Great song, daddycool. I think the F/C - Bb chord sequence should officially be known as "daddycool chords." When ever I play them, I think of your songs.

At the end of the semester, we were reading "Slaughter House Five" by Kurt Vonnegut, and my teacher showed us a letter that Vonnegut wrote to the chairman of a school board in North Dakota. The chairman had ordered the student's copies of Vonnegut's book to be burned because he considered novel obscene (I thought "Slaughter House Five" was one of the greatest books I've ever read!).

What does this have to do with guitars? Well, Vonnegut's letter came from a website called "Letters of Note." Today,  I was reading some of the other letters on this site and found one written by an 18 year old kid named Keith Richards,  who is telling his aunt about a new friend who loves Chuck Berry as much as he does. I bet a lot of you guys already know who this new friend is, but I didn't, and it was neat-o to read about it.

Here's the link to the letter: http://www.lettersofnote.com/2012/04/he … agger.html

I was  impressed with how charming and witty Keith's writting is. Nowadays, he seems to have a reputation as a mumbing kook (a la, Johhny Depp in "Priates of the Carribbean), but this gives me a whole new perspective on his unique personality.

Does anyone have any stories about how young musicians met up and formed legendary bands? I love the conversations we have on this forum and I always learn a lot from you guys. Thanks!

Super Pete! I always love your voice. Got a question for you--what kind of microphone did you use, and did you use one mic for this or two? Thanks!

Hi Pete,

I found out it was made for commercial for a video guitar game. I guess it was done with CGI. Still, it's pretty funny.

Hi Michael,

Isn't that tab laying out the melody line for the Ring of Fire:  "Love is burning flame"? I think you can pick it according to the rhythm that Johnny Cash sings it.

Toots,

I can sing it in that key, but I can't sing it like the guys in the video. I'm more like Minnesota Lutheran girls choir. Or as my choir teacher says, "M.B. you have a big smile, but a small voice, better put you in front."

Thanks for the link, Zman--I think I might acutally be able to learn this. Maybe.
Better have some ice cream first.

Hi Jamier,

Well, here'e an Ole and Lena joke that has that same kind of one-liner suprise ending as the one you shared. You kinda need to know a little Minnesota geography. Zumbrota is south of the Minneapolis, and Duluth is about 200 miles north of Minneapolis on Lake Superior.

Ole and Lena got married down in Zumbrota and they decided to drive up to the Twin Cities for their honeymoon.  As they were nearing Minneapolis, Ole put his hand on Lena's knee. Giggling, Lena said,"Ole, you can go farder den dat if you vant to."

So Ole drove to Duluth.

Bada-bing.

p.s.: When I was 11, I killed with this joke at the talent show at the Sons of Norway Hall in Wykoff!

jamier,

I love your Scottish jokes--they sound just like the  Ole and Lena (Norwegian) jokes that everybody tells around here in Minnesota.

Petey called.  He says he likes it when you read the library books to him, but even if you don't you're still aces in his book.  And also he wants you to learn Mr. Bojangles.

- Zurf

Zurf,

I looked up "Mr. Bojangles" on Youtube and Chordie--what a great song. When he sings about how Bojangle's dog died and he still misses him, it made me cry!! I'm practicing the chords, but it's hard to sing it without choking up a bit. Thanks for telling me about it.

Speaking of Petey, when I'm practicing guitar and he wants me to play with him, he comes in my room and jumps up and put his front paws on my knee and nudges the neck of my guitar with his nose. Then he wags his tail and and looks at me. If I don't stop playing,  he starts to bark and whine until I do. His favorite thing is to go "smelling" in the woods--he'll walk for about ten feet, then spend a about minute sniffing something really interesting, then walk a little bit more, then sniff. Over and over. Did I mention that he's a beagle?

Hi Toots,

Yeah, the Applause can stand up to a travel, camping, and weather. I like it because the neck is pretty narrow and easy for me to play.

I think most people who own a guitar just want to play songs or make some noise. They have no dreams of playing professionally so musicianship is lost on them. Youtube is there goal so their friends can see them. Musicians are few and far between.

Only problem for me is that I think most of the people (amateurs) I see on Youtube are pretty good. Almost all of them seem to know a lot more than me and play better than me, too. So I'm not even at the level of those musicianshipless players. Think I'll go hug my dog because I don't have a Martin to hug. <sigh> But I know this--even though I've only got a second hand Ovation Applause, I'm still spoiled, cuz unlike most of the people in the world, I've got enough to eat, and I live in a safe part of the world, and I've got a great family and a nice house to live in. And I get to go to school and learn. And my town has a library where I can check out books for free. And my dog, Petey, loves me. Don't you Petey?

You've got to watch these sisters! Lennon plays guitar has a beautiful voice and little Maisey supplies sweet and gentle harmonies.

Hi Pete,

I liked your Elivis cover, but I REALLY liked your cover of "Peaceful Easy Feeling"! Great job--I think your voice is perfect for the Eagles.

At some point in your guitar playing, you've probably felt a bit like this fellow , but he carries his frustration to extreme. Sometimes funny, sometimes scary, sometimes just sad, but ultimately, very human.

I'm learning a beautiful love song by a group from the '70s called Bread. The song is called "If." I think the lyrics and melody are really sweet. Plus, it's a great song to practice three barre chords: Gm, Bm, F#.

Zurf, could you describe how to do a walkup from A to C? And remember, I'm not very experienced, so you've really got to spell it out for me. Thanks!

You just take a finger and after you play an A on the A string you leave all your fingers in place as much as you can and put a finger on the A at the second fret to get a B, and then you move to a C for an easy and nifty bass walkup.

- Zurf

Thanks, Zurf. I think that walkup sounds cool!

Just a couple of old friends strumming their way through a rehearsal. One with a Martin D28 (probably), the other with a Gibson J200. Happy Birthday, Zimmy! RIP George.

Hi beamer,

Thanks for all the cool song links!!  My big brother listens to the Doors, so I've heard bits and pieces of their songs, but I've never really sat down and listened closely to them. I'm sure they'll be great; I'll let you know how the listening went.
