G'day Pete and welcome to Chordie.
The Fender G-Dec sure has a lot of features and functions, too many for my liking. That is the main reason I sold mine and bought an easier amp to operate. Although the G-Dec may suit you better than it did me, try it out first and make your own mind up.
For backing tracks these days I use an IPad with "garage band" app installed. Works for me.
I'm sure someone will come along soon with better advice, plenty of very knowledgable folks on this site.

G'day folks,
We have a winner. I recieved an e-mail not long after my last post announcing the arrival of the Picks at my place so once I have had a chance to play with, add to, and subtract from the package, I will send it on.

Deadstring, the contents of the package has increased considerably since I last had it. I can take a photo and e-mail to one of the Chordians to post. (Any volunteers?) I am not sure how to post pics although I have been told a hundred times. Old age is my excuse and I am sticking to it.

Zurf,  no peanuts or Bourbon in the package but heaps of other goodies.

Hello folks,
I just got back home today for a week off from work out west. My wife tells me a package turned up here for me a couple of weeks ago so I opened it up and sure enough, there were the Picks Around The World goodies. Havn't had a chance to have a good look through it all, but will do in the next couple of days.
First person to e-mail me requesting the Picks will be the next recipient.
Good luck.

Things did not work out the way we would have liked. My wife's brother slipped away last night. Very sad time in our house. Evidently, the cancer had taken too good a hold on him for the Chemo. to be of much help. He lived for only 2 months after diagnosis. If there is an upside to all this, it is that he was able to say goodbye to everyone before he went. He did this with a great deal of courage and dignity.
R.I.P. Peter.

Hello folks,
Jeff, I have never been an Aussie Rules fan (traitor?) but I am a diehard Rugby League supporter.

Dino, check out on u-tube some of "State of Origin" Rugby League games if you want to see this game at its best.. State of Origin is played ( 3 games) each year between New South Wales and Queensland and believe me, there is no love lost between these two teams.

Hello folks,
since this is a football thread, here in Aus. we are into Rugby League finals football with so called sudden death games being played where winners play winners and losers drop out.
Teams remaining are South Sydney Rabbitohs, Manly Sea Eagles, Canterbury Bulldogs, all from Sydney and the Melbourne Storm, obviously from Melbourne. At this stage the betting agencies are tipping the Bulldogs.
The Brisbane Broncos (my team) have already been knocked out of the competition.
A bit of trivia for you; the South Sydney Rabbitohs team is owned by Russel Crowe, (some of you may have heard of him)
Cheers for now

Hi Nikki and welcome to Chordie.
Sounds to me that you are already hooked on the Mando and having a ball.
You could Google "mandolin cafe" and/or "two finger mandolin chords" for tips. Have a look at u-tube, type in Mandolin and see what pops up. Also read through previous posts here, and have a look in Chordie public song books in the mandolin section, there is heaps of info available.

Enjoy the journey

Howard,  if using double drop D tuning on a 12er, are you tuning all 4 E strings to D?

Pete, good post this one. We sometimes need a reminder on the little things we seem to neglect. I am also an Elixer nano fan in medium lights by the way.

I have an old 1983 model, MIJ Ibanez 12er I've always tuned to standard tuning. A couple of things I do is always use medium light strings, and when I am not going to use it for a while, de-tune it. Just turn the tuners down a turn to release the tension. After you have done this a few times, you find that the tuners almost always end up in the same place so that when you need to tune up again, one turn up gets you almost back in tune and justs needs tweaking. Never tried drop D tuning, might one day just for comparison.
Good comment above from Zurf and BGD.

Thanks for the reply Folks. I spent most of yesterday just chillin out and strumming, finger tips real sore now but I reckon I'll heal.
Amy, fingers crossed for you jobwise. I think you should get the Martin out and get on u-tube again. You will find it lifts your spirits when you are feeling a bit down.

Beamer, ONE EYED DOLL, you are kidding me, makes me want bang my head too.

I think I would enjoy the Skype jam with some of you but 5 pm in eastern USA is around 3 am the day before here and I don't look my best at that time of day. The only time I am playing at that time is if I am still at it from the night before, and generally by then, can't remember chords, words or even my dogs name for that matter.

Cheers for now

Just flew in home today from western Queensland after a month away. No internet service where I am so catching up on the Chordie posts I've missed before the Old Girl gets me to working around the place.
Queensland is just starting into spring and we are already into severe fire danger weather, this promises to be a nasty summer. I don't  know what is going on, last year we had major flooding , this year looks like fires may be the big issue, can't do much about it, just have to deal with it as it happens.

Pete, checked out some of your u-tube vids, you are going great guns, I am envious of you.

Zurf, you crack me up with your to the point comments, keep 'em coming.

Amy, still somewhat quite from you, hope everything is cool on your end.

Jeff (jets60), the pics around the world package is but a memory.

Wayne, great to see back on deck.

Toots, you OK?

Dino, how ya goin?

Beamer, your taste in music?

If I have missed any of the old hands, my apologies, not intentional.

Beamer, thanks for your posts. I really enjoyed the first clip. Notice how big the guitars were.
The second clip was too slow to watch, ah well.

My old school mate, from the sixties, who went on to become my brother in law was diagnosed last week with cancer in the liver, lungs, bowel and adrenal glands. This man lived his whole life in a small country town and never caused anyone harm. He never smoked, drank alcohol or ate food that is considered unhealthy. Up until about two months ago he was still playing squash competitively in senior matches and has a cupboard full of trophies to attest to his prowess in this sport. This all seems so very unfair.
Things aren't looking too good for him at the moment although he started chemo yesterday.
All we can do is hope and pray for him now.

Hello all,
when I first replied to this thread on 19/8/2009, I was 59, turning 60 in a couple of weeks.
Now I am 62 and turning 63 in a couple of weeks. How time gets away on a fellow. Does that now make me a senior, senior member?
Still singing, strumming and loving every minute of the trip.
