Hi Gang

Sorry for being a bit vague, but I heard a song on the TV today and although I know the song I can't remember what it is,
These are some of the lyrics from the chorus as best I recall them. and it's only a couple of years old

And in my lonely room
I'll be thinking of you
Ah what can I do

Any thoughts?

Hi Ahmad

If I'm having a go at new song, I try to play along with the original song.
I do it until it gets really boring and then I play it and sing it without the original.

At that point it becomes my song and I’ll do it my way. Then Clare has a go at singing it and we end up doing the song her way.

I firmly believe that in doing covers of other peoples songs, we should change them so they become our own. If we didn't, anybody listening could just put on the CD of the original.

Hi Norm

Just to add to the bit about getting your own mic.

My vocalist has her own mic and if we do a gig where mics are provided, she insists on using her own. I thought it was a bit Diva-ish (if there is such a word) but she explained that at some event she had sung at, with mics provided, something had dripped from the mic onto her lips.

I can't even imagine what that must feel like.

On the singing side, Clare still has singing lessons and has learnt a lot from her teacher. It might be worth having a few lessons to point you in the right direction.

Please bear in mind that this comes from someone that plays a guitar, and being a bloke, finds it hard to multitask by singing as well.

That fine, as long as the hosting internet site is still on line with the data file. It's the same as keeping the songs in your songbook. I'm sure there is a case for saying that once you have learnt a song, you don't need it again. But you never know.

Hi gang

There are ofter questions about saving songs found by Chordie or on other internet sites onto your own computer. I thought I would share how I do it.

I found a little program called "Song Sheet" from http://www.dsbsoft.com/index.shtml costing $30. It displays songs in the same way Chordie does. and it saves them in it's own format and as a "Word" file.

When I find a song I want, I save it into My Songbook. From there I click "Edit" and then Highlight and Copy the code in the top box. I then paste that into the Song Sheet editor, make any changes as needed and save the files onto my Hard drive. I've been using it for about a year and it works really well .

Hope this helps

There is a good collection in the public song books ,but you can't beat someone saying "this is the best christmas song all time"
I think I'm asking for a song thats a little off the main stream. Just been having a thrash at "Grandma got run over by a reindeer". I think this is going to be fun

Hi Gang

Yes I know it's only August and the last thing we want to think about is Christmas, but we have been asked to do a few song at the local Christmas Lights turn on.

What would be your favorite Christmas songs for a duo with a female singer and guitarist to do.

Clare wants to do "Rocking around the Christmas tree" and "Santa Baby" and I like Steve Earles "Nothing but a child" so anything upbeat, country or folkey or popish

Any thoughts?

Hi All
Does anyone play this song. If you do, I could do with a bit of help with the chords. I've had a few plays and am getting there, but any help is much appreciated. If you don't know the song you can get a brief taste from this link

Thanks for those.
I think it's a problem. Finding up beat songs for a female singer.
When we first thought about it I remember saying "there must be loads" but remembering them is another story.
The problem isn't just good songs, it's good songs for that last 30 mins in a loud and busy pub where the people are out for a "good time" and want something they know and sends them home feeling happy.
Keep them coming and thanks for taking the time to post. It's really appreciated

Hi All

In getting a set together, we've ended up with a lot of really nice songs that I like playing and Clare Likes singing, but most of them are slow. e.g.

Diamonds and Rust. When you say nothing, Speed of the sound of loneliness.

As nice as these songs are, they aren’t what we need for 11'o'clock on a Saturday night in a lively pub or bar.

Anyone got any thoughts on some more upbeat songs, Folk, country or pop and not to hard to play.

Think along the lines of "Bad Moon Rising" and "The Boxer"

If you want to know a bit more about us and our tastes, have a look at the website

Thanks

Hi Pat
I've been having a go at that song over the past week. When it comes to the instrumental bits I've been fitting in a tune that I only know as "The Windmill" and I think it sounds great. The links below will give you the sheet music and some MP3s to the tune.
Hope this helps

Go down the page to almost the bottom

This is a PDF of the music

Thanks for that.
As passive speakers are quite cheap, I'll try one and see how we get on.

Hi All
I need a bit of help with adding some Foldback monitors. I am playing as half of a duo, me on guitar and Clare singing playing small venues and pubs. We would like to add some monitors to our set up but I have no idea where to start. We use a Carlsbro GRX7 mixer amp, which has 8 inputs, a monitor out bank and also a line out on the back.

Now for the questions

1/ Should I be looking for passive or active speakers

2/ How would they be wired up? ie do the mic and guitar go to the monitors first and then to the amp or do we get out the same mix as the PA is putting out.

3/ Does anyone have a similar setup that works for them as there is a chance that I might upgrade all the kit.

Any help or advice is most welcome.

Thanks
Howard

Hi Rumble Doll
With struming you have a choice, it's either up or down. Try playing along with the track to get the beat. Try singing along, as the words will give you a clue how to play. In the case of Bad Moon Rising , I would go

G Chord  down, down then (up down (quickly)) - D Chord down down - C Chord - down down - Back to G for two downs. etc

Try

http://www.guitarnoise.com

for some help on how to play songs.

Have a go at "Horse with no name" very simple chords so you can focus on the struming.

After that, try any of the "Easy Songs for Beginners Lessons".

Good luck and don't give up
It's not easy playing a guitar BUT but it is worth the effort in the end.

Hi All
We have done a few open mike nights and a couple of gigs where all the equipment was provided. All we had to do was turn up, play and sing. We were asked to do a couple of pubs, but as we have no equipment other than a couple of small practice amps we had to turn them down.
I think I will have to make an investment but have no idea what to buy. (PA, amps, mixer mikes etc)
What equipment would anyone recommend for playing in pubs and small halls. It will also need to be as simple as possible.

At the moment we would need
For Clare
1 x mike

For me
1 x mike
1 x Electro acoustic guitar input
1 x input for a banjo with a small contact transducer fitted

For the future, we may need another mike and a guitar input

Any thoughts? and don't go wild. I have a limited budget

Hi All
If you are in the UK I would recommend Regents in Lemington Spa  www.Guitars.co.uk  I bought my guitar from the shop, but having meet them I'm sure that their service via the internet would be first class.
You could also try  http://www.moondogguitars.com/index.htm  They provide a 14 day money back guarantee including all postage costs if you are not happy with your purchase.

Yes, You play a 6 string banjo as you would play a guitar. The chords are the same.
I thought that my 6 string banjo didn't like the low E string (thickest) so I've replaced it with another high E string (thinest)  Stick to light strings as thicker strings tend to sound dull. I have Ernie Ball extra slinky electric guitar strings on at the moment and it really gives you a good "banjo" sound.
They are fun to play and it's an easy option for a guitar player.

Hi

I just bought a Crafter Semi acoustic (GEA 6) and am very pleased with it. It's really well made and sounds great Try to find a good guitar shop and go and play all the guitars in your price range. You are bound to have a favorite by the time you get to the last one.

Thats my 10p worth

Good Luck
