Hello Family

Been awhile since I last checked in, and I'll update y'all in another post, but for now please allow me the question in the subject line above.

After many months of not feeling like it, I finally picked up the 6 string and started learning "The Year Clayton Delaney Died" in D. Well, even after transposing to an easier chord progression, my voice still didn't feel right, so I placed my capo on the 2nd fret and there it sounded great, but......my fat arthritic fingers kept getting blocked by the capo when trying to make the D and other chords. Any way to avoid this? An "F" would be okay as I am blocking the 1st 2 strings with my index finger, but cramming 3 to make a D, seems impossible for me.

D'ya see?

Thanks

Bill

Always happy to help, Jim, but basically I'm just a guy who majored in English Literature and taught it for a while. As far as songwriting and poetry, I know meter and every once in a while I see something in someone's work which is grammatically or structurally incorrect, and in the case of my students, if there's time (and there was never enough), we dissect his work until it "passes muster".

I feel confident that you  would have come up with the "of" on your own and as I said, it wasn't really necessary, but something like that can really nag away at you. smile I loook forward to your next work and am happy to help anytime. smile

A very nice tune rescued from the "cobwebs" of your mind, Jim? smile  I'm "inspired" to get my old steamer trunk and dust off some of my incomplete songs! This one "flows" , simply states its purpose and leaves us on a positive note. Your chorus is fine just as it is, but remember that little preposition "of" is there if you need it.  Sometimes it comes in handy if you don't want to stretch a word - such as "He bears all our sins.......".  I'm nitpicking, aren't I? You know why? Because on the face of it all, I am finding  less and less to criticize in your lyrics.

I also want to say that if Pete took the time to sit at his piano and work out a counter-melody for you, it must really be special. Keep up the good work, my friend!

I checked out the chords to this Hollies song and wow! That's one tough one for the ol' Strummerboy for sure! Another thing - and this is something we don't talk about much - is the timing. This song has lyrics and music which take paying close attention to. In other words, as you play and sing, you also have to think about the upcoming  word and what chord fits there. I hope I'm conveying this correctly and that it makes sense.

An example would be the word "light" which has the dreaded B7 chord; following that, there's the C and look out! Here comes C minor and the  C chord on the word "eat". In other words,  a lot of "turns" and "curves" and you better be there to meet that word  or the whole thing's gonna be one big  bust. smile

And you were, neo. You were there and it was a great cover version. My compliments.

Bill

It was a time when major stars were recording songs about Him, and there were some very good tunes indeed. I'll list one of my favorites and maybe y'all can list some of yours? You might like to turn this one up a mite - Dondra and I did and  caused the neighbors to complain to the point of sending the coppers. smile

Unbelievable!!!!

Did I see this ad in your hometown newspaper recently????

Songs Written On Demand   -----  Contact Tig @  ###-###-####!!!!!  smile

Yeah, it hits home for a lot of us, I guess, but what's so amazing, is your insight into the human psyche.

Strong work, Jim

PS: Someone wanted to know my birthday. It is on 12.31.2017 - tomorrow here in the States. Maybe already in NZ And AU? What's the future like, Mates???? smile

Do you ever get asked for "Blue Christmas" KevinRK?  If either that one or Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper" is played, I usually go outside. Not meaning to be critical of you, of course, but I'm so sensitive/emotional that songs like that really kill my good mood, IYKWIM. wink

Thanks

Here in the US, and example would be "Give A Little Bit", a song by Supertramp used for Amazon and a horribly sung cover of a tune by Lindsey Buckingham called "Holiday Road" which is being played ad nauseam. I think I know how this works - the artist gets paid some huge amount for the rights to use his work for a certain time, right? Even if the song is covered with different words (as the Buckingham tune is), but does he still get royalties, or are they suspended until such time as the usage of the tune  by the advertiser runs out?

How is it in the UK? New Zealand? Australia? Canada?  Do they also get paid for a  time-limit "contract" and what's the royalty system like?

Just throwing this one out for discussion if you are so inclined.

Wow! I'm thankful for all the responses and trouble Pete went to for all the info on this song. Don't know if any of you came across the quote of an old New York City cop?

"I want Danny Boy played at my funeral, and if it's not, I'm getting up and walking out!"

So much history! And about Waltzing Mathilda: The first time I heard the song was in a film starring Gregory Peck called "On The Beach". It was about (I think) the last nuclear submarine left sailing after a nuclear war. The sailors on board were singing it. Over and over until I could sing it along with them. Nevil Shute is the author of the book of the same name.

Thanks again

It's based on a silly little game Dondra and I play every day. If I am the first one to say, I love you, I get to say "ding" right afterward. She replies with "Love you too, *ding-ding* If she's the first one, the opposite applies.

Does any one remember Shirley Ellis' "Name Game"? I have it styled that way with a spoken part in the middle.

The chords as I imagine them are G ---D7 ----G----D7.Please try it and tell me if  this is a good progression.

BUT as usual, I have written myself into a corner and can't come out. It needs another verse and during the spoken part I have the band playing a G-C-D progression.

Here it is, please critique and help me out if you can with another verse? Thanks!

The Love Bell
(starts with a loud crescendo on drums and bass - one beat and simultaneously the singer begins with......)

Hey!!!
Let the love bell ring
let it ring, let it ring
I'm justa doin' my thing
Sayin' I love you!

It's a  game we play
each and every day
Be the first to say
"Baby I love you"

[Spoken} "Why not play along with us?
The rules are simple. You be the first one to say "I love you", and you get to say "ding" afterward. Like this: I lve you! *DING*
Your partner replies with, "Love you too" *DING, DING*. No losers in this game. Only ever-lovin' WINNERS."

So let the love bell ring!
Let it ring, let it ring
Justa doin' my thing
Sayin' I love you"

This great my friend, and like Phill's very personal.  Would you consider giving some domestic violence support site publishing rights free of charge, or does this work now belong to Chordie? Same question to you, Phill.

Thanks to both of you!

Bill

Phill this subject is close to my heart as Maree and I when we were working with the Salvation Army we became very  aware of a big problem here in NZ of domestic violence
Not only the violence but also the constant  verbal abuse they had to endure. It can be  hard to convince  beaten women that they had to escape relationships  not only for themselves but also their children. With  a big input from  Jandle we  put together these lyrics below   about that subject, which we both later on  turned into songs.

Move On
Whatever happened to
that beautiful lady
I use to know
what's happened to you
for your self esteem
I think that it's time
for you to move on
he is all wrong
He's been abusing you
It's time to move on
he's all wrong for you
it's time to move on
You got to regain
yourself and forget
for it's to his shame
don't you take the blame
you're far to good
to put up with that
he's a snake in the grass
get out real fast
it's time to move on he is all wrong
it's time to move on
he is so wrong
He's been abusing you
it's time to move on
he's all wrong for you
it's time to move on
And when you move on
you'll become real strong
and reclaim your life
you'll become what you like
he has no rights
you have your own life
It's time to move on
he is all wrong
it's time to move on
he is so wrong

I don't know how you'll take what I'm about to say, but I think your poem is so good it needs to be on a domestic violence  support site. The reason I was hesitant to write my suggestion was because it's personal and Ann be reluctant to post it, because of the memories the poem represents for her. But anyway, my Congratulations on another great composition.

....... that you or someone else has answered before, couldya overlook it, or just don't comment? I'm about to turn 68 and things healthwise are beginning to appear more quickly these days. smile

See, I'm down to about 4 Mb of RAM in my brain and we both have noticed my forgetfulness is getting worse, but I think that's expected given my psychological problem. One thing iI can still basically do is comment and discuss music with you here. I find that my long-term memory serves me better than the short-term, and I can remember a lot of musical stuff. smile

Thanks

........ used to be played in the 60's by my band "The Watchmen", but because I was only 15 at the time and it was an easy drum song, I never listened to the words, just sat there, drank my beer with one hand and a slow beat with the other. (When did you start drinking?  ;') )

But back to the lyrics: HOLY MOLY! I can't print them here so I will link you to wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Boy   (scroll down a little).

I read up on the tune later on and now know it was once called "Londonderry Air" and the words to fit the melody were written later, but man, is that song "dark" or what????

I dabbled around with that kind of song not too long ago, but nobody thought too much of it, including ME!:)

But "Danny Boy" has mine beat by a country mile!! smile

There are other "dark" songs, I know, and Russell's band has played the one about the water wanting to pull this guy's girl down below, and then there's "St. James Infirmary" (I'll let you look that one up) which also deals with this theme.

"DB" always filled our tip jar on St. Paddies Day. I just never realized the reason all those guys came up to the band stand to request it  Another one was "Irene Goodnight". My 15 year old self didn't question why those guys were blubbering and it wasn't until my college days that I found the  reason.

Question: Is "Waltzing Matilda" considered a sad tune?

Thanks

Bill

How you continually come up with words that hang together to create feelings is beyond me, but I really like this  one and see me in all of it. I agree with the "River of Jordan" line as well. Congratulations, Jim! Maybe we'll get to hear another hit on SoundCloud. (HINT*HINT)
