After many months of practice I feel very comfortable playing songs with chords G, C and D.  I play mostly country and church songs. I can make my chord changes pretty fast, clean and without looking at my fingers.  My question is how can I find more songs that use only these 3 chords.  I know I should be learning and practicing with different chords and I will, but I would first like to get really good with say a dozen songs that use these 3 chords.  In the song section of the forum is there a way to search for songs that only have these 3 chords in them?  Anyone have suggestions on country or church songs with just these 3 chords?

Thanks,
Tony

Steve, I'm the Tony that Pix referred to.  I live in the same state as Pix and I did borrow his files and his knowledge to do a full set up on my CheapO $100 guitar.  When I was finished I had a guitar that plays easier, sounds better, holds it's tune and I enjoy it.  I have since added a bone saddle to this same guitar and I did that myself.  The bone saddle adds a different ring or tone that's hard to explain but to me sounds really good.  I'm a new player, but I let a man at the "Guitar Center Store" play my guitar and it was amazing to hear the music he made with my guitar.

I wish you the best in working on yours.

Tony

Bone saddle update.  It's been 3 full days since I installed my bone saddle.  I have had to adjust my strings a touch each day as they settle in.  I want to tell anyone who is considering getting a bone saddle to JUST DO IT.  My cheapO guitar sounds so much better.  Don't get me wrong, it isn't just the saddle that got this guitar to sound good. I had to adjust the action, change the strings, lower the nut and saddle.  Thank you to PIX, for all his help and guidance my guitar sounded good.  NOW my guitar sounds great.  This one change by itself made a huge difference the ring and tone I hear.  It sounds like a totally different guitar for the better.  I will never go back to plastic.  This is truly very worthwhile investment in time and money to make a guitar sound better.

Bone saddle update DAY 2.  Today I had more time to play and I found that my stings had settled into the bone saddle and I need to tighten them up a bit to get back in tune.  After playing for another 1/2hr I am liking what I hear.  The bone saddle help give a ring to the notes on the 1,2,3 strings for sure.  It's not as noticeable a change from the plastic saddle on the 4,5,6 strings.  All in all I glad I made the change.  I still have the plastic saddle so I can always switch back if I ever decide I want to.  For now the bone saddle is a keeper.

I installed my bone saddle.  Still not sure if it makes a difference.  I only played the guitar about 15 minutes after the install and then I had to take a brake OR ELSE,,,  You married guys know what I'm talking about.  We just got home from being away for 6 days and don't I have anything better to do then screw with that thing????

Anyway I took a couple of photos.

The bone saddle is under the strings and the plastic saddle is sitting on top of the bridge.  Remember this started out as just a flat piece of bone with no groves, notches or slants in it.  I used a Dremel tool to do most of the cutting and shaping.
I will keep playing and let you know more later.

I hope this works so you can see the pictures.

I went with Elixir polyweb extra light 010 - 047  I'm not very experienced but these strings are easy on the fingers and sound good.  They are a bit pricey.

Jecllini, I surely will post my results.  I love working with my hands.  I make my own knives, gun stocks, pistol grips and such so I am familiar with working with finishing tools.  I set up my action on my guitar with great results, thanks to Pix for his guidance and videos.  I will be searching YouTube for saddle info.

I was able to get a blank bone saddle at Sam Ash guitars in Charlotte, NC.  When I say blank I mean it's just a rectangle of bone and I have to shape and carve it.  It was $10 plus tax.  I give it a go and report back when I get if finished.

I agree Doug.  Also I would trust buying from a member of Chordie before buying from Craigslist or Ebay.  In both the pen group and shaving group that I belong to they limit selling post to members who have 25 or more post and are not in the business.  It's for individuals not companies.  We have very few problems doing it that way.  I would like to see it given a try here.

Hey Tony the problem with getting from ebay isn't really whether or not they are real but the quality of the bone. It needs to have a consistent density so that all the vibrations/sound is transfered evenly... Cheap saddles can have hard spots causing some strings to ring louder or soft spots causing some strings to not really get heard. This can really mess with your overall tone. Also the kind of bone... Camel, cow, buffalo, etc... The finer aspects of saddle/nut/pin materials can get almost as complex as tonewood discussions smile

There goes my idea of going to the butcher shop and getting a couple of large rib bones and making my own saddle.  Thanks for the reply Pix.  I will stick with someone I can trust and pay the higher price.

I am new to Chordie, but I notice there isn't a dedicated selling and trading forum.  I belong to a couple of other forums www.shavemyface.com and the http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/.  They have Selling and Trading forums and they work well with members selling to fellow members.  If I have a fountain that I no longer use, I can sell or trade it to a member for something he has.  Wouldn't that work well here?  Why hasn't a selling / trading forum been started on Chordie?

Any suggestions on where to order one on-line?  I live the boon docks and we don't have any guitar stores for about 40 miles.  I'm familiar with changing a saddle and nut.

I'm sure your new guitar will serve you well.  You know my story about my CheapO guitar.  Once I got the action adjusted and the strings changed, this baby makes some sweet sounds ( at least when it's played by an experienced player ).  I went with Elixir polyweb extra light 010 - 047 strings and they really sound great.  Your hubby isn't the only guy out there who has a thing for Jewel....  Play on...

I'm glad my wife doesn't read this forum.  She was happy with her $50 gift card and breakfast in bed.

Did you run this NEWS FLASH by SWMBO?  I think you may want to consider the previous pick advice first.

"She Who Must Be Obeyed" for those who don't know what SWMBO means.

Welcome to the forum MKM-son.  I've heard your mom sing on YouTube and I think if you play your cards right you could be her lead guitar when she wins "America's Got Talent."  It's great to see that you are all so close.  A family that plays together, stays together.

I'm far from an expert and I have been playing less time then you have, but I am a geek / nerd and did tons of Internet research on this very subject.  My guitar cost $100 so it isn't much more expensive than yours.  This is what I found, and I'm lucky that I learned this early.  Your guitars setup is so important to how it plays and sounds.  I had to spend a couple of weeks working on getting my setup right.  Pix, a member of Chordie gave me step by step instructions on how to do it.  I started by adjusting my neck with the tension nut so it was level.  I got new strings, I filed my nut groves, I lowered my bridge, I cleaned my frets.  What a difference it makes in how the guitar sounds.  I have also taken my guitar to the same store "The Guitar Center" ( Ilove that place ) and a man there played MY guitar for me and blew me away with how it sounds and plays.  I am convinced that I don't need a more expensive guitar until I get much better.  I believe the guitars you played at the store are set up right and that makes a big difference.  I'm sure when you get really good the quality of the wood and workmenship will show up, but I think for a beginner, a decent guitar with the proper set up is the way to go.

I haven't been a member of Chordie for long but in the little time that I have been a member I recognize you as an asset to this forum and deserving for a MOD position.  I'm sure you will do great.

I was checking out Craigslist and there is a man who is selling custom made Cigar Box Guitars.  I Googled Cigar Box Guitar and they really look interesting.  Does anyone have experience making and playing these guitars?

Thanks
Tony

Hi Nornie, welcome to Chordie.  I can honestly say if it wasn't for Chordie I most likely wouldn't be still learning to play guitar today.  I have been learning for exactly 3 months and the Chordie members are the most helpful, kind group of folks I have come in contact with.  If it wasn't for the Chordie help I have gotten my guitar would be taking up space in the closet.

I know a man who played acoustic for many years and he recently switched to an electric guitar for the exact reason you state.  With the electric he has options for tones and sounds that can't be made on an acoustic.  I've only been playing acoustic for a couple of months. I have no idea on the limitations of the acoustic guitar, but it makes sense that the electric guitar can give you more options.

I don't have any trouble yet with dropping my pick because I still don't strum fast enough.  However I have tried a thumb pick and I like it.  I'm getting used to using it and it won't fall off your thumb.

Today I was practicing playing Amazing Grace.  My wife of 40 years told me that my playing sounded very good.  She continued to say that my singing sucks, but I am playing the song on the guitar much better.  I sort of think of that as progress....

Hi, and welcome to Chordie.  I am also an AARP card carrying member at 63 years old.  I have only been learning to play the guitar since Jan of 2010.  The first thing I did was change my strings to light strings on the suggestions from these great people at Chordie.  It really helps you to fret with less pressure on your fingers when using light strings.  I have Elixir Polyweb Extra Light .010 / .047 on my guitar now.
