Congrats bud.  Great news! We can say we knew you when.

They were nice and bright at first but they dulled really quickly. And it wasn't a warm mellow tone. It was a dead string tone. Poor sustain, etc.

I suppose they are fine if you want to change strings 4-6 times a month but I don't have time or $ for that.

Wow you’re hanging out with a woman and not just to her in her knickers? Our big guy is all grown.   I’m proud of you.

I just tried those fancy black coated strings from DR and pulled them right back off after 3 weeks.  They go dead so fast.

If my memory serves me correct, Jeff (Topdown) had one when I was at Chordiestock, but it was a while ago and I may be mistaken. If he does not respond here drop him a line, but I agree with the others, you need to play one and get your own feelings for one.

Roger

He does! His guitar is the reason I thought I wanted one. Sounds and feels great.  But then again when I played it I couldn’t see the price tag. smile

I played one because I also wanted an indestructible guitar.  A friend who was with me said "what would you do with an indestructible 2500 dollar guitar?" The point he was bringing up is that if I drop that kind of cheddah on an axe, I'm going to treat it well. I wouldn't toss a guitar that expensive in the back of my car for a week even if it was heat proof; I'm too careful with instruments.

At first I liked the sound. Then I played it next to a few other instruments in the same price range. You're giving up a ton of tone quality for durability. It sounded thin and underwhelming.

The store also had a real purty Taylor 514ce that I played. It totally spoke to me. So I got that instead.

May I offer a theory critique?

It would work insofar as it would make the signal hotter but the tone may not be what you’re accustomed to.  So I think the utility would be pretty limited if you’re trying to replicate a stage tone.  If you’re just trying to have a guitar loud enough to practice on without respect for tone, I bet it would work.

Do you have samples of the guitar/voice stuff?

Tell us more about your rig. Guitar direct to amp dry, no processing? Same for Vox?

Hi baldguitardude, (dad?). Lol.  2nd attempt at a reply so hopefully this one will post. Looking at you tube vids and people have done modern songs and replaced the c chord with something else, I am not experienced or know enough about guitar yet to be able to do this. There are not many song books for the merlin and the ones there are are so boring and most of the songs online are religious folk Irish or traditional. Someone needs to make a song book with modern tunes. They would make a fortune!   So basically looking for resources for songs for the merlin d more modern or how to replace the c chord?

Can you link to a song you're trying to do this with? I can help.

welcome to Chordie! I became familiar with this instrument upon reading your post. Looks fun!

Are you looking to transpose the song to a new key, or are you looking for substitute chords when a C is called for? Just want to be sure I understand the question.
