I had Lasic eye Surgery about 15 years ago and had mediocre results. I was nearsighted and my eyes were 20/200 & 20/250. After surgery my eyes were about 20/50  I wasn't happy with that so I have worn glasses every since. I could have had them touched up with another surgery with no cost but I elected not to. The surgery was no problem but the healing process to me was uncomfortable, and I didn't want to go through it again. Some of the down sides are your night vision is going to be affected , seems every one is a little different. If you don't need bifocals now you probably will after the operation.
The plus side is I am not restricted to have glasses to drive and it is nice to be able to see better without glasses while watching TV . Would I do it again,  probably and hopefully the technology has improved in the procedure and results. My eyes have changed very little since the procedure.

Jeff,

I am pretty sure it is a long scale also = 25 1/4''  I believe all the J series are long scale and also OM series are long scale. The 000 series are short scales 24 3/4''. Long scales are supposed to have a little more volume. That is a good looking big guitar smile

Jeff ,
I believe the body size is the same as a 000028 or M-36 and M-38 . Steve Earle has a model M-21. They aren't as deep as a dread but have the Jumbo size . If this is what it is , I have played 000028H and M-36 martins that are the perfect size. They are big yet they aren't uncomfortable to play like a dread. You scored a good one.

Amy,
You might want to try some Martin Lifespan SP strings. I have been using them on my Martin and I like them. They will sound different than Elixirs. I have had good luck with the life of them and prefer them over Elixirs. I use Elixirs on some of my other guitars but I think they mute some of the sound on the Martin. I use Lights .012-.054 . They are gonna sound a little brighter to start with but settle in very nice......

Jeff, it looks like an OM18 or 00018 I'm not sure what it is , but I bet it is gonna sound killer. I hope to get my hands on it. Those small box Martins really get rockin with some fingerpicking. I wonder if it is long scale or short scale. The yellow tuners are Cool..............

I am having a shake up of my schedule but , I work 14 days on and 14 days off so hopefully I will have it ironed out by then. We are coming, just hope we make it when the rest of the Chordie  gang is there.

"London Bus Pub'' is a way cool place to visit. Friendliest folks you're ever gonna meet.

Liz said the other day we need to go to Fla. to jam with the boys at the London Bus Pub again. I was waiting to hear that so we are going. One of the BEST times I've had jamming and enjoying life.

I play the A major chord with my index finger barring 3 strings in the first position , if barred correctly with the index it sounds , exactly like a first position 3 fingered chord. It is also easy to do walk up and walk downs from this position. I don't know about weak, sounds good to me. I slide up and do a A-7 barre chord at the 5th fret from the first position A major and it sounds nice to.

Howdy Redrider,

John Prine is one of my favorites and I cover a lot of his songs. I have been playing them for many years and my suggestion would be to play the chords he uses and listen to how he picks them. Have fun playing them and as you progress you will hear notes he picks out and his picking style. I don't play them all exactly like John but some I try to come close and  some I add my own interpretation. The main thing is to have fun with his songs and you will grow as you play them.

Here is a John Prine site that has nearly all the chords and lyrics to most John Prine songs. Fish and the Whistle is tabbed out as are a lot of his fingerpicked songs.

John Prine is cool and shares his lyrics, tabs and encourages others to play his songs , here is a Great site.

Have fun playing

There are advantages to playing the G chord with both fingerings , I learned an alternate fingering when I was a boy , thumb on the 6th string and index on the 1 string. I play it most of the time with the 2,3,4 fingering and recommend it to beginners , but I practice the 1,2,3 fingering because it has it's advantages to. It does take some practice to try and teach them hard headed fingers to use the fingering your brain is telling it use smile

I find the 2,3,4  fingering is easier for me to embellish the G chord  than the other, but for some songs the 1,2,3 is better.

I have two Daughters and played at my youngest daughters wedding and have been asked to play a couple songs for my eldest daughters wedding , I have played at nearly all my nieces and nephews weddings and haven't repeated the same songs yet. So for her I have chosen a couple Bob Dylan Songs, "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" I am going to  sing, play guitar and harmonica for this one and I will sing and play acoustic guitar on "To Make You Feel My Love".
I played "Forever Young"  by Bob Dylan for my nieces wedding a couple years ago and l love the song. Bob Dylan is such a great songwriter it makes me feel good to play his songs. Just about every wedding I have played they have let me make the choices for the songs and I am grateful. I had a lot of comments on the Forever Young , most of the people hadn't heard it before and  really liked it.
I hope the Dylan choices go over well again smile

It's possible that your guitar , just needs a good setup from a good Luthier. I recently purchased a guitar from a friend that was hard to play , the intonation was terrible and didn't sound very good. I did the work myself , but I would seek help with someone with experience . With a truss rod adjustment and filing the nut and bridge , new strings , you would not believe it was the same guitar , easy to play , intonation on , and resonates. Maybe yours just needs help and it' s a lot cheaper than buying a new guitar.

All 5 guitars were recovered after a security guard , pawned one of the guitars for $ 250. , That led to his arrest and recovery of the others.

Amy, she said "Awe shucks it weren't nothin" smile

Everything Zurf recommends is good stuff. Another thing I have helped beginners with similar problems. Keeping your thumb on the back of the neck , roll your wrist under the neck and your fingers will have a better angle to approach the strings.

Here's a couple of vids of the boys jammin, I apologize for not bringing the right sd cards for the Zoom vid camera, but these are the only vids Lizzie got that were kinda complete , before running out of memory.

Here's another take on a Fantastic Trip, Liz and I flew in Friday and got settled in a room and Saturday went to Jeff's . Jeff had the clubhouse reserved and it was a great facility for a jam session. Jeff was a Great host and had thought of everthing. Drinks and Food , no problem. Jeff, Zurf , Paul and I jammed for a couple hours and Toney showed up with his lefty J-45 .

Toney is a musician and I mean this guy is Fantastic, humble , sharing and knows how to get everyone involved. He started off with "Knocking On Heavens Door". The best way to get a jam going is playing a great 3 chord progression so everyone can play and sing along. We played and drank beer , till my fingers were sore and that takes several hours.

Then along comes Sunday, Liz and I arrived an hour before Toney's was scheduled to start and had lunch at the London Bus Pub,
it is a very small place but I would never have dreamed of a better bunch of people to play with and play to. Toney set  a small PA system up and a few other musician's set up also. One dude set up Congas, Harmonica playin Kent, and can he play set up his harp amp and mic, Roger set up his bass equipment. These are some folks that come every sunday and join in and play with Toney. These folks are Musicians.

Toney played with his Band of Music Lovers for about an hour and come over to our table and asked Who's next . In a rehearsed unison , Jeff , Zurf and Paul , pointed and said WAYNE !

I had not brought my guitar in so I run out to the rental car , got my guitar out of the trunk , tuned it up and give it a whirl. Played a couple songs and it was  going ok until I played "Dont think Twice " and had a terrible feedback, everytime I played Em , the fifth string was HOT and about blew Kent the Harp man and my ear drums OUCH !
Paul took over and Rocked On, followed by Zurf and Jeff. Zurf was a trooper , got up and did his First ever performance for a crowd, but if it was easy everbody would be doing it smile

Toney played again for awhile and the high of the evening for me was his cover of Neil Young's "Cortez The Killer" it was Fantastic, he really needs to record it , not only can he play the heck out of the Guitar he can Sing.

87 yr old Roscoe played several country tunes in between a few others and B-Flat played some too. Bee Rad is the owner of the London Bus Pub and what a great guy and an absolute music lover. Bee Rad sang a few with Toney and others through the night.

Toney come and asked if I was ready to play again and asked if I would play one of my originals and John Prines "Hello in There" , he didn't have to ask twice, I was so ready to play this time. I played 9 songs this set and enjoyed every minute of it. Bee Rad loves John Prine and sang with me on most of them. Jeremy played bass on one song and Zurf played bass on one. I know Zurf wasn't feeling good about his bass playing but I was having a ball. I think I finished with Mr Bojangles with Toney on Bass and Bee Rad singing along.

Then come the British Invasion of Paul Wood and Roger on Bass , they rocked the house. Later Jeff come on and after some some coaxing did a Fantastic version of Monster Mash , with Toney doing some killer background Vocals.
I think Toney's normal 3 hr gig turned into about 6 or 7 hrs but what a great time.

A huge thanks to Jeff "Topdown", Toney "Southpaw 41L"  and Bee Rad "London Bus Pub"

Also Lizzie B needs an honorable mention for Dancing with Roscoe and Kent , I think she made their Day smile

I will be bringing a Zoom Q3 HD so hoping to get some good footage. This should be a good trial to see how it works. I will be checking out Zurfs E-Reader , songbooks are always kind of a drag, but they seem to be necessary as my memory isn't getting better with age .

I believe it was alot earlier than 2006 that I and others Joined Chordie , I think the new improved Chordie format started keeping track of members then.

It may not be Epic for a Big City kid like Topdown but I bet it will be for Lizzie and I smile  we don't get to town much........ but we do have AM radio

Wayne - we don't wear underwear in Florida - I'm pretty sure it's forbidden and they may get confiscated at the airport. Bathing suits and flip flops (and guitars!) is all you will need.

I am very much looking forward to meeting Lizzie and pickin' a few tunes with you after all these years! That alone will make it Epic!

Sounds like you fellars are alot like we were when I lived in North Dakota, most of us were Swingers, we wore Bibs with no underwear smile
