Stairway to Heaven has a intro acoustic bit and full electric finale. makes it kinda  tough but doesn't stop people trying.

a fresh set of strings often helps with sound. old strings will sound flat.

otherwise a nice action to avoid fret buzz and to make pressing the strings to the frets easier.

Dalesman

Hank Marvin used a tape delay

you may get almost the same effect with a digital delay pedal

he also used quite a lot of vibrato which is vibrating the strings a little as you play the note

but you are right those bass lines in wonderland sound very deep.

ditto apache

my guitar don't sound like that either !

I don't understand

strats have a fairly trebly sound  in comparison to say gibsons but most strats occupy a similar range.

changing the pickups might change the tone but is a fairly major modification

what is that you are trying to play

why does it not sound "right" to you ?

Stairway is a great track but it has been overexposed.

i was playing it to my kids in the car the other day. never heard it before. and yet to be persuaded.

"Singing is almost, either you can sing in key or you can't"

I can sing somes song in key throughout but only after lots of practice. I have to try singing the song higher and lower so that I can sing it in the same key throughout the song

some songs I can't sing because they are too high or low but I've little idea how to change the key so I can sing it

I also have to record the song and listen to it too make sure that I'm not singing it flat.

finally I have to record and listen to make sure that I don't tail off at the end of verses.

i don't know whether these are just "how things are" or whether they can be improved.

has anybody here had singing lessons

were they helpful ?

if you have too many chords it can be a bit repetitive. try adding riffs, licks and some intros/outros. nothing vast but just to make each song distinctive

untimely age

a great showman

his biggest sucess was the Great Rock and Roll swindle

but the bbc showed clips of the double dutch in its obit - and its a better performance.

try moving the thumb wheels underneath the bridge - the bridge should go up (and down).

make sure you know exactly where you started from and move it tiny amounts

hopefully the buzz will disappear

could be a number of reasons

most likely is that the action is too low (the string is not high enough above the frets)

can  normally be corrected without much trouble by some minor adjustment to the bridge. normally a matter of turning a screw to raise the height of the string

but it depends what sort of guitar is it ?

fender type or gibson type

i've got a zoom multi effects

I've also got a distortion pedal  and a  wah.

so I've got everything:)

no actually the point is that  the distortion pedal is the one I use most so I have standalone versions.

boss is good. mines not but you won't go far wrong with a  boss pedal.

bin' teaching my girls to ice skate

not sure that skating and guitar go together but skatings certainly easier with a good tune

'Dancing on Ice' a UK TV programme has been quite fun this year and if you're not in the UK the Winter Olympics just been on hasn't it.

we've had a cold year over in the UK but its not great for skating out doors. the ice  soon melts.  ice skating outside is more popular at Christmas than it used to be.  there some temporary rinks in the City for the Christmas Holidays

I would love to go somewhere like Canada and skate round the park on a clear sunny day.

i just tinker with bits of songs

I get a technique and play loads of songs in that style for a bit

I'm messing around with pick scrapes at the moment. how many songs use pick scrapes. its a very  'punk' thing. turn the distortion up and just run  the side of the pick down the bass string quite fast. perfect intro.

also lots of damping. particularly Superbad by James Brown, possibly "not fade away" by the Stones (a sort of bo diddley thing)

finally i was playing a snow patrol song a while back. think it was 'Run' nice and slow guitar parts there.

old doll

thanks

theres no home position   - start with open notes

try to play finger per fret - so first fret uses first finger, second freet notes palyed with second finger  -   mimimises unecessary hand movements and aids coordination

I'd like to read Eoin Colfers sequel to Hitchhikers. I would also like to read Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer - its also  been highly recomended.

I'm currently reading the Shardlake novels by CJ Samson. They are murder mysteries set in the reign of Henry VIII. The fisrt one is called Dissolution. Followed by Dark Fire and Sovreign. If you like whodunits and a bit of history this  will appeal.

As to all time favorite - impossible to tell but I do like to read HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and its sequels. they improve with time

I think Avril Lavigne is a good idea.

I like Heart  (barracudas a great song) but whether her peers will know it I'm not sure

I found this songbook which seems to have been uploaded by an aspiring young female guitarist (I could be wrong.)

welcome other thoughts

no I'm not a teenage girl

but my daughter is eleven and learning guitar.

its difficult to find songs which seem contemporary. my record collection is new wave, rock classics and singer song writers fromthe 1980s like sheryl crow. lots of singer songwriters but difficult to know which ones have lasted.  I showed her the chords to linger by the cranberries which is a  lovely song. so I wouldn't rule out "classics"

also difficult to find songs with female vocals and strong guitar. yes there are plenty.  I have a stack of songs by singer songwriters in my collection but these are not easy songs to play.  one of the songs we  tried was ONE by U2 because Mary J Blige covered it. it has some fairly easy chords

having a fenale vocal isn't essential but helps. I could teach her Muddy Waters songs. Thats certainly in my vocal range but I don't generally learn soings with high register  tones so I take it that people like to play songs which match their voice.

any suggestions

choose the view print songbook button. Then print using the options available for your browser

I have a 20 year old korean squier and the electrics have become increasingly erratic in recent years

Lots of static when i shift the pots and the sound cuts out or wavers when I touvch the bridge  selector. infact any vibration will upset it

its a nice guitar and is otherwise in very good condition.

I would like to pay to have it fixed but any ideas on what is wrong and what the likely solution is.

that will at least give me a chance of negotiating a sensible deal with the local guitar repair shop

how often are chords taken from the key ?

well, that depends on your music taste

if you have a pop sensibility then most songs are going to stick fairly rigorously to the  expected chords

blues and blues rock have there own variations (eg dominant sevenths and a couple of others)  but don't otherwise depart much from the formulas

however Jazz and many 'experimental'  musicians tend to play fast  and loose with the rules (sometimes in the pursuit of what is a fairly atonal noise).

usually when I mess around with chord progressions I stick to the key. i have sometimes  thought of adding non key chords however in my experience theres plenty of scope for tunesmithing within the key.
