Hi Mark, Justin is THE MAN!!!!!

Here's a wee trick I do to try to figure out strum patterns....

First of all.... put down your guitar..... yes.... put it down..... away.....step away from the guitar.

Now play the song on your cd player or mp3 player or whatever and listen to it. As you're listening concentrate on the beat of the song. Really get into the rhythm and now play a bit of air drums. Really get into it. Notice which hand is doing what, and on what beat. Now put the hand you DON'T strum with behind your back, or sit on it, just get it out of the way and concentrate on yout strumming hand. Listen to the song again, really getting into the rhythm. Now air drums but with only ONE hand on the side of your thigh or knee or something. The result should be some kind of up and down beat with your hand across your thigh or whatever. Transfer this to up-strums and down-strums and you should have a basic strum pattern. It may take a while to get into it and it may not be perfect but it helps me pick out a basic pattern.

Jeez, I hope you can follow that. Welcome aboard.

I couldn't do without my capo. It's a cheap adjustable strap job I've had for about 20 years and it transforms me from one of crevs' howling dogs into more of an acceptable house trained mutt. I love the sound of open chords on the acoustic and my capo allows me to keep that most of the time. I have to admit to combining transposing and capoing(?) purely for finding easier chords.

Man, this looks like a winner. This could become a regular event. Could this be the start of an annual Chordiethon? I think Mrs Zurf may have something to say on that!!!!!!

Detman

Just checked out you Yamaha from your Youtube page. Looks cool. Sounds cool. Therefore, is cool. Nice guitars man. My collection stops at 1. And I'm happy.

I had a fender acoustic which I gave to a friend who wants to learn. And I'm happy. No regrets on that.

Try "Only You" by Yazoo here's the words n chords

If you don't know the song (it's an 80s song) look it up on youtube. It's not originally a guitar based song but is really easy to strum.

Good luck mac.

Thanks for that, Heather. I checked it out on iTunes and it sounded Ok. Very trad rock n roll. I have a birthday next month, maybe I'll get lucky and get the new album as a gift from my lovely wife. She hates buying me CDs cos I've got hundreds, hee hee.

A new amp, eh? Are we going to get to hear this in action? Looking forward to something new on Youtube from you guys soon.

All the best,

Al

Man, I'm out of touch. I didn't even know about the foxboro hot tubs. I've loved Green Day since about 94/95 and can't wait to hear the new album. Thanks for the heads up, guys.

Absolutely! If Chordie had been available when I started learning many many years ago i may never have abandoned learning as I did. The confidence from learning one of your favourite songs is amazing and Chordie has helped with that. Not to mention the family on the forum. I have had so many problems sorted by these guys I can't count them. This is a fantastic place to learn and without Per's wish to make it all so much easier then I'd be lost.

Long live Chordie!

Have a look at fretplay.com. I'm sure it's there somewhere. I'd post a direct link but have become a bit paranoid about getting chordie into trouble via the forum.

All the best, and welcome to the chordie forum.

Try justinguitar.com. Justin has loads of lessons on everything and a good few videos.

It's an interesting holiday this one. I know there are lots of pagan traditions that go with it. All very interesting in a Morris Dancing kinda way. This side of the Rio Tweed it is traditionally a Trade Union holiday. Again, all very interesting, with lots of Trade Union events organised.

Too bad it's hissing down!

Typical May bank holiday weather here. Tipping it down all day. As a consequence we have had a relaxing, family day at home. Played some guitar, watched some TV, messed about on internet, played some guitar. Just about to start on dinner myself.

Best wishes to you all, and your loved ones.

Don't worry about your fingers loosening (?) off. It'll happen and you won't even know it. There are a few of us on the forum who have come back to playing after a long lay-off. I think it's been much more enjoyable this time around. Maybe that's down to Chordie and just the sheer enjoyment of playing for fun. Enjoy it, your grandson will now see you as a guitar hero. Brilliant.

Should this not be in "My Local Band"?

I keep forgetting I'm a member of that group. It could be interesting too.

I have many of my songbook entries in a binder but I have printed them off individually. May be upyerkilt can shed more light on this though.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

Why is there in a lot of buildings, like hotels NO 13th FLOOR? Are the US citizens THAT superstitious?

.

There are many many streets in the UK where the houses are numbered - odds one side, evens the other. But on the odd side the numbers go ..... 7, 9, 11, 15, 17. No number 13. Very very common.

I guess home-buyers are more superstitious than you'd think. Us humans are a strange bunch.

Hi Tine,

You call her your angel and , my God, that's true. But does she know she has an angel in her mother. What you have gone through is awful and, I think, would have destroyed many people. To be able to see the positive in the aftermath of this is truly inspiring. God bless you, Tine, and your family. I have a feeling that there are many hundreds of people, right at this moment, wishing it was possible to do some sort of virtual group hug.

I don't know what else to say

Over the coming months, as you practice and get yourself nice and chilled out, take a special trip every now and then to have a browse through some shiny new guitars. Have a fiddle around with them in whatever shop you find yourself. You'll find one you love and can afford. Tell the staff you want it set up properly, with a nice low action for ease of playing. Once you have a guitar you cannot wait to get your hands on you'll see a great improvement in your playing.

Could be a noisey night, my brother plays the bagpipes lol

I played with a bagpiper once. Everything he played was in the key of A. He was great. I like playing in A.

Yeah. The problem with pipers is that the A that they play (the constant droning back note) is continually being tweeked up a bit by the Pipe Majors (band leaders) so the A is no longer an A but getting nearer a Bb all the time. These guys are never happy. I think they do it just so they can make other musicians look bad. Evil pipers!

Toney, the seat belt thing was a big issue over here a while ago. There was a spate of bus crashes in which kids were killed or seriously injured. As a result all busses carrying kids must have seat belts fitted. As usual it takes a tragedy to get something done.

What a fantastic story. I have to say if my brother set me up like that my first reaction would be to clobber him. You showed a lot of courage to do it. But I'm guessing that since you did do it that it was something you really wanted to anyway. Well done. And why wait for your brother to visit? Get up there solo. Sounds like you could handle it no problem.
