I play a Martin "Alteritive X" model that is almost all composite. I love it and would never trade off to anything else..(for now).  I've tried a few rainsong guitars and liked tham a bit, but not enough to buy one. I share your dislike for Ovation, mainly because they sound great through an amp, but crappy without.
I do believe that composites are the future, what with traditional tone woods becoming endangered. What needs to change is the "ego's of the elite". All the old timers who belive that woods are the only TRUE path to tone.

Sorry, soapbox moment....I'll shut up now.

But what I wanted to say, that I like to know more or less the % of using the electric or acoustic guitar to write a song.

When writing a song, its mood inspiration and something that cannot be defined...
Most of the time I write with my acoustic, not the fancy martin but the worthless Epiphone. I then use the Martin to trick it up. Sometimes I feel rebelious, and angry. That  is when the Les Paul comes out for the first stage...When I want the strings to growl instead of whisper.
Like your example, I have writen songs based on other things...I once wrote a blues song based on a trafic light.

Seriously.....:)

while I would never (MARTIN) stoop to endorsing any one (MARTIN) brand over any (MARTIN) other, I must say that (MARTIN) my Martin is the only (MARTIN) guitar that has ever challenged my to do more, play better, and practice harder than any other (MARTIN) brand I own. I wish I could help.. but you have to chose your own (MARTIN).

60% acoustic, 20% electric, 5%base, 5% drums ( Conga and full kit ), and I'm looking at violin for the missing 10% or so....where do I fit?

One thing I've learned the hard way, don''t by an amp without really trying it out. What I mean is..take YOUR guitar to the music store and plug it in to several different amps. This way you know what sound you will get. For example, most fenders do quite well though a peavey, but my les paul sounds weak through one, but punch her through a vintage marshall and well...you get the picture.
Dont worry about wether  your locale music store will allow this...all good ones will.

I love acoustic-electrics...does this make me a heretic or an apostate?

My fist capo was a ball point pen tied on with string, didn't have many features but cost a LOT less than 40 bucks. I can't imagine a capo that I would pay that much for.

Fell free if you want too though....

Ever tried a new tuning? I was in a rut a few years back, and read an article on "DADGAD" or celtic modal tuning. I tried it and spent days finding new chord shapes and scales not possible in standard tuning...in short, broke out of the rut.

Sycamore has a point!!!

The trick is to get out and try lots of guitars.  Don’t be impressed by a brand, stay open minded and let your ear and hands show you the way…but play a lot of guitars!

No two are truely alike!... my best and favorite guitar would get sneers from most based on the brand/model name but at open mike night... it blows minds with the tone and range it gets.

Shop around and play them all!!

I can't see the guitar picture... any hints on what I'm doing wrong?

What martin strings are you using? I use the "SP" type in phosphor bronze and get exellent sound and very good longivity.  (I still can't spell however...oh well)

I've tried the Elixer brand and have been assured that I'm one of a thousand that hates them.

If you are looking for a guitar(martin) of quality in the (martin) $2000 price range, well I have to say(martin) that your options are wide(martin) open and you will have to (martin) look at a lot of (martin) guitars.

Does anyone here have experience with alt tunungs on the guitar? For the last few years I have been using "celtic modal" with some great results! (DADGAD)  My problem is that the cord shapes are easy to find, but naming the resulting chord is beyond me. Any input?

I lean towards Epiphone, good guitars that age well with a descent price. If you are a beginner, shy away from the 'Masterbuit' series and try the base models. Play several however, they all are just a bit different and you just might find the 'one'.

I had a simular problem with my Martin, it developed a slight buzz in 2 strings and the action went downhill about a year or so after I bought it. Part of the problem was humidity, the rest was solved be getting a guitar tech to "tune it up". Total cost...$50.00.   Results, priceless.

Martin Alt-X electric/accustic and a Epiphone Texan.

Are you using a terry cloth towel? Try something more 'lint free'. All cleaners will leave a slight residue, and after a while the cloth will show some effect from this. I use blue shop towels( available from SAMS club for cheap) they are mostly lint free but strong enough to clean the corners and frets without falling apart.

I'm going to go out on a limb a bit... and disagree with every one.

Yes, it is too late to learn guitar...if you want to be a speed metal, groupie-groping guitar God/Hero.

If music maters to you...do it anyway. I'm 47, played a bit when young, learned nothing, and started over at 40. Since then I've developed a bit of style, played in 2 bands and helped cut a CD. In some ways I still suck but, who cares? I'm having fun.

Go for it.

There is no one guitar that will make you sound like Prince.  Look for the one that makes you sound like YOU, only better. Go simple on a first guitar, get a decent amp if you are going electric.Spend the rest on lessons... then you will have a better idea of what you want for your next guitar.

P.S. Don't let any one try to fool you... all of us "older guys" are looking towards the "next" guitar.

Hmmm...5 songs?

If the set goes over well...I'd sneek in an origianal to finish. If it goes normally, I'll serve a nice tomatoe salad with a playfull vinagarette <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_redface.gif" border=0 alt="Embarassed">
