This may be a totally stupid question, but, can you use an electronic tuner to see what key your are singing in?  I am a very bad singer but i have trouble in actually deciding what key to play tunes in. Any one got any tips?

It took me years to master a barre chord  and now i can just play the BM. I found the set up on my new guitar made a lot of difference other wise i think i may have nailed them sooner, who knows! Its not until i got my new guitar i realized how hard the old one was to play.

Hello Roger,
thanks for your reply. I did realise it wasn't chordie's fault, i just wish i was better at working it out sometimes. I don't suppose anyone can tell me what time is ' His friends are more then fond of Robin' played in by Carly Simon can they? I can't seem to get to grips with it.

I sometimes wish on the print out of songs that it would say what time it's played in as in 3/4, 4/4 etc, because sometimes i have trouble with that.

Apart from nailing the barre chords recently, i feel in every other respect i have hit a plateau where i have been at the same level for a long time and not learning anything new. I think that's the trouble when teaching yourself, there's no one to teach you new things and to encourage you. Is there many others that get to this stage and if so how do you chivvy yourself onwards?

Hi Tony,
welcome to chordie. Keep at it. It wasn't until i got my new guitar recently and the man in the shop changed the action on it for me that i realised how hard my 2 previous guitars were to play and i have been trying to teach myself for the last 10 years!! Slow progress is better than no progress at all. As well as chordie i have also found justinguitar videos very helpful.

I play pancho and lefty in the key of G. I have trouble going straight to the BM when playing. Since being able to do the barre chord about 2 months ago i am constantly practicing it but still keep pausing to get my fingers in correct position.

At the moment, it feels like i will never be able to go straight on to the BM from another chord during a song. I have to keep stopping to place fingers correctly. It's going to take a lot of practice. Mind you, i remember thinking about the C chord like that once. It's all very well being able to play the barre chords adequately but its another thing actually playing them properly in a song, if you see what i mean.

I prefer Ian Matthews version

Mine was Amazing grace. It was the first song to learn in my first tuition book in the chords of A D &E.

I would like to say happy thanksgiving to all the lovely people i met when i travelled across the US in May ( but they probably don't come on to Chordie), so i say a big happy thanksgiving to all our American chordians.

P.S i was lucky enough to have my friend and her husband with me and he is a guitarist. He pointed out that the action on the guitar could do with being changed and so they did it there and then and then i told the man in the shop that i was used to extra light strings, so then he changed them as well so bingo, i got my perfect little guitar.

Well my budget was limited to £300 pounds and i eventually picked the Vintage V1300 sunburst. Before that, i have got an old E-Ros and a cheap woodstock, which i bought to practice the barre chords on which i still couldn't do.So, im really pleased with my new one and wish i had got it sooner.

I have had such a good day today i just have to tell someone. ( people who understand ), no guitar players in family.
I bought myself a new guitar today, a vintage, and he altered the action for me, put new extra light strings on and i am so pleased with it, it's exactly what i wanted. That is not all..... practicing on my new guitar i have actually just mastered the barre chords, this very day after having attempted them for years!! hooray, i am so pleased.I feel like celebrating. I just need to practice going on to them from another chord now.
All i need now is a new voice, then i would be truly satisfied!
