Hello, its me again,
If anyone can figure out the chords for this it would be appreciated. Secondly, would this type of guitar playing be considered Bluegrass rythmn guitar and how would I go about learning how to play like this?

Hello, its me again,
If anyone can figure out the chords for this it would be appreciated. Secondly, would this type of guitar playing be considered Bluegrass rythmn guitar and how would I go about learning how to play like this?
If you are a beginner like me or a seasoned pro like some, I was just wondering what tunes you are working on right now? Or what songs do you really like to play?
I have been practicing the beginners "F" chord. You know, the "C" shaped, non-barred variation.
Been working through a few Old 97's songs like "The New Kid", "The Magician" and "Curtain Calls".
Can anyone explain in simple terms what this guy is doing here as far a walking up and down?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPtRCm2OkgA
The chords are D , C , Em, G
Thanks!
*bump*
Thanks for all of your help.
Back when I was taking lessons my teacher told me NOT to watch that video but watch and learn this guy covering it instead...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ah_0ZxryRd0
His strumming pattern seems a lot easier to master. Does anyone have a clue what it is?
D D U D U D U ??
What songs have you become proficient at mekidsmom? I recall you being a newbie around the same time I started and was just wondering what songs you have mastered.
Ever since I learned my open chords I have been trying to nail this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcR4Y1ik6rg
I know the chords well enough and can make the changes from Am to C to G to D to Em but at my own speed. In the inro of this video he is playing G, D , Em, C ..at NASCAR speed. What kind of srumming pattern is this? It looks like he is using more of his wrist than the up and down arm pendullum motion I was taught.
Another problem I am having is the singing. I can't match the speed of my words to the speed or rhythmn of the playing. Is this song too difficult for a beginner? I picked it because it has the chords I know but it doesn't seem to be as easy as something like "Who'll Stop the Rain".
Any help, tips, tricks and advice would be appreciated.
Hello,
Being the #1 Rhett Miller fan on this board I thought I would pass along what he has been putting up on youtube. The really cool thing is that he is talking about playing guitar! Enjoy!!

Is it possible to learn how to play or improve your playing by by trying to play what you hear on the radio?
There are times when I am driving and I hear a song and I think of the strum pattern or the rhythmn of the song and try to duplicate the sound on my guitar.
Sometimes I feel like I use the same old strum pattern all the time. I guess at the very least listening to songs on the radio or iPod playlist can get me to think about different rythmns or harmonies.
Thank you
What do you mean by "movable" chord? How is it A and E?
I know this is basic music theory but I just do not get it.
Please take a look at this youtube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCcRy7pXXXQ
During the intro where he is telling the story what chord is he playing? It looks like a D being played on the 4th and 8th frets with a capo on the 2nd fret. Is that right?
No offense taken at all!
At least SouthPaw41L is a fan of Rhett Miller!
I wish there was guitar forum out there somewhere that specialized in the guitar style of Rhett Miller. I have issues, yes I know.
I can actually play THIS song. Its called "Designs on you". But I wish I could figure out the little things he does throughout the song to make it pop. Again, I wish I could learn and discuss with others the bits and pieces and break down his guitar work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwRcWa75 … re=related
Because I have issues and cannot stop I wanted to share this amusing clip where he forgets the words to "Timebomb". Possibly hilarious to me only....the obsessed Rhett Miller fan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zBJ7it926U
Also, I just wanted to add that Rhett Miller is not the lead guitar player of the Old 97's. Ken Bethea plays lead and does all those really hard note by note riffy type things. Rhett is basically a rythmn guitar player and I am amazed when I see him doing 97's songs solo acoustic like this. Suffice to say, he is the guitar player I want to be.
After seeing Rhett Miller of the Old 97's play solo acoustic live I was amazed that one person could produce the same type of high energy that the entire band does.
Rhett Miller is my guitar inspiration. I have only been learning for about a little over a year and a half and I have a long way to go.
I come to this forum seeking advice and help(a lot). I do not know any other guitar players to bounce things off so it is helpful to toss a question or two out here and read the kind words of reply.
If you could please, watch this video and help me break down what he is doing. His strumming pattern is crazy to me but to more advanced players it may not seem so. Are there any little tricks he is doing to get that sound besides playing like a madman? Your thoughts and experienced guitar playing advice is appreciated.
Hello,
I am looking for some help with the chords for "Drowning in the Days" by The Old 97's from the album Hitchhike to Rhome. The problem is I cannot find the chords anywhere online and my brain is too tiny to figure them out for myself. If anyone can assist me with this that would be fantastic. Thank you.
In case you don't know, The Old 97's are an alternative country band from Dallas, Texas. Their musical style has gotten less twangy country since this was released in 1994. More recently, their music has been featured in a number of hit movies and TV series, including The Break-Up ("Salome", "Melt Show", "Timebomb"), Ed ("Question", "King of All the World"), Scrubs ("Question"), and Veronica Mars ("Adelaide", "Four-Leaf Clover").
Just an update, I did not buy a new guitar this weekend.
I did stop by my local shop and he showed me an acoustic/electric Garrison that was three times more expensive than the Yamaha at Guitar Center. I wasn't totally blown away with it. The color was nice but it felt heavy and the sound was kind of dull. I did enjoy messing around with it hooked up to an amp. I discovered that if your finger positioning is a wee bit off when strumming a chord the amp will pick it right up.
Now I have some more things to think about. I could get an inexpensive starter that I will outgrow or save some cash to upgrade to an acoustic/electric. One of the major selling points of the local shop is that he will stand by what he sells and back it 100% (plus, re-stringing it is free. I just pay for strings). Naturally he is against the larger chains that are trying to drive the little guys out of business...but thats business.
Hi!
Guitar Center is having a Memorial Day SALE. This might be a great(and cheap)opportunity for me to buy a new guitar. They have the Yamaha F335 for $99(lists at $350). I feel like I have outgrown my student Johnson JG-100. I may outgrow the Yamaha a year from now but for $99 I can get a better sounding guitar at a low price. The reviews I have read(and seen on youtube) for the F335 are pretty favorable. As always, any opinions from the friendly Chordie people out there would be appreciated. Thank you.
The place I bought my guitar from will restring it for free. The only cost is the price of the strings. The other day I dropped it off and asked them to put Martin Lights on it. When I picked it up I discovered it had Extra Lights put on(he gave me my old strings back in the Extra Lights package).
Comparing the Light and Extra Light packaging here is the difference on each set:
Lights
E- 1st .012
B- 2nd .016
G- 3rd .025
D- 4th .032
A- 5th .042
E- 6th .054
Extra Lights
E- 1st .010
B- 2nd .014
G- 3rd .023
D- 4th .030
A- 5th .039
E- 6th .047
What do these sizes actually mean? Does it matter? Should I just shut up and play?
As a newbie guitar player/learner I am always looking up chords to all different types of songs that I like. I have a 3 ring binder overflowing with printouts from Chordie and other sites. The problem is that I just learn a part of the song move on to another song. I do not work on getting just one (or even three) songs 100% accurate before moving on. Is anyone else like this? Any advice or stories of your own to share? Thanks!
Hi all,
I have been learning to play acoustic guitar since January 2009. I own a Johnson JG-100. It was $70 and was meant to be a beginner (student) guitar. Yesterday I went to Guitar Center and played with some of the more expensive Gibsons and Martins. They sounded amazing! My playing is not good but the more expensive guitars produce such an incredible sound. Why is that? Is it the strings or the overall construction of the guitar? Its kind of a let down when I get home and can not get the same sound out of my cheaper guitar. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Hello,
Awhile ago I got the chords for this song here:
http://www.hitbyatrain.com/discography/ … natius.txt
I was just starting out and this was a good way to sharpen my C chord.
Later on I found this guy who did a cover for it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jATxG7ytkUI
I was never really happy playing this song. I could not seem to get it sounding right.
Yesterday I stumbled onto a video of Rhett Miller (of the Old 97's) playing St.Ignatius and it inspired me to give it another go.
http://web.me.com/drdavidwelsh/Old_97s_ … eater.html
Is the strum pattern Rhett Miller playing different from the other guy’s?
Is it possible for a beginner guitar player to do the “little tricks" Rhett Miller is doing?
Is it possible for anyone here to explain the “little tricks" (other than he has been at it for 20 plus years).
In the beginning of the video he is playing softly and his singing is carrying the tune. This is something I have been trying to master. Any suggestions?
After he sings, “I can't find the words to make it right, to make it right." He slides his hand down the neck of the guitar. What chord does he play? I think it adds so much to the performance.
The chords are basically G, C, D and Em. Is he throwing any others in there?
I really like the solo he does. Its made up of simple chords and doesn't look too difficult. I know I can do it. Does it have to come from the heart as well?
When he gets to, “Someday when we're older, deep in loneliness, Things we said today won't matter, no one could care less “ it looks like he is plucking some strings. Again, is this too advanced for a beginner? How do you do it?
Thanks so much for your help!
Thank you Russell.
I wrote "If I wasn't so lazy I could figure out what the chords are." What I should have said was if I wasn't so dumb and lazy I could figure out what the chords are. Could someone break down the order that his is playing each chord? I tried putting the video on pause and going through it slow. I can't figure out what chords he is doing just by looking at his hand. Thanks again.
Hello,
I just stumbled over this on YouTube. Its an in studio performance with Rhett Miller of the Old 97's. There are a lot of good close ups of his finger placement of the chords being played. If I wasn't so lazy I could figure out what the chords are. Can somebody please help me? It looks(and sounds) like its pretty easy to play. Thanks so much.
Hello!
Is anyone familiar with the song "Misirlou" popularized by Dick Dale and his Del-Tones. It is also know as the theme to "Pulp Fiction" You can see how amazing Dick Dale was here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIU0RMV_II8
I would like to learn this type of stuff but I have only been at the acoustic steel string for nine months. It is kind of fun to mess around and play with new things though.
There is an Old 97's song called "Dance with Me". Please give a listen to it here:
http://www.myspace.com/theold97s
Ken Bethea is the Old 97's lead guitar and he is incredible. "Dance with Me" has a sound very similar to"Misirlou". The intro and main chords are Am and E. I pretty much have this down (yes, I am that good..just kidding).
"Dance with Me" chords:
http://chordie.com/chord.pere/www.guita … 70542.html
I found chords to "Misirlue" here:
http://www.emuzeki.com/Tablature/MisirluChords.htm
I also found that if I strum E then slide down a fret then another it produces a kind of Johnny Rivers "Secret Agent Man" sound. This is the stuff I am jazzed up about right now and if anyone knows any others I could try please let me know.
I am having trouble reading TABs. Chords are a lot easier for me to figure out. Are there any secrets to reading TABs and playing them fast? I know I have a long way to go before I even come close to sounding like Dick Dale, The Ventures or even Agent Orange or The Dead Kennedys ...but I am having fun just trying to make a sound.
I have been at it for nine months now. My advice:
Play what you like. Play what you want to play. Do you have a favorite band? Try looking for some easy songs by your favorite band.
There is a question at the end of this rant. Thank you for your patience.
As I have mentioned before I was taking lessons from January until July of this year. My main intention was to learn enough about the guitar to be able to pick it up and play at the campfire this summer. My lessons stated out by learning the strings and how to read notes by plucking out little tunes like "Jingle Bells" and "Aura Lee". That was all well and good. What kind of fool would I be if I didn't take advantage of a little "music theory" while learning how to play. The thing is I wanted to learn chords so I could play the songs I wanted to play. I picked songs like "Leaving on a Jet Plane", "I Fought the Law" and "Ring of Fire" so I could learn basic chords. I really wanted to learn "Won't Be Home" by The Old 97's and practiced that along with the others. I got the A chord down for songs like "The Bucket" by Kings of Leon and "Stumble In" by Sleepercar. During that time I was doing the basic down strum when one day it clicked and I began to experiment with a faster up and down strum. At this point I knew the chords and could make my changes fast enough. By July I was strumming out more Old 97's tunes for my family at the campfire. I have been adding more Old 97's songs to my list. Now I can play "Weightless", "Victoria", Designs on You" and "Our Love" by Rhett Miller(lead singer of the Old 97's). By the way, if you have never heard of any of these songs, you should check them out.
I decided to have a look at Justin’s Beginner guitar course for structured way of learning instead of the sort of backwards way I learned. I am a little embarrassed to say that I did not know the E chord and I like that he suggests keeping your first finger on the 3rd string to help you change chords faster. After going over D, A and E he gives you two easy songs to learn. With the song “Peggy Sue" he has you do all down strums.
Here comes the question, can I play this strumming up and down?
Howdy all,
I own a Johnson JG-100 student guitar with Martin extra light strings. I got it for Christmas and started lessons in January of 09. I stopped my lessons in July and may or may not go back in September. I have never played guitar before. My basic goal in January was to learn about it well enough to be able to pick it up and strum a few songs. I have accomplished that. I know some basic chords and can play a handful of tunes by my favorite band The Old 97’s. But of course I would like to learn more.
If I go back to lessons my instructor can continue on with teaching music theory(not such a bad thing) plus help me with basic questions and be a supportive coach/trainer.
Anyway, here are the simple questions:
When we play acoustic guitar I understand we are strumming the tune and we are not the lead guitar. Are there any lead acoustic guitar players out there? It seems like it is more satisfying to kick out some chords and sing along to your favorite songs. Later on when I get a lot better can I try to throw in some cool lead guitar tricks to make the tune pop?
Is there a way to play an acoustic guitar soft and quiet but still get vibrant sound? Last night I was trying to play soft as to not wake up the house and found I could hear the pick hitting against the strings sort of muffling the sound. Am I doing something wrong? I would like to try to be the quiet playing guitar at the campfire instead of the loud overpowering guy. Not sure if this is possible.
Am I holding my pick the wrong way? I usually hold it loose but last night I was holding it tight and making a hard connection against the strings. That’s probably wrong. I remember my instructor telling me it should be like a boat going across the water. But again I was going for a soft sound and it just didn’t sound right.
Thanks for listening.
