Well, I might as well kick this one off!

If there is anyone looking for a guitar buddy for jamming/drinking in the Cardiff / Vale of Glamorgan area, then would be great if you got in touch!

Look forward to hearing from you!

Definitely! I have suggested to Chordie Admin that they have a section on the forum that allows people that live in the same area to get in touch with each other ... precisely for the same reasons as above! I know I would benefit from it massively and I'm sure loads of other people would too. (Sorry to keep banging on about it 'Admin'!!)

yeah, totally agree with you 'jpage' I had a session a little while back with a friend who is an awsome guitarist...I played some really simple blues lead patterns while he strummed and finger picked in the background!! I'm sure it was pretty rubbish by any other standard but for me it felt great to improvise and as if I had actually put some of what I had learned into practice!

I think if you were a beginner, a band probably wouldn't let you play in their band for real would they!? I think 'guitar man' may be referring to simple jamming sessions with other guitarists of roughly the same standard?

Hey Fooby18. It's South East Wales, UK. I guess by the fact that you needed to ask that you don't live nearby then!? hehe

Hey Chordie Admin Team,

Not sure where to put this suggestion/request or indeed whether something like it already exists here...

With so many beginner guitarists on here all seeking advice etc, could I suggest that you have a section on the forum that allows people that live in the same geographical area to make contact with one another to get together and play? I know I would love to meet with someone in my area who is roughly the same standard as me and have a good old session every so often. Any thoughts?

Oh and just in case, if there is anyone from Cardiff/Vale of Glamorgan out there...get in touch!!

Afternoon!

I learnt Silent Night a couple of weeks ago, but it was a really nice arpeggio version. The link to the guitar lesson that i followed is below. It looks pretty complicated at first, but stick with it and it soon makes sense and it sounds lovely too. I reckon with maybe an hour or so per night, you should have it licked within a week or so! Plenty of time to sit your missus down in front of the fire and woo her with your christmas romanticism!! lol!

Anyone else had a go at this one? What do you think?

Have fun!

Many thanks guys, but I actually ended up buying a blonde coloured Fender DG25S (after much 'negotiating' with the wife on how much I could spend)! Plays really nice to be honest! And it looks real pretty too!

That's great! Many thanks James! I'll take a look and see how I get on. Just thinking of something Christmassy for the Grandparents this year ... and with Sound of Music being on every bloody year at Christmas time, thought they might quite like it!

Thanks again!

Gday!

Looking for basic chord progresion to Rodger & Hammerstein's (?) song "A Few of My Favourite Things" from the Sound of Music. Have looked for ages but can only fine 'Power Chord' tabs.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Cheerio for now.

hehehe!! I thought that I was one of the only people that had the problem with sweaty fingers!! I find that the strings change colour really fast on the frets that I play most ... and of course I'm guilty of not wiping them down after having played! YUK!!

G'day! Have been looking on 'youtube.com' in the past couple of days...there are loads of pretty good guitar lessons on there. Well, videos of people showing you how they play a particular song anyway! just type in 'guitar lesson' followed by the song you might like to see in the seach engine! for those that have learned to pay without any lessons (like me) it could be an invaluable tool...

On that note, I have come across a version of Ralph McTell's 'Streets of London' which I love! I have tried to find a tab that represents how this guy has done it but not having much luck! Before anyone gets angry...yes I have looked here on Chordie too! Have pasted a link to the video below... it looks like a really simple arrangement of mostly arpeggios of the normal chord progression but with a couple of hammer-ons and pull-offs in a small riff between chorus and verse (which is what I'm looking for!). If anyone can direct me to somewhere that might have a similar arrangement for this song, I'd be really grateful!!

I had this trouble when i first started too. Try looking up 'Travis Fingerpicking' on t'internet. This is a good place to start and gets the fingers working on simple arpeggios. You can then go on and adapt it to your taste and style of music as you get quicker and more accurate with hitting the right strings with the right fingers. Hope this helps?

The problem I have when looking at tabs and chords to songs is not the how the time signature works but the beats per minute to which I can try and set my metronome to. Is there a general rule for bpm for each of the time sigs or is it a case of finding a recording to the song and having a listen?

Cheers mate!! Contrary to what I have said so far about what I am or not getting, (you guys must be well bored of it by now! hehehe) I actually went out yesterday and got a Fender DG22S. The missus made me compromise on price and I (cough) decided to get this for the time being! It was second choice but it looks and plays great! The colour is real light (blonde I think they call it) and the sound is bloody amazing for the price! I feel a bit like I've sold myself down the river, but it means I get to save towards one of the ones that I really want a couple of years down the line! Anyone else have this particular guitar?

Have had a look, they do look like nice guitars to be honest! Thanks for pointing them out to me ... not going to change my mind though! Had a play on some of the other mid-range in the shop and I'm not sure whether it's just that particular guitar, but it completely wiped the floor with most (if not, all) of the other guitars and even most that were much more expensive! In my mind (scary place!) I think that it's a find in a million and cant wait to take it home!

Cool thanks for that guys! I think I have made a decision. I've fallen in love with a Takamine F360 solid spruce top. It sounds absolutely brilliant and is, by all accounts one of the originals made in Japan before they then started being made in Korea & China. It's going for £399, down from around £650. I love it, I would almost compare it to some of the Gibsons and Taylors that I was playing in the same shop for feel and sound ... and I'm buying it at the weekend but was hoping for a bit of feedback on the guitar itself and the price I'm paying for it please!?

Is anyone able to please recommend a really great tutorial book/website that explains how to play the five pentatonic scales and their positions and all major scales in the first position? (preferably a book as have limited access to t’internet at the mo ... despite my frequent messages on here!)

Have now gotten to the stage where I have realised that these are actually quite important. Have tried to look online but the majority of the explanations are really confusing and make me just want to not try and learn them at all!

Oh also, does anyone have any opinions on ‘Simon & Patrick’ guitars. Looking at possibly buying the ‘SP6 Spruce’.

Cheers guys!

Not forgetting of course that it is sometime necessary to 'grag' for e.g. when holding the top string with your thumb ...

Kahuna, good advice re using a strap even when sitting down, helped a lot! Thanks.

The problem I have with singing (apart from my terrible voice!) is keeping a steady strumming pattern all the way through. I have a tendancy to strum to the beat of the syllables of the particular lyrics! I find it really hard to avoid!

oooh, I hadn't heard of the EJ-300, shall have to take a look! Well, I'm meeting a bloke in one the big music shops here on Weds. I have told him what budget I have and he is going to sit me down with about 6 -7 guitars in my price range and let me have a go ... think I might need to take a sleeping bag as I'll be there all day and night! (always good to get a second pair of ears eh!?) I actually played on a couple of Gibsons and Taylors while I was there the other day ... felt like crying at the knowledge that I couldn't afford one in a million years! Sooo easy to play, even made me sound better than I actually am! I'm not ashamed to admit that the thought of just running out of the shop like a bat out of hell with guitar in hand, did cross my mind!! (joking of course!)

Hello again,

I have narrowed down my search for a new guitar to either the Epiphone 'EJ200 Cutaway' or the Epiphone 'Dove' (couldn't afford a real Gibson in a million years!!). Only thing is that I have heard a few bad things about Epiphone in terms of bad buzzing on the frets along the majority of the fretboard. is this a common problem that occurs?

Other options are the Takamine EG320Sc or the Yamaha APX700. Hmmmm...choices choices, dis duck or dat duck?!

Yeah I guess it helps...thanks for that! Any chance of doing a tab for the intro above the 12th fret!? cheeky I know, but you gotta ask eh!?

Hey

Take a look at the link below. Pretty basic but a good guide for getting started on strum patterns. Certainly a place to start anyway!

Perhaps a silly question! Trying to find the intro to Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. only thing is that I don't have a cut-away and can't access the beyond the 12th fret. Is there a way to do this please?
