Hey Hey!
Where are the songwriters? With 70,000+ members there's
gotta be some! The best writers( those who get paid)
are those who produce under pressure.
They are given a format, a subject, and a deadline.
Ken has provided 2 out of 3...
a great opportunity for practice! I, for one, say
Thanks Ken!

Out Here
1) The sun is risin behind me
There's a full moon shinin on this heartland hyway
I know California is up ahead
I'm tired of the hayfields; tired of the corn
I wanta wake up on the beach some mornin
I'm tired of bein lost, I wanta be found instead.
2) Out here is where my folks all came
Five generations later it's still the same
But my fate isn't sealed till I'm planted in some
field
They came out here lookin for a home
Cedar creek was the end of the roamin
Now they're all dust & bones; all names on pretty
white stones.
cho.) A life time of toil
Hard work every day
Earned them a hole in this rich black soil
And on down in the clay.
3) Out here the air is clean
Out here the grass is green
Out here you won't believe the things that I have
seen
Murder has been done under the prairie sun
There's a corporate finger on the trigger
Of a smoking gun.
Interlude:
From back of beyond, though I could be wrong
I thought I heard a cemetery song.

indeed a sweet piece! many years ago...'72 or '73..
i saw a 4 piece rock band in a tiny south iowa bar
do the William Tell Overture. not only blew me away,
but changed my whole perspective on what a bar band
can accomplish with a little effort. thanks for sharing!

"King of rock and roll" I THINK NOT - he was just an average but OVERLY noisy blues guitarist in fancy dress - OLD CHUCK BERRY WAS THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL GUITARISTS - basic? yes ! but rock and roll most definately - and he sang well and wrote GREAT songs - something Jimi never could do!!!!

hey hey!
what about louis jordan, who was one of chucks major influences... that jumpin cat who many feel was the true pioneer of rock n roll? what about the early bluesmen who incorporated the augmented "blue note" into
the pentatonic scale that chuck used so well? what about the thousands of african slaves whose call and
response singing evolved into the 12 bar pattern chuck used in most of his songs?

hey hey!
first, i'm no expert, but as a working musician...
bass in a bar band, instructor( mostly beginners ),
and on call drummer for a couple local studios...
i am buying/selling/trading musical gear weekly, sometimes dayly.
when i'm looking to aquire something different, what name is on the instrument is of the least importance.
i'm concerned with.. does it fret true, stay in tune up the neck, have a good low end punch, have a sweet tone in the upper register, the right reach for me ( i have small hands) or my student, and does it fall in the right price range. with acoustics i lean toward the lower end of price ranges, for several reasons:
1) i'm poor
2) if it's for a student, most of them( or their parents) are also poor
3) if it gets stolen, dropped, kicked, abused or busted by my 4 teenagers, i'm not out a ton of money
4) the less i spend on music stuff, the more i have for other important things( schnapps, beer, weed, etc.)
5) the type of songs i write require a flashy, acid country, punk folk, cheap white trash twang
6) i'm poor
the main thing is play everthing you can get your hands on.. the right instrument will pick you.

Teenage Crank Whore
I was a teenage crank whore.. I was livin large
Just a teenage crank whore cookin in mom's garage
I'd lay up fer weeks and weeks
With booze and dope and tweakin freaks
I was a teenage crank whore but I ain't no more.
I was a teenage crank whore.. once my life was good
Just a teenage crank whore crusin the neighborhood
Stealin stuff that I could hock
Tradin mom's T.V. for a big ole rock
I was a teenage crank whore but I ain't no more.
I was a teenage crank whore.. once I had it all
Nothin but a teenage crank whore bangin dope and
climbin the walls
If I wasn't buyin, boys I was sellin
Got wound to tight and now I'm a felon
I was a teenage crank whore but I ain't no more
(repeat last line and end.)

I have an Oscar Scmidt washburn cutaway it's one of the finest i've ever played. Gave 169.00$ for it used in a music store. also had an alvarez acoustic-electric had a fair tone but was clunky to play i traded it for some other gear at the same store.
the alvarez was around 125.00 used.

Finger Ease... spray can...use directly on the strings.
a little pricey but works great!

Ken makes a good point. I have a couple buddys who have been working with the biggies in nashville...
they have two songs in the top 100 country charts right now. They say this.. follow the "nashville formula" and you can break big. But the only nashville formula i can see is have a pretty front man, a fiddle and steel guitar, then play 80's rock. they have been trying to get me involved because nashville wants 3 songwriters colaborating together!?!? i, however, ain,t
just outside the box, i'm outside the circle thats outside the box... write about what moves you.. whats important in your life and it will fall together.
i've written hundreds of songs over the past 30 or so years and consider all but a handfull to be total junk. the big thing is keep at it! the hardest person to please is yourself...

hey hey i'm slim. playing acid bluegrass and punk country since 1972, but i'm liking folk and blues more as time goes on....

hey hey...
I agree with everyone...hard to pick one !
Mama was a swing baby. All day it was Glen Miller,
Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, etc.
made me the swing drummer i am today. ha
then night in the midwest.... am radio-wls out of chicago.
jethro tull, zz top, deep purple, the doors, hendrix,
zepplin...daytime radio-the beatles, folk, and bubblegum!
so i vote for the archies, for that timeless classic-
sugar sugar.
peace, slim
I am first and formost a drummer....
county swing and cut time for
30+ years.... lots of bands.
I have an old Lyra 3 piece from the
60's with planet z cymbols and a New york pro 4 piece. Picked up guitar by watching others and started on bass in the mid 80's. I have a Hohner flat top, an Oscar Smidt washburn, an Alverez acoustic electric, and a new york pro 6 string. Also 2 silvertone basses
and a series 10. play bass now in a 3 piece country band it's a blast!
Peace.... Slim
