Hi Rich:

Here we go again! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">

Once more I'm about to aggravate the purists and serious players here who will inevitably say "practice practice practice", and they are of course correct.

Playing the full fingerings of any chord does indeed sound better, and I'm sure that with the recommended finger strengthening exercises and months of the aforementioned practice, practice, practice, most people could eventually play all the barred chords reasonably well.

If they did'nt first get frustrated to all get out and quit.

I'd be willing to bet that F and Bm and the rest of the barred chords have much to do with a lot of guitars gathering dust in unopened closets.

That being said, there are definitely easier ways to play F and Bm than the official and proper fingerings.

For those of us with no delusions of ever being Liona Boyd or Eric Clapton, F can be fingered 003211 with the first finger fretting e and b on the first fret , the index finger fretting g on the second and your ring finger fretting D on the third fret.

Bm can be done 004432 with first finger second fret e, index finger third fret b, ring finger fourth fret g and baby finger also on fourth fret but on the D string.

Yes I know that this isn't proper and that there are the dreaded open strings and that I will probably burn in Hell for attempting to seduce a beginner away from the pure and proper path to true guitar enlightenment, but to heck with it.

I play because I love to play and if making some chords easier, if less than perfect, keeps us amateurs pickin and grinnin rather than fumin and fussin and storing our guitars in the closet, then it's all good for me.

O.K. purists....let the Tunedeaf bashing begin! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">

I am going to try sending a couple examples. If they don't work, you may need to advise me on the best method.

Hi Again:

Coincidentally enough, it occurs on the About Chordie Forum page URL <a href="http://www.chordie.com/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=1290&start=0&S=682c1d902cae58894bcb0dc7b8e26e28" target="_blank"> http://www.chordie.com/forum/index.php? … 90&amp ;start=0&S=682c1d902cae58894bcb0dc7b8e26e28</a>

as well as the public songbooks page <a href="http://www.chordie.com/publicbooks.php" target="_blank">http://www.chordie.com/publicbooks.php</a>

and the front page of a songbook <a href="http://www.chordie.com/publicbooks.php?show=details&songid=21387" target="_blank"> http://www.chordie.com/publicbooks.php? … s&song id=21387</a> for example.

I should also note that this does *not* appear to be an issue with the Netscape browser.

Hmmmm

Don't worry too much about this minor irritant at the moment tho. It's been an issue for quite some time and I've survived quite nicely.

Hi Sysadmin:

I seem to be experiencing an issue whereby when I'm in some of the Chordie screens, the public songbook screens specifically, the boxes from the top right corner (5 Popular Songs, New Songbooks and the Links )

overlay the Public Songbook screen making the top right hand corner where the sort order options are, unreadable.

I am using the IE 6 browser with my monitor set to 1024x768 resolution.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Hi Sysadmin:

I was wondering if it would be possible to add an option to sort songbooks by percentage of edited songs?

I find that I principally tend to sort by rating, then scan to find books with a higher percentage of songs that have been edited by the owner.

I think that having percent edited as a sort option would be quite helpful.

Thanks

Writing a love song eh?

Hmmmmm.

Well, I can tell you that I've been writing love poems for my wife ever since we've been together (and that's over 20 years now) and not one of them's worth the paper it's written on from the viewpoint of "literary importance".

That being said, each sappy, syroppy and poorly structured one of them is important to her and the way her face lights up after she's read one means the world to me.

Just tell her that you love her and more importantly, *why* you love her...how just a smile or soft touch of her hand can turn your entire day from crap to incredible.

If it's early in the relationship, keep it warm and romantic. Save the "heaving bosoms and burning loins" for later and don't let the structure supercede the message.

I always find myself getting caught up in meter and rhyme, sometimes losing what I'd meant to say in the format of the poem.

Fortunately, as a wise man once said, "The medium is the message".

If my 47 years have taught me anything about the female of the species at all (and that's still up for debate), it's that they are very forgiving of their mates failings as long as they know your heart was in it.

The simple fact that you try will likely gain you some points.

Hey Rogerpuppy:

You know, I'm a Service Technician in the real world and one of the things that drive my customers nuts is when their system won't fault for me the way it faulted for them...kinda like your tooth not hurting anymore by the time you get to the dentist! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">

All of which brings me to your post (and thanks for the feedback BTW).

I read your post and said to myself "Self" says I, "Isn't that the way you always do it anyway?" and just to be sure, I went to a public songbook, picked a likely candidate and followed my standard routine which is exactly what you outlined and, sure enough, this time I got the song saved to my songbook.

Sheesh!

Darned if I know why it should work today for the first time ever, but heck, as I tell my customers, I don't argue with success.

As for the ethics of saving a song from someone else's book to my own after they had edited it, I honestly hadn't thought of this before as an issue, but I can see where some folks might find it an interesting moral dilema.

I figure that every song I find here represents *somebody's* initial effort to transcribe the song and it wouldn't even *be here* if they were'nt amenable to having folks copy it for their own use.

The majority of songs in my songbook have received some tweaking on my part to make them more closely match my ear and ability to play (or inability to play according to some <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing"> ) and I do the editing for my own benefit.

If someone likes my version and chooses to save it for themselves then I'm more than happy and even a little flattered to have them do so.

Hope this soothes any qualms you might have about saving songs from other songbooks and thanks again for the advice and feedback!

Hi Sysadmin:

I have a problem when trying to save from a Public Songbook to my own songbook.

Every time I try to do this the song appears in My Songbook as "Unknown" and has no test.

I also just heard from another user who has similar problems trying to save a song from a public book.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi Roger:

I have no problems printing songs from public books or the general search. I just click on the "file" button in the top left corner and "save as" to my hard drive, then print from there.

It's always worked perfectly for me.

Barre Chords....ARRRGH!

I never use them and I know this will drive the serious players nuts, but I've found that almost any barre chord will sound O.K. if you just fret the fop four strings and strum with the emphasis on them.

I know I should practice, practice, practice, but as a guy with no higher aspirations than to sit in my den and play well enough to recognise and sing along with the tune myself, this works sufficiently well to allow me to play enough songs well enough to keep myself motivated and keep the whole guitar playing thing fun.

It all depends on your motivation for playing...do you want to be a Guitar God (something that no amount of practice will ever make *me*), or do you just wnat to play for fun and relaxation?

Hi Admin:

I haven't checked this feature out yet, but your admonition to only make corrections we're "100%" sure about almost gave me the impression that the "correct song" option would allow users to edit the "source" material.

That's not correct is it?

If it is, I could see trouble arising if a well intentioned user made changes to a listing that the "owner" didn't sgree with.

I know that I've edited most of the entries in my song-book to fit with my own personal interpretation of the song and I'd hate to have that work undone by someone "correcting" it to their own ear.

I am always eager to hear what people think of my versions of a song and I welcome and encourage suggestions for improvements to them, but I wouldn't want them alterred without my knowlege and I would never presume to arbitrarily change someone else's original work.

I'm sure I'm wrong in my understanding of this new feature and your reply will confirm that! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink">

Good Morning Admin:

I've just been perusing the public books and noticed that the rating listing has changed from giving the number of ratings when you hover over the stars to saying you should open the songbook to rate it.

There appears to be no mention of the number of ratings for any of the books again.

Is it just me or was this a conscious change for some reason?

Thanks and TTYL

Hi Minette:

I saw your post this morning and immediately shuddered!

I love the page layout exactly as it has always been, and if the changes you mention had happened, I also think it would be a lot harder to use the pages.

Thing is, the only change I've noticed is the actual listings of the songs, which I actually find to be a lot cleaner than the previous format.

The actual song pages appear to be unchanged on my browser...chord chart placement at the side of the song and chord notations in bold blue above the line where the change would be indicated.

Maybe your personal settings have somehow changed?

Hope this is the case and good luck!

Hi Again Dreamer:

I'm not 100% sure because I don't know how Chordie works, but I've got a nasty feeling that the link may only work when I'm on-line.

The link is to my version in my songbook and I'm not sure how Chordie stores entries there. I do know that I've searched songs I've updated and not found my versions in the general song search, so I think that Chordie has some method of saving entries in personal song-books that is different than how it finds songs in general.

Of course that's all guess work.

I did try the link just now and it brought me to the copy in my song book.

You can try looking in my songbook (A tunedeaf songbook) and it might come up.

As for the missing chord between the Gsus and G, I think you're right and I missed it the first time through.

Try this...[Gsus] Turn and look [Gsusalt] be [G+b] hind,

Gsusalt being my own name for 000033 and G+b being another made up name for 320033. I can't always find an official listing for the fingerings that sound right. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink">

It sounds more complete to me as I try it now.

Also, I've found Chordie to be a bit quirky of late.

I get a lot of really slow page loads and as many outright failures.

Probably related to the new database our sysop is working on.

Hi Dreamer:

Yet another song I really liked and had forgotten until someone brought it up here.

I'm starting to think that I should start my Chordie sessions in the Song Request Forum as you guys are reminding me of some great songs!

Anyways, I found one of the versions that James mentioned and played with it for a while.

I don't think it's perfect by any means...I really had issues with the original chorus and I'm still not really happy with the Gm to Am in the line "Don't let me in", but it's at least playable.

If you can add any input to it, that'd be great!

Try this version and let me know how close it is.

I've had a lot of fun playing it since your original post put it in my head, but I've only heard the song a couple of times and I'm not sure how accurate my version is.

If I could only get my issues at the office addressed so quickly and completely!

Next issue...I'll need the names of the people who rated my book so I can hunt down the jokers who gave me a bad rating! lol !

Hi Again:

I'm not really worried about people "stuffing the ballot box" as it were. I doubt most folks are so insecure as to take the time to pad thier numbers.

My inquiry was just based on trying to make the rating system as informaive as possible.

As with any survey, the number of respondants impacts the accuracy of the results, so if I were to search by rating and found a book with 100 votes and a four average, I'd have no doubts that it was worth looking into. With no total votes, the high (or low) rating could be strictly the opinion of one or two individuals and therefore shouldn't impact my decision on checking it out.

Now, if I saw a book that was highly edited *and* had a high rating with 100 votes, I'd probably dedicate days to going through the entries!

Also, I hope you won't take my suggestions as criticism. They in no way are. Chordie is by far and a way the best site for aspiring guitarists and the site that I always refer to first whenever I'm playing.

Hi Again:

Just browsed through the new song books and I have to say that I like the new format. I especially like the percent edited heading.

One additional suggestion if it's possible...re: the ratings...is it possible to say how many ratings the book has received to end up with the final total?

My new book was initially unrated, so, on a whim and with no hubris whatsoever <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink"> I rated it a four, and when I went out and looked, sure enough, it had a four rating, which, in a way, kind of invalidates the rarings if you know what I mean.

Hey James...heck, I'm just here for fun <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink">.

Really, I'm here for pretty much the same reasons and because Chordie is such an excellant source for songs for me to try and practice on.

On another note tho, I was just browsing thorugh the highest rated book in the public books and noticed that the song I looked at (Time of your Life) had numerous comments attached. I think it would be very neat to have songs that had received comments have some form of notation in the title list in the book...like an asterisk beside the title or something.

I'd also like to know when someone had left a comment on one of my entries. As I mentioned earlier, I welcome suggestions/comments on all of my re-workings.

And if someone could identify my made up chords, that would be great too! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_wink.gif" border=0 alt="Wink">

My two cents worth re: the public songbooks...

I posted my rather eclectic songbook (yep, no identifiable binding genre) more as a means of soliciting comments/assistance on the songs within it.

While I have edited most of the songs in it to some greater or lesser extent, some remain unedited because, either I liked it as I found it, or I have yet to focus on the particular song (I have a short attention span and new songs come to mind on a regular basis, so I find them and store them for later dissection).

From the gist of this conversation, I may have missed the general intent of posting a song-book. As I said, for me, it's a means of getting feedback and suggestions on the songs within.

Should I make it private again if it's not going to be in line with what's been mentioned in the prior posts?

(18 replies, posted in Songwriting)

Or...you could run it through a postage meter as a postage meter will automatically date the material and the newer machines print a perfectly legible mark pretty much every time.

Heck, you might even want to run the original piece of paper that the song was written on through the meter as well.

Hi Admin:

I was wondering if there is some way to reach other members based on the individual song they have posted other than bumping into them in a forum or through their songbooks which is not always where I find a song.

Here's a thought for the next upgrade...perhaps if the person who posted a song *has* a songbook, a link to that book could be listed in the the song posting.

I have come accross more than one tune that was near perfect as posted by the original person and I would like to be able to check out other things they have posted.

Thanks as always.
