hi there,

wondering if any one out there can help me?

i'm expecting a new scratchplate for my fender stratocasterany day now. when i fit it though, how do i know what distance the pickups should be from the strings?

or should i just simply measure beforehand?

i had the same problem but i found it went, the more i got used to playing the songs. i too play and sing house of the rising sun and just found that after awhile, the guitar bits are second nature so i donthave to think about changing chord or picking.

i'd just recommend that...learn the song until it's almost second nature. i know some are tricky, but...yeah. lol

hope it goes well for you

i started with just a squier by fender and a 15w amp.

now i use a 65w crate amp, a 50th anniversary series fender stratocaster, cry baby wah pedal and boss MT2 metal zone distortion pedal.

i'd like to get a mick thomson series b.c.rich just for show purposes because i think it looks sexy. i've heard quite a few negative things about b.c.rich though - apparently they're dead chunky and heavy

i agree. vampsfang is a novice who pretends to tour with led zep. i wouldn't listen to him

at the top of the neck, just past the first fret, you'll notice like a hollowing. inside that is a little hexagon shaped nut. you'll need an allen key. i can't remember which way to turn it but you'll soon find out. give it a few turns and see how it goes

ah yes!

and i think you're right!

i know a lot of the songs i write are about stuff going on in my life.

the last one i wrote 'gladstone incident' was about my nan dying, not too long ago.

and i called it 'gladstone incident' because gladstone was the name of the ward she was on where she died.

ooooh, house of the rising sun is a great song! about a brothel in new orleans

i wouldn't blame the guitar. i started on a squier and they do the job fine.

firstly, if the guitar is new or the strings have recently been fitted, you may just need to give them time to break in, because they'll tend to stretch and go out of tune a lot to begin with.

other than that, i found with the squier bullet that the action isn't too great when bought. i had to alter mine. i found that i got fret buzz which altered the sound a bit. if you get buzz, i'd personally alter the action. it's easy to do yourself and most guitar places do it for free

hi mate,

i guess it depends what sort of music you enjoy playing. when i started, i tended to play a lot of nirvana stuff and found that ti was worth buying a BOSS MT2 Metal Zone. it's a distortion pedal which i found useful for switching quickly to the distorted guitar bits on songs like 'smells like teen spirit.' because it isn't really very practical to poke the distortion button on the amp when you're in the middle of playing.

other than that, the cry baby wah wah pedal is a nice one if you're into a bit of solo work and jimi hendrix stuff.

i take it you have problems baring after being on a normal chord then, or something?

if this is the case, just practice. try taking the song a bit slower, then when it comes to the bar chord, put the shape of the chord on before the bar.

hope this isn't too late, but how about 'reality' by david bowie. it's about today's life style for the young and stuff.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying an overdrive pedal. can anyone recommend a good make? also, what are these overdrives/tube screamers mainly intended to do?

while i'm on the subject of screamers, can anyone help me to get my guitar to scream I can do it now and again but i'm not completely satisfied.

help will be much appreciated.

thank you

I quite like 'hey joe' by jimi hendrix. it seems to be about a guy called joe who's off to shoot his girl friend/wife for cheating on him

too bad you didn't make it, and you prefer to spend your time boasting on the internet rather than playing guitar. nevermind, ey? go back to your room and play your little air guitar

i started playing with a squier strat. i find them to be really good guitars to begin with. they're reliable and of course, made by Fender. They sound lovely too.

if yours is a 20th anniversay series, if you keep it in good condition chances are the value will increase if you wait until say, their 30th or 40th anniversary.

i'd say you had a good buy

hi ada,

if you're on msn tonight, i'll send you an exercise or two that's meant to build speed up if that's what you're after.

it's called a 'galloping horse.' it's done with the Am chord and the other one with a G i think. the idea is to pick the chord pattern and build up faster and faster and it's supposed to sound like a galloping horse when you get to a certain speed. i'm not that great at it though, i need to practice! but i'll send them to you tonight, and if you keep at it i hope it helps your speed

guys like him need telling though. it's us younger generation that are the future of music. not someone who keeps boasting about how many people he plays infront of and how many songs he knows. thank you for the support!
