A few weeks ago, I bought a set of D'Addarios 80/20 and found that I didn't like the sound... it was not warm enough for me. So I did get some Elixirs with the nanoweb coating, and I loved the sound.

However, I have to agree with windrat in that mine too discoloured around the high use areas after a very short time, and these are supposed to last longer.

Ideally, I still haven't found the sound of the strings that originally came with my guitar, but then again, I've only tried 2 brands.  This post is giving me LOTS of info....

Roger:  Yes, I do have a capo, and

alvee: I am playing G, D, A7, etc....

So, I will try to capo it on the second, or wherever it may take me smile

Russell:  I'm afraid I don't know anything about tuning to another key... and to be perfectly honest, I have broken a couple of strings (when restringing) because I don't know by ear what the notes are supposed to sound like, and I've wound too tightly.. I DO look forward to the day when I can tune to a recording, or even another guitarist, but right now, I'm still a newbie at this.

Thanks all!  I believe I now have information to help me play along with more songs in my songbook. big_smile

Hi Everyone.

The other day, I put my headphones on to play along with "Peaceful Easy Feeling" by the Eagles.

This may be a really silly question, but bear with me, I am a bit confused..
I noticed right away that my guitar did not sound the same as the recording. I mean, I wasn't expecting it to sound exactly like the recording, but this was so "off" that it sounded like I was off tune..

Can anyone explain this to me, if it's explainable? Is this normal? Is there something wrong with the way I'm tuning my guitar?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Nela.

I play acoustic guitar, and the D'Addarios that I have are extra light 80/20 bronze (brass).

By the way, I was pleasantly surprised at the price when I picked them up, but like I said, didn't like the sound.  The Elixirs, however, which I did like the sound, are three times the price, but I figured it's worth the price if I like the sound coming out of my guitar.

I just figured I'm either going to use them, or give them away... no sense in keeping them if I have no intention of using them.

Hi Everyone.

A few months ago, while buying and changing my first set of strings on my acoustic guitar, I learned that not all strings sound the same. I bought some D'Addario 80/20 and replaced the whole set, only to be unhappy with the sound.

So I replaced these with Elixir (nanoweb coating) and liked the sound.  However, it's time to change my strings again (I'm going by sound and not by time... as well as the fact that my B, G and D strings have lost their coating (?) around the 3rd fret area).

So, my question is, having bought 2 sets of D'Addarios the first time around, I still have a whole set. What would happen if I replaced the B, G and D strings with the new d'Addarios, and left the other Elixirs?  Is this a really bad idea? Should I just give away my D'Addarios and stick to a full set of Elixirs?

Thanks for any advice on this, All.

Southpaw: Thanks for the article. Incidentally, when I first got my capo and wanted to learn about it, I came across this article. It didn't make sense to me then.  What I find great about this site (or any forum, really) is that I can ask my question the way I want to ask it, and keep asking till I'm 100% clear, right? wink

Like jerome so wonderfully understood where my confusion came from... the wording. (thank you, jerome).

I love it when I FINALLY get it! And, as I said before, thanks to all you amazing guitar players sharing your knowledge with me, I now get it too!!

Okay, I finally got it!

Southpaw, Jerome, alvee... and NELA.. BIG THANKS!!!

NELA: You say it was hard to explain, but rest assured that your hard work paid off. I get it.

My confusion was cleared by your explanation on the chord shape with a capo producing a different voicing.  I was thinking that if an E shape is producing a G sound, how can I call it an E?  See what I mean?   I look forward to seeing this chart... I think it will further clear up my muddled mind! smile

I have no musical theory background, so I'm learning all of this thanks to all the great teachers here!

I understand this: E to D, +3 semitones, G to F.  Got that!  That takes care of the transposing feature. Great.

What I don't understand is how do I know where to put the capo?

Say I put the Capo on the 3rd fret.  Now which chords do I play? If the song calls for E to D (first 2 chords, for the sake of an example), then a capo on the 3rd fret, what do I play?

Thanks, again, for any info... so far, I'm learning something new every day. And that's good!

Hello all.

I want to play the song "Don't You Forget About Me", this version here from Chordie: http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/stuff … tMe.chopro

However, it's a bit too low for me to sing.  Now, I know by transposing it, I can raise the pitch to one that I can sing.

This is where my question comes in.  By using the transpose feature in Chordie, say if I transpose it by +3 semitones, where do I put my capo?  3rd fret?  (Is it that simple?)

Thanks for any help (as usual!) big_smile

Ken: Would that have been from the MTV Acoustic series they had a while back?  I must check that out! smile

Hi Everyone.

I just got a new metronome, and I am LOVING the progress. (Not to mention I just had the action adjusted on my guitar, and all I can say is WOW!!! Had I known sooner...)

Okay, so when I practice some of my favorite songs, I always slow down the metronome to a rate that I can keep up with, and gradually pick up the speed. My question is there anywhere I can find the actual BPM for any original song? I am now going "by ear", according to what speed it sounds right to me, as well as the original recording, but is there any way to find out what the actual speed is?

(I might add, sometimes I play around with the speeds of songs, say, playing "Summer of '69" in a slowed down style is fun. smile

Anybody?

Thanks!

Hi everyone.

I need some opinions from you folks:

My guitar strap attaches at the top of the neck. I was wondering, can I safely add a button (sorry, don't know what it's called) to my guitar near the body (not me, but get it professionally done), or would it be a bad idea?

Thanks,
Anastasia

Ken, am I to understand that if I transpose a song by 5, that it will give me the chord shapes without a capo on the 5th fret?

Also, if I print up a chord sheet for a song, and it tells me to put a capo on the 5th fret, I can still play the chords that are showing, say the A shape with the capo on the 5th fret, and I will get the proper sound, which is not necessarily an A?

(I hope I'm not confusing you.)

thank you thank you thank you!  Quite an informative site for me!!! Did I say thank you? smile

Also, one last question: regarding the key of, if you play chords on a guitar without any capo, what key is the guitar in? (Does that make sense?)

Thanks!!!!!

Thank you so much for the lesson on the capo. I imagine because I don't know anything about music theory, that's why it doesn't make sense to me.

For instance, Ken, you suggested that I transpose chords; I have no clue where or how to do that. So that's the limit of my knowledge.

Also, for example, the song "Love is Free" by Sheryl Crow tells me Capo 5. Now when I play the chords A, Bm, E, (etc), the song does not sound right. That is probably because I am now in a different key, right? So that is why I don't understand it, because I don't know what key I should be in.

Anyway, if it's not too much trouble, can someone explain? Otherwise, I may have to take some music lessons, smile

Thanks All very much. (PS:  I have been practicing steadily for 5 1/2 months, and I can't believe the improvement!!!)

Hi everyone.

I noticed that when I put a capo on certain frets, the chords are no longer the same.  Do I need to know something about music before delving into the capo world?

For instance, I have the song "New Shoes" by Paolo Nutini,  which has the capo on the first fret -- no problem there.  However, "Bubbly" by Colbie Caillat sounds completely different once I've capo-ed it, and ditto for "Love is Free" by Sheryl Crow.  They both sound like the chords are no longer the right ones.

Can anyone explain this to me?

Thanks,
anastasia

You know what? I figured it out.. it's only because I am still new at this, and I haven't developed any of my own "rhythms", you know what I mean? I am still focussing on chords here, and my strumming is still a simple one-strum pattern. (This is me again, getting waaaaaaaay ahead of myself!)

And by the way, no, I will NOT quit.  This weekend, I started playing "Take it Easy" by the Eagles, and, I am SO getting into it. I will NEVER quit my guitar! smile

Thank you ALL for your wonderful suggestions, and the discussion opened up my eyes.

PS: Did I mention how much I love this site? smile If I did, it's worth mentioning again.

Hi all.

I choose songs that I like in order to practice my guitar playing.  MOST of the time, after I've found the tabs here, and have played it a few times, I have found that a song is not so much fun to play if it's not accompanied by other instruments.

My question is rather a call for suggestions: What songs sound good played solo on acoustic?

(For example: The Kill sounds great acoustically, but the original version, I would never have imagined to play it had I not heard the acoustic version.. (not that I play it... just an example).

Thanks everyone.

Okay, here is my adventure, so that no other newbie will make my mistakes! smile

First of all, I ended up getting the wrong gauge strings for my guitar. I honestly had no clue that there were so many different gauges. (Please, don't all laugh and point like I'm an idiot, because I feel kinda silly right about now.)

At first, I bought mediums, but when I called the store where I bought my guitar, they said that my guitar takes extra light strings (because it's a beginner's guitar pack). I should have gone there originally, but being a little further away, I opted for the closer store.  Anyway, lesson learned (and I certainly got some practice changing guitar strings!!)

Now, onto yet another learning process:  I'm not so crazy about the sound of these strings.

I mean, they're all in tune, but I don't know, I don't like the sound.  I have D'Addario 80/20 Bronze extra lights, and I'd like to know what others enjoy. I'm pretty sure I'll be changing brands again, maybe several times before I'm happy, but I'd like to start off with some advice from you all out there.

Thanks!

PS: I have posted in another category another question about what songs I like to play, so that might help in deciding what type of strings I should have, if that plays any role.

Hi everyone.

I have successfully changed all my strings. smile

However, the strings I got from the store are Earthwood Medium. The guy at the store told me they are the best strings. When I took the first one out, it seemed to feel thicker. I checked it against my existing one, and sure enough, slightly thicker.

My question is, if my guitar originally came with medium lights, should I stick to medium lights? I read somewhere that one size up doesn't matter.

I need advice.

Thanks!
