Did anyone enter the challenge?
I did.
Check out 'Alive Underground' at rpm challenge.
I'm still struggling with 'no time...no time...'

Hope you all are well.

Roger, Guitardocphil
I have no idea why you guys are having problems...it must be some settings on your computers because I've had quite a few replys back from folks all over. Can you get on the site at all?
Do you see the pages and choices?

Hey thanks y'all,

gitaardocphil: I don't know what esnipe.com is. check the http.
marcalan: Northern Lights of Labrador is not an original but I love it. I've spent many nights looking at them. thanks for the Dylan reference. Good plug!
Doll: Thanks. you comment on a lot that's listed here. I think there's a bit in common here.

Hi.
On the suggestion of Dan Hemphill (thanks Dan) I've set up a site with my recordings on it...consider it a scrapbook rather than polished...I'm no recording engineer! Just having fun. Comments welcome, good or bad.

I'm blushing!
Thanks very much for the encouraging comments! I'll get the chords posted soon (family activities abound). Don't worry, they're not tricky. I think it was Muddy Waters who said "I don't know but one chord...but I know it REALLY well!".

hey, another work in progress. I've got the chording nearly figured out but still working on the ebb and flow. Stay tuned.

Precious Gift

I was drinking in an old wooden room.
The sign outside said ‘Café’.
An old man and woman in a booth all their own.
I heard the old gentleman say…

Me? I come from the north shore.
I played for the North Shore Kings.
When I was young I carried an axe.
Now I just carry things.
I married a beauty named Molly
I loved her with all of my might
Our kids are all grown,
And Molly she’s gone.
And me? I live all alone.

Oh precious gifts, are smiles from a child.
Oh precious gifts, are gardens grown wild.
Blessings from above, Providence and love.
Oh precious gifts, like a hand for a glove.

The woman there with him smiled softly.
A beauty from a bygone day.
As she warmed her hands on the mug that she held,
I heard the old doll say…

Me? I came here from somewhere.
In search of something profound.
When I was young I turned all their heads
But I wound up just bumming around.
Did I think I would find love?
From the barstools in the Pool Halls of town?
When the laughter had died
And the boys had gone home,
I found I’d  been left all alone.

Oh precious gifts, are smiles from a child.
Oh precious gifts, are gardens grown wild.
Blessings from above, Providence and love.
Oh precious gifts, like a hand for a glove.

I finished my drink and paid off my tab
I thought I’d go hail me a cab.
I tipped my hat to the table where they sat
They looked to one another and said.

I’m so glad that I’ve found you,
In this café where we share cups of tea.
At this the end of our days
We’ve come a long ways.
What we want is just some company.

That’s a precious gift like smiles from a child
A precious gift like gardens grown wild
Blessings from above, Providence and love.
Oh precious gifts, like a hand for a glove.

thanks Roger. I tried it at home and it works fine. For some reason I can't actually get the songs to play on my work unit. Ah well. Also, I didn't know there was a Mt. Snowden in Alaska. Perhaps I will visit one day!

hey thanks all, as I said, it's a work in progress. As soon as it's refined more I'll revisit it. No doubt there will be changes...always is.

Here's a new lyric I've been working on. I haven't got the arrangement yet. Still a work in progress. I see it as a kind of introspective spiritual thing...with the chorus asking the question...

Outside Looking In

I’m on the outside looking in.
I’ve been watching the wind.
I’ve been down on the beaches.
I’ll go there again.
In wondrous amazement I look to the sky,
At the stars up above me,
Questioning ‘why’?

Chorus
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
But do you believe in Heaven Above?
I believe in love.

I’m on the outside looking in.
I’ve been talking to friends.
Not one here among us,
Knows where I’ve been.
In my mind in the morning, and the deep, darkest night.
Drinking in creation,
Until the sweet By and By.

What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
But do you believe in Heaven Above?
I believe in love.

I’m on the outside looking in.
I must be myself.
No good to be someone,
For somebody else.
I’ll try in my lifetime to be true and kind.
Walking through the forest,
Hopeful and blind.

What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
What do you believe in?
I believe in love.
But do you believe in Heaven Above?
I believe in love.

Roger,

First, good on you for doing what you do. It is appreciated.
For my part I was simply getting ready to send the link along to a colleague at work who had been inquiring about my songwriting. I can bring a file of it on a flash drive for her. No problem. It is too bad though that there isn't some single place to showcase all the tunes. What a collection that would be!

Hi,

A few months ago I posted this tune and had it put on the FoC. Is there a way to go back now and hear it? There are so many other great numbers that I'm wondering if there's a way to review past songs at that site?

thanks,

Danspr,

Thanks for the plug! I wrote it about three years ago, recorded it several times in various incarnations. Soon I'll be doing it again, but this time with a little more engineering. I've recently aquired Cubase SE and am fooling with it when there's time...outside family...work...maintenance...argh.

I've checked out the song at FOC but am unable to open the 'comments' field (or the other fields for that matter)...any idea why that would be?

Hey Jets,

Hmmmm. Bon Jovi and I...
Somehow it never occured to me.
But, hey, whatever floats your boat! Perhaps the world needs another rock ballad.

hey, once again, thanks for the kind words. Just so you know, I've posted a version of this song on FOC. There's just me and a flattop and some minor variations in lyric...it's a porch step in this version (I've since settled on 'porch swing' but haven't gotten to record anything lately...still learning).

James,

thanks for your kind words. how are things in Mississippi these days? I spent a couple of years down on the Gulf Coast a little while back. I lived in Ocean Springs and worked up in Pascagoula doing some shipbuilding. Love the music attitudes there. Lived a year on the west bank in New Orleans as well, and most recently (2 years ago) spent 5 months in Daphne, outside Mobile.
Here in Newfoundland we have a good music attitude also. you might want to check out the music industry of Newfoundland and Labrador website for some samples.

Any idea how I would go about getting some home recording attempts online for comments?

thanks,
s.

Thanks badeye. Cape breton, my nearest island neighbour. I just found this forum today so I've nothing more to add at the moment. I do have many more songs though so I'll get them up eventually.

I live on the island of Newfoundland, a place that is suffering from the effects of outward migration and 'brain drain' as the political and economical landscape changes with the collapse of traditional ways of making a living. This is being replaced with offshore oil exploration and development, but this is not bringing the prosperity some had envisioned.
I wrote this song twenty odd years ago and recently added the last verse. Sadly, it is as current now as it was then.
