days, they actually came out with some really decent ones. I had an Ibanez 1970 Telecaster imitation (sold years ago for rent money) and I honestly haven't played a Fender telly that felt or sound as good. I think it weighed over 10 lbs ... brutally heavy.

Nice to read your post, by the way ... welcome back.

So I wandered into the custom guitar section of ESP's website last evening, and found these incredible creations by one of their designers, Masao Ohmuro. Although the whole skull-duggery themes aren't my cup o' tea, I immediately thought of our own "Metalizer". So here's the link, Scott, for you to post in your "Dear Santa" letter: smile

After a restless night of back-to-back dreams and nightmares, this came out this morning:

THE THING WITH DREAMS

It glimmered.
A twinkling eye-sparkle of an idea
Conceived at a random moment
Perceived in a random bypath
Born of inspiration?
Bearing investigation?
It glimmered, and was gone.

That's the thing with dreams … momentary
That's the thing with dreams … fragmentary
That's the thing with dreams … temporary
That's the thing with dreams … illusory

It shimmered.
A millions glints of light
On a breeze-swept lake
Continuous split seconds
Was it here?
Was it there?
It shimmered, nothing more.

That's the thing with dreams … momentary
That's the thing with dreams … fragmentary
That's the thing with dreams … temporary
That's the thing with dreams … illusory

It whimpered.
A purposeless aspiration
From a listless futile void
Drowned in agonized noise
Did it matter?
Will it matter?
It whimpered, and it won't.

That's the thing with dreams … momentary
That's the thing with dreams … fragmentary
That's the thing with dreams … temporary
That's the thing with dreams … illusory

Thanks for your "slice of life" story, Bill ... great reading.

The only real "band" I ever played in was also with me being the only white guy with a group of 5 African-Canadians who were some of my best buddies. Their guitarist had broken his wrist playing basketball, so I was asked to sub for him for several High School dances in the area. Introduced as "the honky on guitar", it was a fun 3 months. But Roger's wrist healed, and I was eventually out of a "job". It was fun, they were appreciative, and whenever we see each other these many years later we smile, laugh, and recall those great times. The ridiculous name of the group was "Soul and the Bad Ones" ... what were we thinking? lol

Here's a brilliant cover of Deep Purple's "Lazy", featuring Jimmy Barnes (vocals), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboard), and Joe Bonamassa (guitar). This is freakin' awesome ... these guys really kicked this one into high gear:

I've given away my floor stands to people I don't like, 'cuz they inevitably get a cord or straps caught on them, back into, tripped over, etc. and guitar gets damaged. tongue No, really I didn't do that, but wall hangers are definitely a way safer to store guitars. PLUS ... it looks real cool having them on display.

Two first-class "Blues Fixes" in one weekend ... well done, both of you!

CG ... I'd never heard of Ms. Magness ... what a beautiful, soulful voice she's got ... thoroughly enjoyed her.
And BadEye ... Muddy's always one of the best choices on the menu. Thanks to you both.

Bill ... glad you enjoyed it. Apparently, the song is about a piece of abstract art that the wife of former member Adrian Belew brought. He tried to understand / appreciate it, but somehow it never quite got there. That said, the song could apply to just about anything that barely eludes the senses.

Peatle ... that's so cool that you "know a guy who knows a guy" in connection with Robert Fripp. I've often thought he must do Tax Returns when he's not playing guitar, as he certainly projects that well-ordered, austere persona. Turns out he's just like that according to your friend, which isn't terribly surprising.

Thanks so much for the prompt report, CG ... very much appreciated. If the flourocarbon's are producing a thin / tinny sound, that would not be desirable at all. I really appreciate you testing them out, and am sorry for your wasted expense.

The last time I tried a significantly "different" string was a set of Ernie Ball Cobalts on my Les Paul. The claim was that cobalt strings had a greater magnetic attraction to the pickups than other types. Unfortunately, that meant less sustain, and I just couldn't get them growl like the D'Addario NYXL's do. It sucks to throw away $$$, but sometimes it's the only way to find something out, i.e., try it for ourselves.

Again, thanks for the report!

I've used flourocarbon fishing line for years and never thought of using it for guitar strings. As guitar strings are they sold by gauge or by pound test?

Hahaha ... got a good chuckle out of this, BlueJeep. Having one on board the boat will mean I'll always have spare leaders in a pinch. lol

Thanks, Doug and CG ... appreciate your input.

I hadn't thought about the 4-ohm impedance, Doug ... great suggestion. According to Celestion's info page they come in 8 and 16 ohm, so I can wire two of the 8-ohm speakers in parallel and the combined resistance will be 4-ohms. The amp itself has a selector switch for either 8 or 4 ohms, so I'll have to make sure that's set properly (at 8 ohms now, because there's just one 8-ohm speaker.

I'm also going to goof around with the cabinet shape for better sound dispersion. With the speakers over top of each other, I plan to angle their mounting boards away from the true front, facing in opposite directions about 15-degrees or so. Should look kinda cool, also ... like a rejected BOSE creation. big_smile

Something to do in the dark evenings after Christmas!

King Crimson    "Indiscipline"    Mexico City, 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpZxwe4SXY8

Here's a reworking of an older KC classic from their 1981 album "Discipline", which was their 8th studio album. It was also their first album after a 7 year recess, which saw only founding members Robert Fripp (guitars) and Bill Bruford (drums) returning. New vocalist/guitarist Adrian Belew and bassist Tony Levin were now on board for the 80's, and they brought a "new age" flavor to the music. This song has some of that creative caustic chaotic cacophony of that time. In this clip, I don't think I've ever seen three drummers have so much fun, as (L>R) Pat Mastelotto, Jeremy Stacey, and Gavin Harrison are doing here. Lots of glances and grins being exchanged! And the intense yet vague lyrics could mean almost anything to anyone, as the conversations at SongMeanings.com indicate. Enjoy!

Glad you enjoyed them, CG ... they're a special duo, for sure. I thought their use of the right leg at the guitar's waist was odd; I usually play classical in the more orthodox way, with the waist on my left leg. But then again, I can't play anywhere near like these two can, so who am I to even have an opinion? big_smile

Thanks, CG ...

Unfortunately, I can't find anyone in Canada who sells the 2001's in store or online. And with the huge difference in our currency these days, ordering them from a USA site makes them very expensive here. I think I'll try the Vivace's, and see how they work out. Knowing La Bella's high quality standards, they should definitely be worth trying.
