Hello all,

Stange one and I guess I know already what the answer will be but:-

Does anyone here think that taking proper lessons from a qualified guitar teacher would make huge differences to a novice like me's guitar playing abilities and technique??

I think I know the answer will be "Well DUH!!" but hoping someone says "teach yourself" so I don't have to pay money lol

Currently my guitars are fitted with Rotosound Purples (Medium-Heavy Gauge) strings.

  E       A       D        G     B    e
54w    44w   34w    26w   17  13

Once my fingers have gotten used to these I'll probably give the Greys (Heavy Gauge) strings a try. Only going up so far in an attempt to increase the strength of my fingers on bends and to experiment with the tones on different gauges

just a quickie question - when my guitar is at a volume above 1 on my amp it gets terrible feedback when i'm not dampening the strings but it only seems to be coming from the A string. Anyone have any idea's how I can best go about eliminating it?

Hi all, great thread too, i've often wondered this myself but never thought to ask.

As for myself i'm a former Medic in Her Majesty's Royal Air Force, did myself 4 1/2 years and left to pursue a life with less conflict. Since then i've worked as a legal secretary, broadband technician and i'm currently working in a call centre Mon-Fri 9am-5pm and working in nursing homes most weekends through a friends agency. Just applied for jobs as the following(Bear in mind what i said about less conflict):-

Prison officer
Police officer
Police Community Support Officer
Fireman

and i'm also re-sitting my mathematics GCSE in order to rejoin the Royal Air Force as an Avionics Technician. Also in the next month or so i'm hoping to join the Royal Auxillary Air Force on 602(I think) Squadron based up at RAF Leuchars (near Dundee, Scotland) who are mainly an Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. As much as I hated the conflict, I love helping people and what better place than Get shot at for oil-istan...or London...actually its SAFER in Get shot at for oil-istan...

I know mate, got it in a one-er

However its PC gone mad my friend. People are so blind now that they practically need their asses wiped for them! Saying that a fair few politicians probably do expect that

My Epi LP HAD a more bluesy rock sound until I replaced the pickups, heavy strings, lots of distortion - now alot more metal

Personally I prefer the feel of my LP to my SG for some reason but my first 3 guitars were based on the LP design so I suppose that has alot to do with it

I've not posted any songs i've written because to be honest none of them feel finished, however I agree with the last comment. I personally get up at 5am every morning to go jogging and I think of little lyrics while i'm out. The second I get in, the laptop goes on and I note the lyrics or words and save them in my "Song Idea's" folder. WhenI write a new song theres hundreds of little idea's and one-liners to mish-mash together into something relatively good.

Same applies to guitar ideas. I'll play guitar before and after work and if anything sounds good it gets noted in my "Guitar Idea's" folder.

Hope it helps,

Nathan

Well on all my guitars (electric) I always use Roto Purples.

12, 16, 24, 32, 42, 52

Always sound pretty sweet on them. What im used to though

Well for the soppy stuff they're ok, I am considerably unversed in the intertwining soul mate love fest of doom. Basically i'm a whore with no soul. Good all the same though

I think all my music gets played loud but off top of my head:

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free bird
Avenged Sevenfold - Beast and the Harlot/Afterlife
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Van Halen - Hot for Teacher/Eruption
Foo Fighters - DOA/Learn to Fly
Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit
Trivium - the Crusade, Anthem(We are the Fire)
Atreyu - Blow
Queen - We Will Rock you, Bohemian Rhapsody
Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills, The Trooper
Clapton - Layla
Guns n Roses - Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle
Metallica - Sad but true, Seek and Destroy

Loads more too to be honest but thats just the ones on my mobile phone's SD cards lol

An alternative and straight out of left field is don't play Stairway to Heaven...sorry to disappoint but if Page Himself couldn't hit the solo half the time you probably wont be able to either.

Either do as the guys above have said (and believe me they are usually spot on) and play about 50% of the solo and the rest ad-lib

or go with a different but equally recognisable song - but jesus DO NOT go for Free Bird...Friend of mine had only heard half the song before saying to his friends "Oh this is easy, I can play this" - after a week of letting him boast to people we said "ok then give us a preview and play along to the track" he did and needless to say he was extremely put out when the solo kicked in

Well i've never actually written a full song as yet. Everything is just bits and bobs, odds and sods strewn over reams of paper initially and then later on my PC in a folder marked "Guitar Idea's and Samples"

Currently I just mess about with bits of notes in no particular order to find something that sounds good then when I do find a little lick that sounds good I work out what scale they are in and then work around it from there. At the moment i'm messing around alot to try and sweep pick with some efficiency so I can add that into a solo.

As far as chord progressions are concerned generally I will just mess around with open chords, bar chords and power chords until such a point I develop a good sounding rhythm section - or at least something that sounds good to me. Everything with me is unfortunately a jumbled mess at the moment as i've only been playing just over a year and still learning (saying that someone once told me it doesn't matter how long you've been playing your always learning)

My muse tends to be boredom coupled with hearing a catchy riff in a song or in some theme music on a game or tv show and that makes me start out from there

Oh hell yes, seriously like 3-4 hours every single day for the last year I play my guitar and I try to learn 1 new song every day

Mush, i'd say it depends on the bands you are trying to play along to.

I mean, I started off learning Guns N Roses to death and that was good fun because Slash and Izzy had some pretty inventive stuff. Overall i've learned bits and bobs from lots of bands. I'll give you a list of songs I can play (Been playing just over a year so far) so you should be able to play some of this stuff methinks already then theres maybe a few not your usual style you might want to give a shot.

Guns n Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine, Welcome to the Jungle, Back Off Bitch, whole lotta rosie, November Rain, Rocket Queen, Paradise City, Out ta get me, My michelle, Anything Goes
ACDC - Back in Black, Highway to Hell, Dirty Deeds
Audioslave - Cochise
Ozzy/Sabbath - Crazy Train, Paranoid
Bon Jovi - Living on a prayer, Its my life
Breaking Point - One of a kind
Bullet for my Valentine - Hit the Floor, Cries in Vain
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
Foo Fighters - DOA, Resolve, One by one, Learn to fly, Best of You
Funeral for a friend - Streetcar, Into Oblivion
Iron Maiden - 2 minutes to midnight, The Trooper, Run to the Hills
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile, Purple Haze
Lit - my own worst enemy
Megadeth - Crush Em
Metallica - Enter Sandman, Seek and Destroy, Sad but True, Whiskey in the Jar, I Disappear
Muse - Knights of Cydonia, Stockholme Syndrome, New Born, Time is running out, Hysteria, Plug in Baby
Nirvana - Smells like Teen Spirit, Come as you are
Papa Roach - Between angels and insects, Dead Cell, Last Resort, Blood Brothers
Santana - Smooth
Stereophonics - Dakota, Bartender and the Thief
Van Halen - You Really Got Me, Eruption
Velvet Revolver - Slither
Wolfmother - Joker and the Thief
Trivium - Dying in your Arms, Crusade, Anthem (We are the fire)
Offspring - Pretty Fly (for a white guy), Walla Walla, Million Miles Away, Want you bad
Ataris - Boys of Summer
Steve Vai - Halo Theme tune (Yes I am a geek!)
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Paul Gilbert - Scarified
Linkin Park - Bleed it out
Danzig - Mother
Avenged Sevenfold - Almost Easy, Scream, Critical Acclaim, Bat Country, Beast and the Harlot, Afterlife, A Little Piece of Heaven
A-Team Theme Tune

There you go, theres a few suggestions from the sheets of tabs I have in my folder. Theres others I know too that mates have taught me but i'm sure those above are more than enough to keep you occupied

Originally my inspiration would have to be hearing Slash on Appetite for Destruction.

That got me interested, but the guy who actually got me playing is one of my good friends Besti, who posts on this board too. Taught me pretty much everything I now know and I owe it to him

Jesus Christ i'm only 21 and feeling a little old now lol - saying that, alot of you guys seem to like the same sort of bands - Avenged Sevenfold, ACDC. Guns N Roses, Atreyu etc

ON the subject of guitars everyone's started out on, I've been playing 1 year and i'll list what i've gone through(You'd be surprised!)

Westfield Les Paul (Gold)
Epiphone Les Paul Std (Can't remember the name of the colour scheme)
Epiphone SG (White)
Gibson Les Pail Studio (Cherryburst)
Bell & Head Extreme 'Cassandra' (Red and Black) - this guitar is real 80's! No headstock, 2 single coils and a humbucker and floyd rose trem - plays like crap but looks great
Epiphone Explorer 1958 Korina - just put a deposit down on this.

Kit wise not so exotic - had a Line6 Spider II which I fell out with due to numerous technical faults, now own an Orange Crush 30R which does the trick for now with a Cry Baby Wah Pedal (not bothering with overdrives and effects just yet)

I'm in the same boat mate, I just sit and cover other artists material while i learn.

I cover mainly:- (and here comes the list)

Avenged Sevenfold
Queen
Offspring
Atreyu
Guns n Roses
Jimi Hendrix
Clapton/Cream
AC/DC
Sabbath/Ozzy
Bullet for my Valentine
Danzig
Iron Maiden
Megadeth
Nirvana
Paul Gilbert (bits of - mainly for technique)
Ataris - Boys of Summer
Trivium
Velvet Revolver
Stereophonics
Van Halen
Muse
Papa Roach
Metallica
Lit
Foo Fighters
Bon Jovi

Probably more i cant remember too lol

Rap music - that's it...oh and dance, trance, anything thats purely synthesized and not played with an actual instrument but by composing together a load of sound bytes on a computer software setup

Just wondering has anyone ever heard of them, old rock band (I say old, it was mid eighties/early nineties) with Paul Gilbert on Lead Guitar. Mate of mine just introduced me to a song of theirs "Scarified" and "Technical Difficulties". Jesus christ it makes me wanna give up playing guitar right now listening to the barsteward play!!

Bad enough when your mates introduce you to the likes of speed guitar players Herman Li, Sam Totman, 'Dimebag' Darrell, Synyster Gates, Michael Angelo Batio, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen without listening to Paul Gilbert give a speed picking masterclass...git...

I started off saying "I'd love to be able to play Bon Jovi", did it and moved on to "I'd love to play like Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan" did it and moved on to "I'd love to play like Matt Bellamy", done. Now I have this stupid obsession with those named above as well as Van Halen...is this just a daft phase or am I likely to strive to want to fret-wank at a ferotious pace for the rest of my playing days?

I personally was born in the great year of 1986 on December 7th, thus making me 21 years old. Born in the wonderful industrial town of Middlesbrough, North East England for those not in the know. For anyone who's ever visited, YES the debate does still rage on as to whether or not we are in North Yorkshire, Durham, Cleveland or Teesside. Even the Post Office isn't sure!

I quite like playing "Beast and the Harlot" by Avenged Sevenfold and "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi. I know, total opposite ends of the spectrum but hey

I've just been listening to my playlist on my Ipod and I was listening to a load of lyrics and thought Id ask what some peoples favourite sections of lyrics are. Whether it be 1 line, a verse, a chorus, if it made you chuckle, brings back a memory etc. Let me and everyone else know your favourites. I'll start with a few of my favourites:-

"Steppin' where you fear to tread, Stop, drop and roll - you were DEAD FROM THE GIT-GO!" - From Slipknot's "Spit It Out". however an alternative lyric (as I and my friends interpret it) is "Steppin' where you fear to tread, Stop, drop and roll - you were dead from the Dick Up!" - Makes us chuckle more.

"You're Daddy works in porno, now that mommy's not around" - from Guns n Roses' "My Michelle"

"Crazy, but that's how it goes, Millions of people, living as foes" - from Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train". I think that lyric is quite poignant of the world today, all the war and crime etc.

"Please tell me, please tell me why, the car is in the front yard, and i'm, sleeping with my clothes on, came in through the window, last night, and your gone, gone" - from Lit's "My own worst enemy" which just reminds me of my days in medical training and our drunken nights out and visits to the beach, spending all day on the beach, drinking beer with friends, messing around, throwing the girls in the sea (and duly getting slapped for it) and a BBQ on the beach when it got dark before the tide came in. Happy days when I listen to that song.
